I remember coming home from school for lunch the day Len Bias died. I fixed myself something to eat, turned on the TV, and heard the news.
Bias would have been 50 today. Here’s Dave Zirin.

Even though we know the whole story now, the initial report that cocaine killed him the first time he tried it terrified me. As a result I've never tried drugs. Amazing the things that stick with you.
Man, I was in 6th grade when Bias died and knew it was a messed up situation. I learned from this article that Bias' High School was a few miles from my very first elementary school teaching job. I had kids in my class with experiences I couldn't have in my worst nightmares. sigh...
It stands out to me as a rattling moment for sure.
Hard to image he'd have been 50. I remember watching him, once in person, and Maryland games (many, many times on TV). He would have been an amazing NBA talent. So sad, such a waste. Never forget the OT win over North Carolina (then ranked #1)
