Love Smeck.
A friend of mine always used to call him the Eddie Van Halen of the '20s. Judging by the recommended/related videos on YouTube, he wasn't alone in that thinking.

Roy Smeck "multi-track"1-man quartet (go to 3:28 in the video) The earliest "over-dubbing" I've seen--it's clearly earlier than Les Paul.
