Meh on Roberts. He's older and brittle these days, but did get to see his junior college year at South Carolina. Set the SEC record for stolen bases in a year. The year before he was at North Carolina (IIRC) and set the ACC record for stolen bases in a year. Clearly the best player in the game back then.
One good thing about the South, College baseball games start in February.
The brass doesn't believe it has anyone within the organization who can outperform a 35 y.o. 2B who's put up this line over the last three years: .231/.289/.344/.633/71.
The main thing I remember about Roberts is that he had his elbow turned inside out when he put his arm between Bubba Crosby and first base. (Poor Bubba felt terrible. Roberts was a friend of his; they were roommates when they played on a college all-star team together.)
Roberts had been having a career year. Showed power he never showed before or since. Turns out, he was also 'roiding, which may be related.
He's also missed a ton of time with a concussion (which he gave himself, by bopping himself on the helmet with his bat). And he's geriatric for a second baseman.
On the bright side, it's a cheap one-year deal. This is a stopgap, perhaps even just an insurance deal.
[1] Just missing the how it happened, with a nod to Buster Olney, and why. Could they have been too concerned about the construction and financing of the new ballpark, which I cannot afford to visit?
Rany's been waiting years to write this

1) Zzzzz.
I've changed my mind. Is it too late to make Cano an 11 year offer?

2) he'll be appearing on the Q train between 4 and 6 this Friday screaming about Socialism. Get your tickets now.
why didn't they just sign Mark Reynolds, instead? i'd rather have him...
Brian Roberts.
So...

so I've been watching Tanaka highlights, and all I can say is...that don't look like no 25 year old I've ever seen
[6] Don't be ridiculous.
Roberts is 36.
[8] You're always the voice of reason.
Brian Roberts. Sigh..
[7] He's great. But I worry about the workload.
[1] Great read, IMHO. There's simply no reason we should not have Cano at 2B.

And if these Two Things don't work out, we can always go the other way:

[12] David Wright did it last year. My concern for Roberts is that he claims to have hit himself in the head a million times. Not a fit, fit.
And low hud ain't so positive either.
