Yanks open the season in Houston against the Astros tonight.
Whadda ya know, it’s the 12th Opening Day we’ve covered here at the Banter.
Jacoby Ellsbury CF
Derek Jeter SS
Carlos Beltran RF
Brian McCann C
Mark Teixeira 1B
Alfonso Soriano DH
Brett Gardner LF
Brian Roberts 2B
Kelly Johnson 3B
LHP CC Sabathia
Never mind the cobwebs:
Let’s Go Yank-ees!
I've been here for all dozen Banter Opening Days!
GO JETER!!! GO YANKS!!!
Yay!
R.I.P. Nuney
Happy Baseball everyone!
a buddy of mine bought me the mlb package for this season, so i'll be able to watch some yanks games - via yes feed - on my laptop or iphone. of course, i won't be around very much and it looks like i'm gonna miss some, most, or all of tonight's game. dammit!
[5] Priorities!
Yankees-Dodgers WS. You heard it here first.
Ah, my favorite day of the year
Woman setting up the mic is kinda hot in a Cobie Smulders kinda way.
Evening all!
Hm.
When am I going to get used to Jacoby Ellsbury leading off?
Anyone else find that to be a kinda lame opening day ceremony?
Okay, seeing the team line up got me excited. This is gonna be a fun season cause I just compare it to last year--gotta figure it'll be better, and despite losing I didn't find last season unenjoyable or without its share of good memories.
Anyhow, let's go Yanks! Glad to have the jernt open for you guys and the Yanks for another season.
Awesome start, 2 minutes of baseball related content, 10 minutes of commercials.
Yeah, that would be a rotten beginning to the end ...
[13] I actually disliked the 2012 season alot more than 2012.
Oh Jesus fuggin Christ. Hope he's OK. Jeez, his arm could be broke and he'd still go down to first.
[16] That should be "than 2013"
[16] With me it's vice versa.
Ohhhh. [16] [18] [19] Never mind.
Go Yankees! C'mon, Big Fella!
Well, that's not auspicious.
[20] I think I've posted here long enough that everyone knows one of my biggest pet peeves in baseball is pointless bullpen machinations. The 2012 bullpen with two LOOGYs and two ROOGYs was pretty close to my low point of Yankee fandom. I HATED that.
I still don't understand the point of that hill
[23] Were there more plays in 2012? I know you love plays.
[24] It makes the field more like a pinball machine, I think.
We played the infield in in the first inning against Scott Feldman and the Astros?
[27] First play of the season!
Bleh.
Yankees really lighting it up in the field
In fact, so far, NOTHING this inning has been auspicious.
Meh.
::facepalm::
Nice throw, Teix!
I don't think the Yankees have cleanly fielded one play yet.
::facepalm::
::facepalm::
Sigh.
How much longer does CC's deal run?
Hm.
We needed more spring training.
Can't anybody here play this game?
[37] Seems the Astros' have the hang of it ...
Could CC possibly have deteriorated since last season (gulp!)?
The Astros really are just a boulevard of broken dreams for busted prospects, huh?
[38] Meh. They hit a couple grounders that the Yankees made asinine decisions on.
[39] I know looks is deceivin', but he looks right now like I could hit him.
Hey, Team! Checking in den the bar, happy Opening Day! That bottom of the first was fun, huh?
The Astros have four runs on three hits, no BB, no HBP, no ROE. That must be fairly unusual. (Especially in the first inning.)
[43] No!
But, Happy Opening Day to you too!
Wow, Sori looks exactly the same as he did in the old days, only all bulked up.
(And why was the infield drawn in in the first inning?)
[47] Because, plays.
We don't love the Hoes...
WTF!?!?!
This isn't going well.
I never liked this stupid game anyway. What time do the Cosmos play?
NJ Generals?
Silver Bullets?
CC always starts out slow, blah, blah, blah, wait till June, blah, blah, blah.
In my tardiness, what happened? I heard Jeter hit in the hand, is he ok? Four runs...ugh now five. CC will be out of his mind after this start. Is that shiney new season feeling gone.
Anyone have a diagnosis? Velocity?
Seriously? Gritner isn't lighting it up out there either, is he?
[54] CC's not pitching well, but the Yankees' fielding has been awful and Joe had the infield in in the first inning for no good reason. They're pitching poorly, fielding poorly, hitting poorly and managing poorly.
On the other hand, its opening day. It can be overlooked
We can appreciate a Grossman and a Feldman in the same lineup.
Towarda Leaning Jeter!
Beltran looks *awful* in the field.
[58] Yes! Very true. Emet.
Sound effect for Beltran trying to pick up that ball:
Unh
Meh
Oof
Dammit
C'mere
Ugh
Don't worry, CC. You did have those 17 scoreless innings to end Spring Training. sigh....
Christ on a cracker, somebody needs to show CC the secret of the "window to weight gain" ... thin CC sucks eggs.
I can't really get too upset about opening day. Just get a hit.
I think CC can go six.
(And give up 18 runs and throw 150 pitches, I guess.)
Can someone tell me the specs on instantreplay? (You know, to pass the time?)
Nice to see George and Barbara out and about, but the President really doesn't look good. I suppose he is 90 and there's only so good you're gonna look...
Man, Papa Bush is ancient!
Opening Day, フレーー!
What's happening Banter?
.
.
.
Oh, 6-0 'Stros..Is CC really done done??
Brian Roberts then Kelly Johnson. Feel the excitement!
[67] Don't know what that means. You want to know how to find the video highlights online?
Oh Jesus Christ its Scott Feldman. Someone get a hit
Houston area Gallery Furniture King is guesting on the Astros radio feed. His 'real' Texan accent is fascinating. If 'Stros win more than 63 games, free furniture for regular customers!
I mean, what are the rules for appealing umpires' calls?
Much better
That was a nice pitch.
3 up 3 down for CC. Funny
And Matt, I must say, this Zen thing you have going on is most amusing. How long can you keep this up?
[74]] Ah!
The manager just tells the crew chief. Is that what you're asking?
Teams have a clubhouse guy watching video who can tell the manager whether it's a good idea to challenge.
(78) Phil Jackson's influence already being felt in the NY sports scene?
THAT was a strike?
can someone air lift CC a goddamn cheeseburger, please?
But how many challenges do you get? And is there a penalty for being wrong?
Yay, a hit!
[83] There is no penalty for being wrong except that you don't get another. If right, you get another.
(68) Jimmy Carter is traveling the world in support of women's basic rights to live, George and Barbara go to baseball games.
Mo's gone. :(
[86] Everyone does what they're good at. That's the way it should be. From each according to his ability, as Bush used to say. (I think. Or Karl Marx, I always get those two mixed up.)
[78] Unless there's something just unforgivable (the first inning intentional walk from a few years ago, for example)I let a lot go on opening day
Ah, ok, thanks. That sounds reasonable.
Wait, I forgot, no: you get one challenge in the first six innings, then two in the seventh through ninth. Yeah, they came up with that one just recently.
I wish I had a brat and some fries. Damn.
I'll get a beer, that will have to do.
Did I show you guys my purty new Yankee Subway sign?
https://twitter.com/Mattpat11/status/451099939729571840/photo/1
[93] Very cool. You mounted it on a brick wall? :-)
[94] Brick wall is part of the picture. :)
The Pirates challenged a pick-off in extra innings yesterday, and won. I mean, they won the challenge, then they won the game 1-0.
Hey, if you look at the GameDay page for the game, it now has a little marker saying how many challenges the team has. On the little scoreboard.
Evening folks, what the hell is going on?
Nuney DFA'd? That might be a bigger error than any he's made.
I thought all outs counted the same, regardless of inning.
(Same rule applies for runs, so far as I know.)
[99] He can't play any position in the field and isn't a good enough hitter to make up for it
[93] Mattpat11, that's an awesome sign but I challenge it with my new Donnie Baseball jersey! https://twitter.com/MrOKJazzTOKYO/status/451157471004880896/photo/1
[102] But besides that, pretty good! Except that he tends to throw the ball away a lot. Still.
[103] I picked up one of those when I went to see the Dodgers at the Stadium last year. :)
[105] I had to explain to a Dodger fan friend here how much Mattingly is revered by guys our (my?) age. They just see him as a rather tactically-challenged manager.. :(
[106] I'm 27. I'd say I'm at the very tail end of the window which probably extends to guys about 35.
how did this game get away?
Mattingly was our DiMaggio.
[107] Extend that to about 45 I think. (Me just turned 40..sigh...)
I'm enjoying this game though, always great to see world clas pitchers like Scott Feldman at the top of their game. Just got to tip yer hat to the Greatness.
[107] Its kinda funny. In hindsight, the Mattingly I saw play (1993-1995) was a shell of the awesome player he was, but he was still my hero growing up an was the nicest guy on earth when I met him in 1995 and that will always mean alot to me.
Andy!!!
Way to rebound, CC.
I am on a flight to Houston, if I get there in time I'll call the score truck for a late delivery.
Remember when Sori fouled out bunting strike three in the World Series?
Ouch.
That's our best way of getting on base so far, though.
ouch!
#14 looks like Aaron Boone, but from the left side.
So I'm heading out to the desert in August (I know). Gonna see the Rockies and DBacks.
Oh, jeez. What an opportunity for Kelly Johnson. Got an eminently hittable pitch, too.
[119] Rockies-D'backs? The Bible Thumpers vs The Gritty Grinders. Enjoy that one!
[120] At least he's clean and playing the right way. That means a lot to me. (Note: means nothing to me.)
[119] Been there in August. It's hell.
But if you sit still and drink lots and lots of water, it's not really uncomfortable.
[121] Yeah. I miss Bob Brenley bobblehead night by one game too.
Should be a lot of fun though.
Did they cut to commercial mid at bat?
I went to the Oakland Coliseum and AT&T Park in 2012 and Wrigley and The Cell last year, so I'm looking forward to seeing Chase Field this year.
The only one I didn't like was Wrigley, btw.
Hm.
Dellin Betances.
So at least one pinstriped dude is having a good day.
Oh, joy!
"Managing" ... with a 6 run lead!
Qualls was part of that two ROOGY bullshit from two years ago.
Remember when Derek took that backwards K from that Donnelly fuck on California? That hurt.
(It was under the hands.)
YAY!
Hey!
Okay. Now rally time.
FINALLY!
My 1st 2014 Yankees' season smile.
A hit for the Captain!
And that's the inside out Derek Jeter special.
Gameday is funny on opening day.
"Chad Qualls is trying to tie up Derek Jeter with fastballs inside; Jeter is hitting .000 on pitches in that location compared to .000 overall."
Hey, hey ... now, now ...
Melky's gone, but he's not forgotten ...
A run!
Yo ho!
With Mo gone Jeter (and I guess to some degree Sabathia) is the only guy left that it actually makes me sad to see fail. Everyone else makes me mad. If absolutely nothing else I'm living and dying with Jeter this year
HA!
The floodgates.
Right?
Ahahahahahahahaha!
I'll take it!
Oh, So ...
Nope, no floodgates.
[145] Look at the bright side, they've now scored DOUBLE the amount of runs this season of America's Working Class Hero Champion Red Sox..so they got THAT going for them.
Man, a hit from Sori would have made it a game, too.
I'm going to go out on a limb and predict we won't see Mo tonight.
[149] :-(
3 Mules for Sister Sara ... 3 ks for Vidal Nuno???
I like our bullpen so far, though. Five strikeouts and a grounder in two innings. (And a single.)
[152] Yeah, bully's looked ... well ... BULLY!
Hey hey hey! It's Matt Albers!
[153] Thank you, cult of Teddy Roosevelt.
Hey, hey, hey! It's ... Faaaaaaaaaaaaaat Alpers!
[154] Dammit! Stop that now.
Gritner the only holdover from last years starting lineup? Wow.
[118] You are spot on, he does!
Oh, sure, now. Not when the bases were loaded.
Anyway, welcome aboard, Kelly.
Oh well
Yankees lost their first game in 1998 too. Just saying.
night all.
Well, that's a wrap.
Get 'em tomorrow, no doubt.
I believe Mr. Albers has a figure that is most accurately described as ... Reuschel-esque
Tomorrow will be better; we get to say hello to Hiro. Goodnight.
[123] Chase Field will probably have the roof closed and the air-conditioning on.
I went to a couple of WBC games last spring at Chase Field, and everyone was all excited because the roof was open. You just don't see that during the regular baseball season.
First game jitters? I don't think so!
