Well, that sucked. The Yanks won a laughter on Friday night but then Dellin Betances and Aroldis Chapman blew Saturday’s game (spoiling a nice debut for Clint Frazier) followed by yesterday’s beat down. No, that wasn’t how it was supposed to go at all.
Right now, the Astros are the Man. And the Yanks ain’t.
Our boys are back home where it is Hotter than July—wait, it is July. Those damn Jays.
Nice DP
Yay, Headley. HBP RBI
Rats wanted more than two
Tanaka looks good again. I continue to fear regression though.
Nice, Tanaka
Please go away Chris Carter, and take Ref with you.
[6] agreed
Pitcher duel
Down goes Frazier!
I missed yesterday's game..for the better it seems.
What's happening this evening?
Please, binder, let Tanaka throw more than 95 pitches.
[10] Good Tanaka. Phew, he almost gave up a home run there. Two first inning runs have held up so far
It hit his foot, blue!
Crap
Where the fuck was that, blue?
[12] Thanks! Tuning in on the radio now.
3 games back of the BoSox isn't too bad considering all the injuries..but I think the WC is more likely than the division now.
Carter gets a walk!
I can only follow on gameday. How are Frazier's ABs? The results have not been there, but he seems to work a fair number of pitches. How does he look?
That was a ball to the BJs, blue! F.U.
[18] he's looked like a rookie at times, fooled on pitches, but he's also had some well struck balls.
Yet another blown call by this ump.
Nice!
Strike 'em out, throw 'em out DP!
Judge & the Sheriff!
Bases loaded, no outs . . . and Headley is up. Sigh
[25] I feel like I've watched Headley and Carter NOT bring home the base runners about 500 times this season
A double! Two rbis!
Yes! Technically headley has not made an out tonight...
That's weird
But I'll take it
That was very weird indeed rbj! But awesome!
Carter!
Doing absolutely nothing good.
Do the Yankees have a 1b in Scranton? I don't mean a stud prospect or anything. I mean literally, do they play games with a 1b, or do they only field 8 players? If in fact they have a AAA 1b, how bad must he be for the Yankees to stick with Carter at this point?
I'd rather give up a double than a Judge concussion
That wall play reminds me of bobby abreu who totally feared the wall.
Monkey I believe it's either Ji-Man Choi or a sack of potatos
One down
[33] there is Choi. He must not be great in the field. Seems like he DHd a lot.
[33][36] Can they get by with Holliday at 1B when he comes back?
[39] I think they should put headley at first and call up andujar.
[39] apparently the Yankees are so wary of holiday's health the he is virtually an emergency only 1b. Which means when he comes back Frazier will go down and the wonder duo of carter and ref will remain.
Jeebus
[40] yes.
Or call up Andujar and Choi and...gasp...drop one fielder (Ref or Carter?) and one of the useless pitchers. Carter as BU1b/swing for the fences ph is fine with me.
Argh. Cmon chapman. We need you right.
Two down, finally
Yes! Two
[43] yeah it doesn't require a lot of creativity but cashman is super reluctant.
Three down! Phew. Night all
Yes! Phew. Maybe that was just enough for dellin and chapman to build on.
Yay, CC's back
Lots of fly balls. Frazier played that well.
Fucking bullshit run.
Aw crud
Damn it.
CC's getting squeezed
Blegh
He is a bit but he's also not throwing a lot of strikes.
Fuck
That was quick at least.
Judge!
Paul called that instantly. Wow!
118 exit velo. Over 450 feet.
Yikes. Cessa could have beeen nailed by the bat and ball.
[62] And it was a line drive. Unreal.
Modammit!
Jeez, Carter
Carter is amazing
Every fuckimg high school first baseman in the country catches that. Boooooooooooooooooooo!
Shades of Winfield
Well that's good but it delays carters trip to the Mendoza line.
It was low, blue
how can you hit without knowing what will or won't be called a strike?
Horse shit.
This game is a dud.
Ooh at least wade gets an at bat.
Yuck.
Enjoy the rest of your fourth, everyone.
Oh well. Enjoy the holiday all!
OMG YES! Carter DFAd. Again. Choi coming up.
[78] I missed today. Seems odd to release him so close before the all star break. What was the straw that broke the camel's back, I wonder.
[79] his inability to hit aside, he failed to catch a Didi throw to first. It was low but hit the pocket of carters glove and rolled away.
[80] thing is, he was being asked to do what he really can't: play full time at 1b. As a bench player/backup/sometimes DH he would be fine. But he's been forced into full time service by lots of indies, yes, but also by the Yankees'cheonically short bench. I swear, every year yeh team starts with 7 relievers, then hits an injury or doubleheader or some such, cals up an 8th reliever, and never goes back. Anyway, I'd rather watch choi try and probably fail for several weeks than more of the same with Carter.
[81] Wait up. He was an everyday player for the entire season last year in Milwaukee (155 games at first base. Why shouldn't we expect him to be able to play first?
I agree he sucks, but he was not being asked to do something he was unfamiliar with.
Personally, I am looking forward to seeing what the Ji-Man has to offer. Keep the debuts coming.
[82] i guess im going off what RAB said about him: he's always been bad defensively, and he's always had poor BA and strikes out a lot, but at least used to hit fir more power. you take that if he mashes HRs. Plus, he was brought in precisely to be a backup, for Bird. So the Yankees at least initially did not envision him as more than part time.
How about the offense and pitching both show up today? Oh, and defense too.
Er, I guess not
Boo
Judgement!
Choi goes yard!
Didi delivers Gregoriusly!
damn
Jeex, Dellin
Gah.
MRI for Betances.
Good job, Warren.
Need a baserunner
Thanks, Brett
nerts
So, I watched on tape delay. Choi had 3 quality at bats. His 4th at bat is a blur of course.
Sigh. Another winnable game fumbled by the bullpen.
As Alec Baldwin said in Glengarry Glen Ross
"If you can't play in the man's game. You can't close them. Go home and tell your wife your troubles."
A bit frustrating vacationing in northern Jersey. No Yes, no MLB package because I'm too close to NYC. Radio only.
How about a win tonight
Yes!
Oops. Didi gets to third
Whoops.
Wow, third error already by the Brewers. Maybe they've been sampling their product.
Brett too
Damn!
Well, that didn't take long.
I tune in and the 1st batter hits a 2 run homer to put the Yankees down 2-1.
My bad ...
Number 4!
La Choi!
Choi!!!!
That's not an out
#5!
Radar shows a brief storm
Hopefully it's as brief as it is a storm ...
And now the tarp!
Btw apparently there was a Bill Madden column today in which an "unnamed" Yankee executive, coff Randy Levine coff, questioned Bird over the ankle. I guess this it's totally not Randy Levine thinks Bird doesn't want to play and would rather make far less money in a factory job.
If I saw Randy Levine hit by a bus, my first response would be to run over ... to the bus, to ask if it was ok.
Does he *ever* open his mouth and not sound like a complete ass?
Heh cult. And then ask the driver if he can recreate what just happened
Nice job, Hedley ...
Boo, Headley. Also, boo Headley
First spin of the Bullpen Wheel of Death!
That'll do, Tylers!
All Rise!
The Judge gavels a new Yankees rookie record
Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio?
[122] Bullpen R☠☠lette?
So how's Clippard going to fuck this up?
I've been entertaining my sister and her kids from Texas. Thank Mo for Judge. Holy ....
[127] First Spin = Click?
Ruh roh
Bugger.
Does anyone have any hope right here?
That's unfortunate.
This team makes me want to kick puppies ...
Girardi seems to have gotten so much jumpier with his starters. When he first became manager, he used to give the starters a much longer leash (as I recall)--at least longer than Joe Torre did at the end of his tenure. I think he totally fell in love with his über-bullpen last year (which is really just the Yankees, among others, trying to copy the Royals blue print from a few years back).
I know that he's trying to be more careful with some starters: Tanaka because of his injuries, Sabathia is no longer a workhorse, etc. But he yanked Montgomery after only 74 pitches, which itself would not be a problem if he could actually trust any of his relievers. Maybe it's time to try a different tact and try to push the starters a little more.
I was joking, jeez, didn't think Joe would take it as a suggestion. Modammit
I should clarify ... it's mostly the pitching.
A series of unfortunate events.
Rain delay, monkey. Joe actually did run Monty back out.
[140] I guess I don't understand why, if he was able to go back out after the rain delay, he was not fit to throw a few more pitches. Regardless, there is no doubt in my mind that Girardi has become much quicker hook...which is fine if the bullpen is not a dumpster fire.
I don't think I can remember a run of games where the Yankees bullpen was so universally just so fucking awful.
As in, *everyone's* been to blame.
Long top of the fourth plus the rain delay. Probably 50 minutes of inaction. I guess it was too long
[143] Leaving aside the rain delay...here are the average pitches per start for the starters this season (I did a little BB reference homework):
Montgomery: 92
Sabathia: 87
Tanaka: 91
Pineda: 91
Severino: 99
That's tempting fate unless you have three or four studs in the bullpen lined up for the 6 through 9th. Which they don't have.
[144] Ah, this is fun...haven't played around like this with numbers in a while.
[144] Don't dispute that. It's an overworked pen. I'm tapping out, this team is frustrating me
This team's pitching staff needs an enema ... because they're completely full of shit.
Where's Tanyon Sturze when you need him?
Fucking pathetic.
Kyle Farnsworth! I've been trying for 15 minutes to remember his name! I am trying to keep my mind off this inning., What. The. Fuck!
Atta boy, Tyler!
Called it off the bat.
Fuck you Clippard.
Fuck you Girardi.
Or this (talking to no one in particular): the average pitches per start by the three longest tenured starters:
Pineda 2017: 91
Pineda 2016: 94
Pineda 2015: 94
Pineda 2014: 87
Pineda 2011: 96 (injured that year)
Tanaka 2017: 91
Tanaka 2016: 95
Tanaka 2015: 95
Tanaka 2014: 100
Sabathia 2017: 87
Sabathia 2016: 97
Sabathia 2015: 93
Sabathia 2014: 100 (injured that year)
Sabathia 2013: 104
As late as last year Girardi was giving Sabathia a much longer rope (and Sabathia was pretty good last year). Meanwhile Tanaka and Pineda are both in the prime of their careers, and Pineda is far removed from major injury. This is when they should be giving more innings, yet Girardi is pulling them quicker.
I really do think he fell in love with his BP last year, and fell in love with the formula. But whatever, I actually don't get upset about baseball much any more. The season has turned into the check in when Jude or Sanchez or Frazier bat, and that's ok.
Years of a good bullpen with bullocks offense and finally an exciting offense and the bullpen fucking sucks.
Alright.
Fuck this.
I'm done for tonight.
Glad I slept in. Not. Tuned in just in time for the Grand Salami.
Yech. Blech. Heck, I'm out again.
[153] Interesting stuff. Thanks Monkey!
I wasn't pissed that Clippard was in, but I was annoyed that Girardi left him in after the 4 pitch walk and the well hit ball to the warning track. He was clearly struggling and it was clearly tempting fate. But i'm with Monkey, being able to watch Judge, Sanchez, Frazier, etc... bat is fun and enjoyable. Also, we are still in playoff position. So the ship is rightable. And if we're going to have a major slump now is a fine time to have it. But it's going to be hard to watch this team in August and September if they don't turn it around soon.
flipped around the dial, tuned in to see the Clippard GS. I just knew it.
Fuck you, umps.
Of course.
2nd day running, I tune in late and the 1st Brewer batter I see goes deep.
Sigh.
Even I'm accursed in this collapse ...
But it's going to be hard to watch this team in August and September if they don't turn it around soon.
Only if they fail to blow up the shit show and cut or trade every useless veteran they can.
I'm specifically looking at you, Clippard and Headley ...
Oh, great, a crafty lefty ... I can already imagine the frustration.
Judge is the only reason to tune in right now.
Love the way this pitcher works.
Get it, throw it.
I have a bad feeling about this game ...
GODDAMN FUCKING PATHETIC.
CUT. HEDLEY. NOW.
Unfortunately Andujar has been struggling since we jerked him around. You know demoting him immediately after he had a huge game and then promoting him again without playing him and demoting him again all within 72 hours.
Alright, fine ... just cut Clippard and I'll go grumble in the corner.
Pathetic at bat from Sanchez.
Yay, a hit.
Well, at least we won't be no hit today.
Pathetic offense
Sanchez has been awful today.
Sweet, another terrible fucking at bat from Sanchez
Back to back hits?
Bring me my fainting couch, I'm feeling woozy!
Ah more sloppy defense by the Brewers.
Yes!
The Brewer's D might be as bad as the Yankees' bullpen.
Damn, thought that was out, but I'll take it.
Frazier!
Oops, I thought that was gone!
Damn. He hit it hard so not much else you can do.
Well, other than wait for a pitch you could elevate.
[183] not likely getting one from a sinker baller. You get a pitch you can hit hard you swing I think.
Oh boy ... Dancin' Betances time.
CHOI with the leather!
Bullpen time!!
Good job, Dellin
Betances, dancin'
Dellin looked good. He was throwing strikes.
One strike in that while at bat.
*whole
Eat shit, blue. First 2 strikes fine. You fucking blew the last one.
Ok two thoughts.
Does Gardner change his approach when Judge bats after him? It feels like it. Or are pitchers attacking him more aggressively knowing Judge is up next? I could be wrong but his at bats feel very different.
Earlier in this game against Suter it seemed that Judges stance was less open than it usually is. Then against Barnes he seemed more open again. Am I just imagining this? Seems like a nice subtle adjustment.
Dunno, he did walk 4 times last night ...
You too, Chapman
Yep nice inning from chapman. Gives me hope they've both righted their ships.
[195] Judge was batting 3rd last night, no?
C'mon, Chase! Don't fuck up!
[198] yeah that's kind of the question. Does gardners approach change when Judge bats second?
[198] Yeah, you're right, my bad.
K > DP. Still a chance for Frazier to bat once more.
No need, I predict Taco will ring the bell here!
Alright, kid. Find another gap.
That'll do.
Frazier!!!
He only gets XBH!!
OUT GOES FRAZIER, OUT GOES FRAZIER!!!
Frazier! Goes Downtown
Clint is now a True Yankee
what a wonderful win.
another baby bomber!
This whole "call up the kids" thing is soooo much better than the "sign Vernon Wells" thing or the "trade for Xavier Nady" thing.
Nothing beats Nady. I kid obvi. Wow! Yay Yankees!
Who says Syndrome is only a villain?
Frazier had half of our 6 hits and all 4 of our RBIs. We'd have been lost without him today.
And props to Severino, Betances, and Chapman for shutting down the Brewers after that first inning and the phantom HBP.
Yay, shit Sawx lose
A win tomorrow and we get the all star break as a sort of re-set with some positive vibes going in. We lost 17 of 23 (I guess 17 of 24 now) and we are only 3.5 games out. I'm feeling optimistic. Must have been the win.
Andujar did homer today. Hopefully he stabilizes and gets hot again. When Headley gets thrown out for the 20th time on the bases we can make the move. Or now.
gee, maybe it's time for a new game thread! BTW, nice story in the Times about Judge winning a HR derby before
I guess no new game thread. And it's looking like bad Tanaka
Yup.
Boo. Bad offense.
Good news, bad news.
Good news: No Brewer hit a homerun after I tuned in.
Bad news: 2 Brewers hit homeruns before I tuned in.
C'mon, boys, chip away!
Another phantom HBP
Yay, Chase! shutout is gone.
Woo hoo, Clint!
Downtown Frazier!
SYNDROME!
Good thinking Joe, Tanaka-san had fuck all today.
Fuuuuuuuuuugh.
Bullpen roulette just went bang, with no clicks.
Sigh
I've always liked Headley.
Aw crap, foul
I'll take that from Headley.
Boo, blue, that was a ball.
17 for Gary in the first round. High number for Stanton
Damn Stanton might catch him.
What up, RBJ? How bout Stanton? Rockets! So close.
Yes! Gary wins. That was exciting.
Damn, Stanton got 16. Gary advances
[238] Didn't think he'd make it that close
Stanton hit some ridiculous shots.
Glad to see other folks here. I am enjoying this so far. I hope Judge delivers.
Dang, Cody just snuck under the wire for extree time
[243] I always enjoy it. Baseball is meant to be fun. : )
I never even heard if this Bour dude til this week.
Damn this is not gonna be easy. I think bour wins.
The Judge is going to have a lengthy trial
[245] I rarely watch. But it's fun!
That's a one, er, three
Dang, over the Marlin
Hype him all week and then basically ignore his first 7. Well done, network.
Wow! I was so nervous for Judge but he just needs two!
Holy shit, tied up in regulation
AMAZING.
Bour is a bore rules Judge.
Wow again!
Judge really delivered. I was worried about the hype. But he always seems to deliver. And bour did really well. Sorry I lost faith. I suck. Verdict = guilty!
rbj, Ara - wasn't that awesome watching him hit homers to all fields?
For sure. It's remarkable to witness.
[259] Especially when others were merely pulling the ball.
[261] Exactly.
Gary looks tired.
Why did Sanchez go first? Seeding? Seems a bit unfair since staying energetic is so key.
Well done, Gary. Time to rest.
That cf eyesore belongs at a mini golf spot.
[264] Gary did really well. Gonna be tough to hold off Sano. But Gary proved he belonged.
Alas. Hopefully judge got enough rest. Seems like going last is a huge disadvantage.
[265] it is odd.
Bellinger did well given how obviously exhausted he is.
YES! Judge just sends balls soaring every which direction.
The Judge has a unanimous ruling
Just more wow!
So it's the most rested Sano (who smartly took his time in round 1) against the Court.
I take that back. Despite swinging less than anyone he looks exhausted.
Here comes the Judge...
I have a hard enough time keeping track of the Yankees. I didn't know about Bour or Sano until this week. Cano won this one year with that sweet ol' swing.
[276] I remember. Cano isn't really a powe hitter but he had the sweet power.
Lots of Judge fans in the stands
Nice. I thought he'd keep mashing.
I had a dog who played with a baby mouse. She couldn't understand why it ceased moving. This is like that.
Hahahahaha Judge crushed the field.
[280] nice analogy. It really is just another level.
Night all
Night rbj, ara.
The perfect interview.
When yinz get time, check out this HR Derby tool. Sanchez was the only player to hit opposite field home runs in the derby and they are both to right center. Just look at Judge's spray chart. It's awesome.
Yay, Carter has been released
This is a long lost weekend. ;>)
Apparently we have A-Rod on the field for All-Star commentary. Looking forward to that, as I'm sure the game will suck.
Nobody's watchin'?
Watching but these games are kind of boring.
Rats, probably Judges last AB
Well I guess Judge can't do everything all the time.
All rise!
I have a feeling my feed is way behind....
Dang. Now I get want yous were talkin' bout.
Betances in the 3rd? The Binder just blew up.
Well this is the game for a Dellin to get his yips out
Betances wild. c'mon man.
Phew
phew. Just wanted Dellin to survive that.
Not ideal. Harper said (something like), "he seems like a guy you just take and he'll walk ya." Ouch.
[301] it's true right now. Which is the issue. He'll get his control back and all will be fine.
Yay, a run!
Justmissedit
Molinas are not dangerous in the post season only
I'm falling asleep. Night all
G'night rbj. I'm probably not too far behind.
Is sevy the long man?
[308] Good question. I missed a bit and wondered if he's been in yet. Closer?
[309] he hasn't pitched. They said each team had a long man ready but didn't say who that was. That's all I know. I did turn off the game after sanchez' last at bat though.
Doncha know! Woo-hoo!
In case you're not watching. Cano goes yard to put the AL ahead. Sevi for the save?
Nice. Looks like Miller which makes sense.
Miller with the save. Cano MVP. Yankees still making an impact.
