Woo hoo! Oh, great day game and I can't play hooky.

2 Sliced Bread   ~  Apr 7, 2014 11:30 am

Here's hoping a little homecooking can get Soriano going.

3 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 7, 2014 11:47 am

The immortal Steve Pearce.

4 Alex Belth   ~  Apr 7, 2014 11:57 am

2) So-Ri-An-No!

5 thelarmis   ~  Apr 7, 2014 12:10 pm

really cool. i'm glad i got to watch the core four opening day pitch via the mlb package!

6 Sliced Bread   ~  Apr 7, 2014 12:11 pm

nice little Caw Faw moment there:
Pettitte tossing to Jorge
Mo tossing to Jeets.

7 thelarmis   ~  Apr 7, 2014 12:21 pm

[6] yeah, i agree. i thought Andy and Mo would switch sides so they'd be facing each other. i guess that could be distracting, but rather cool, nonetheless...

8 thelarmis   ~  Apr 7, 2014 12:36 pm

awesome. thanks, nellie!

Happy Home Opening Day everyone!

10 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 7, 2014 12:56 pm

I think I like this Port Jarvis guy.

I hope things stay that way ...

11 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 7, 2014 12:57 pm

Billy Crystal is actually amusing me today ...

12 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 7, 2014 12:59 pm

Well, poo.

13 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 7, 2014 1:15 pm

Does seem like umps have been calling a lot more high strikes so far this year.

Interesting.

14 MSM35   ~  Apr 7, 2014 1:15 pm

It would not be an opening day without DJ hitting into a double play. Someone tell Joe to run guys ahead of him.

15 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 7, 2014 1:20 pm

Ken, Coney and Kay are a pretty good crew.

16 Sliced Bread   ~  Apr 7, 2014 1:21 pm

nice Sori.

17 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 7, 2014 1:21 pm

Oh, Fonzie.

That at bat was just so ... you.

18 thelarmis   ~  Apr 7, 2014 1:23 pm

[15] i was thinkin' the same thing.

19 Alex Belth   ~  Apr 7, 2014 1:23 pm

The ball just sounded good off Sori's bat.

20 Sliced Bread   ~  Apr 7, 2014 1:24 pm

14) I had a similar thought, thinking 2b was Gardner's for the taking, but as the play turned out (Jeter grounding to pitcher) wouldn't the throw have come home, or the runner held at third?

Perplexing though that the YES guys keep saying how easy it is to steal off this guy, and Gardner, Ellsbury, and Soriano have not tested him yet.

21 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 7, 2014 1:28 pm

This game is irritating me.

22 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 7, 2014 1:29 pm

PORT JARVIS!!!

23 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 7, 2014 1:30 pm

I'll take that.

24 Sliced Bread   ~  Apr 7, 2014 1:30 pm

Sol-man!

25 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 7, 2014 1:31 pm

I love clicking on gameday to see that blue dot (runs) symbol. The Kid!

26 Alex Belth   ~  Apr 7, 2014 1:35 pm

Drat.

27 Alex Belth   ~  Apr 7, 2014 1:35 pm

22) That's Port H'her-vis! LOL

28 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 7, 2014 1:38 pm

The old Bartolo Colon fastball.

29 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 7, 2014 1:43 pm

WOO-HOO!

30 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Apr 7, 2014 1:46 pm

Thanks, John, had me excited that there was a homer there from the Capt.

31 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Apr 7, 2014 1:47 pm

(foreced to listen to the radiocast because there is no TV)

32 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 7, 2014 1:47 pm

Oh boy. I thought he was out in regular speed. Definitely safe on replay

33 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 7, 2014 1:48 pm

[30] Kay was halfway through the homerun call.

34 thelarmis   ~  Apr 7, 2014 1:48 pm

how did that NOT go out?!?!

35 Alex Belth   ~  Apr 7, 2014 1:48 pm

Wow. That is the fime I have EVER seen Jeter Cadillac it out of the box.

36 thelarmis   ~  Apr 7, 2014 1:49 pm

yeah!!!

37 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 7, 2014 1:50 pm

He was safe

38 rbj   ~  Apr 7, 2014 1:51 pm

Maybe this Port Jervis kid can Wally Pip A-rod.

39 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 7, 2014 1:52 pm

[38] The most expensive injection he ever took?

40 Sliced Bread   ~  Apr 7, 2014 1:53 pm

35) He more like Chevy Cobalted it (you know, with the faulty ignition switch?)
He looked stunned that he hit a ball that almost went out. Can't blame him for getting caught up in that moment. He's lucky he made it safely to 2b though.

41 Alex Belth   ~  Apr 7, 2014 1:58 pm

40) Well, someone's gotta act like Cano.

42 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Apr 7, 2014 1:58 pm

38 - In the word of the Beach Boys, "wouldn't it be nice?"

43 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 7, 2014 2:11 pm

There are few pitchers I enjoy watching more than Hiroki Kuroda

44 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Apr 7, 2014 2:14 pm

rbj: I know you came up with Port Jervis kid, but I'm thinking maybe we should change the name to Pip Jervis.

45 Sliced Bread   ~  Apr 7, 2014 2:15 pm

41) now if someone could just hit like Cano...

In Jeter's defense, it was less "lookit what I can do" showboating, and more "holy crap did I hit one out?"

46 rbj   ~  Apr 7, 2014 2:16 pm

[44] I like it. Pip Jervis.

47 Sliced Bread   ~  Apr 7, 2014 2:34 pm

uh oh. bullpen time.

48 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 7, 2014 2:38 pm

Aw hell not Phelps

49 Sliced Bread   ~  Apr 7, 2014 2:39 pm

Phelps.

50 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 7, 2014 2:40 pm

Uh, keep it in the Park, Dave.

51 Sliced Bread   ~  Apr 7, 2014 2:44 pm

That was good for Phelps' confidence, and bad for the 45-thousand pairs of underwear in attendance.

52 Sliced Bread   ~  Apr 7, 2014 2:57 pm

surprising to see a lot of empty seats around the Stadium. The indoor bars and luxury boxes are probably packed.

53 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 7, 2014 3:04 pm

Yay!

54 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 7, 2014 3:05 pm

Strike 3. Ah, the dulcet tones of John and Suzyn.

55 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 7, 2014 3:12 pm

Man, really thought Port Jarvis got ALL of that one ... and that ALL was enough to put that ball deep in the bleachers.

Damn.

56 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Apr 7, 2014 3:20 pm

Good win. Glad they could win one for Jetes.

57 rbj   ~  Apr 7, 2014 3:27 pm

Got home in time to see Kelly get his first big league save.

58 rbj   ~  Apr 7, 2014 3:40 pm

Oh shit, via Lohud:
"Dave Robertson is heading to the disabled list with a Grade 1 groin strain. Hurt himself last night, felt it today and was sent for an MRI when he got to the ballpark and mentioned the problem."

59 Alex Belth   ~  Apr 7, 2014 3:52 pm

58) Oh, man.

60 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Apr 7, 2014 4:15 pm

58) Oy.

61 RIYank   ~  Apr 7, 2014 4:38 pm

Oh, man, that is some bad news. Groin strain could be two months, right? Pitchers are so freaking delicate.

And WHY PHELPS???? I mean, it worked out just fine, but my underpants are definitely among [51] the 45,000.
Why put the single worst pitcher on the staff into the game in the highest-leverage situation of the year? Why?

Anyway, happy about the win.
