It’s not been an easy time of it for Joey Gallo in New York. But every time I read something about him he seems to be thoughtful and self-aware and it makes me like him. And because I like him I’ve taken no joy in his failures as a Yankee. I don’t think his failure has anything to do with a lack of effort and while I know that doesn’t cut it when it comes to professional sports and winning championships and fan appreciation, it does count for something as a professional. And Joey Gallo has acted like a professional in New York. And that’s not nothing. Especially in the face of bombing. I wish him luck no matter where he winds up—so long as it’s not with the Red Sox.
Alex, II one hundred percent agree.
There have been boatloads of players not fit for NY (Pavano, Vazquez, Randy Johnson, Kevin Brown) that were easy to hate for their relative failings, but Gallo is of a different order entirely. Maybe we’re more sensitive to mental health these days, or whatever, but his shortcomings in the Bronx don’t seem like a character deficiency like prior dudes. He comes across as a good person and it’d be sad for a season in the BX to derail his career.
I hope they are able to move him AND I hope he hits 15 homers down the stretch and gets back to 120 OPS+ next year in a new city. Just not for Boston or Houston.
Ya.
I really feel the frustration when the camera follows him after an at bat. It's got to be psychologically devastating, and although I don't want to see him bat for the Yankees anymore, I admire him for sticking with it and not cracking up or anything.
Forty, forte.
Yay, Judge!
Uh oh.
He's safe.
Yeah not close.
Good call, blue. Oi.
Goddam it.
Defense let us down. Let Cole down.
Jesus Christ.
Well that was good hitting, but man.
I feel like this is largely self-inflicted.
Well, that was unexpected.
Sorry, but Cole keeps proving that he is neither elite nor even reliable.
Cole loves his fastball.
Don’t look now, but four hits in 14 innings for the Yanks.
[13] He's not having a great year. But he is an elite pitcher, I think.
Oy
Watching the Yankees with my girls and also trying to explain Field of Dreams.
so daughter the younger points at the tv and says “so these guys are basically dead right now?”
The athletics are the only team with a worse record than the royals and Cole managed to turn a 3-0 lead into a 5-3 deficit. Unbelievable.
[19] He had plenty of help though.
I’d offer that Chapman’s appearance here is more important than Cole’s.
[21] Interesting.
For sure it's a bright spot, anyway.
[21] Just imagine if we can see more of that from Chapman. So here’s the question — do the Yankees believe what they’ve seen these last couple outings?
My last comment at 23 is in moderation. Hmmmmmmm.....
I mean, I think they believe it... to a degree.
Or anyway, *I* believe it do a degree!
Yikes.
I feel like we have to score two here, because the rain is gonna end the game.
Nope.
Kinda felt like Cole was looking ahead to this becoming an official game and let things get away from him. Brain fart and defensive lapse equals a lost lead.
Sad sax.
So I was just about to predict a Donaldson double play. Nice of the Royals to botch it.
And I was gonna say, "It would be really good to have Carp to ph here rather than using him with two out and nobody on."
And I'm still gonna say it.
This is not a rally for the memory books, but I’ll take it. (But it looks like this fifth run is coming off the board.)
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
Why did Hicks tell Boone to challenge what he thought was a no-call???
Did he actually think he was hit??
As good as a HBP
Back on the board.
Free runs.
Or, as Michael just said, "NOW the game is scored! Again!"
IKF!
Keep the line moving!
Four runs without a ball hit more than 150 feet. Bronx Bombers, indeed.
ESPN reporting the MARINERS are getting Castillo. Kind of stunning.
Oh. My.
Well, of course he did.
Of course he did.
He did, and I wasn’t even surprised.
Pay this man, or trade him for a decade of Soto. No in between
Pay him and name him Captain. It couldn’t be more obvious.
I’m watching the Kansas City feed, and they just dropped a pretty amazing stat. Judge is the first player in major league history to have nine multi-HR games in his team’s first 101 games.
So Cole shit the bed again against a shit team. Duuuuuude....?
I just tuned in for the fireworks at the end. Seems like I made a good choice.
Hearts out to Joey Gallo. Perhaps Jeets will send him a fruit basket to somewhere far away from NYC.
Note to Cashman: We still need pitching, pitching, pitching.
Well that was unexpected.
Wait, Castillo to the Mariners?
Come on Hicksy! Let's put this away early!
Or that.
Dammit.
Don’t give those runs back
A friend stopped by last night right as they were putting the tarp down. It was 5-3. I completely forgot about the game until this a.m. Holy Cow.
That’s it.
Donaldson should hit towards the bottom of the lineup.
200 for Judge!
Ho
ly
sh
it.
I dunno. I mean.
:|
Huzzah! Amazing. I can't imagine the thrill of the fan casually snagging that Homer. Lol...
We’re going to need more runs
I’ll take those errors
Good job, Nestor.
Huh. Aroldis Chapman. Go figure.
This run manufactured by IKF.
So is it too early or too much of a jinx to start the Magic Number countdown?
After last night’s game the MN was the number between 49 and 51.
Note: only 25% of Astros fans are capable of guessing the number.
Definitely too early. Who knows what injuries might happen.
It seemed like the pitchers were figuring out Carpenter. He always works the pitcher.
7 squared
Nice win.
Look. I'm ridiculously excited about Aaron Judge, and I'm already planning on going to see all three games in Anaheim (Aug. 29,30,31) because there could be something historic happening, but I still say this: The most important thing that happened in Saturday's game was that Chapman pitched another clean inning.
I'm suddenly less concerned about the bullpen. There's Chapman (fingers crossed), but also Clarke Schmidt. And if Loaisiga gets it together? The weak spot could become a strength again.
Mariners finally beat the Ceatstros.
Red Sox sinking like a rock.
[72] Looks like they're ready to sell. I doubt JD Martinez is worth a lot of prospects, but they should get something.
Bill Russell was far and away the most significant basketball player ever. RIP.
Indeed. RIP Bill.
I wonder what Kyle's BA is with RISP.
Since as far as I know, BA can't be negative.
They really should change that non-error thing on an easy DP.
The whole can't assume a double play bullshit to avoid giving errors is horribe.
I feel like Benintendi should be leading off. Because so far, almost 100% of his offensive value is walking.
uh oh
21 starts and just 3 wins for Montgomery. How on earth can that be acceptable?
Royals want their own 8 run inning.
Right back in it.
There, see? DJ isn't a lead-off hitter. You want him *after* Judge.
I dunno, the loading-the-baaes thing didn't work out well for Montgomery. Let's not try it again.
Whew.
Amazing. So Benintendi has come to bat 14 times since joining the Yankees. Got on base half of those time. But only one hit (an infield single, you'll recall).
I’d prefer Sam Donaldson on this team.
Yay!
Rizzo!
Man it must suck to rack a 4-0 lead and feel like you're probably gonna lose.
It must suck to pitch to these guys for a whole game. I think that's why Cole looks like the happiest player on the field when the Yankees mash, because he's thinking, "Hell yeah, I never have to pitch to them."
Oof.
Well, thin margin now. I wouldn't mind if Clay gets more than 3 outs.
Dozier just gave me a Shelly Duncan flashback.
Phew
Ahhhhh.
One
Ugh.
Argh. Where is my beautiful Clay Holmes??
Oh man.
Wow.
Aw fuck
Walk him! Walk Judge! You can't pitch to Judge in this situation!
Dang.
:(
Bollocks
Hm Scott Effross.
Well, hard to spell, and I'd never heard of him, but his numbers look excellent!
I believe this is the first time an MLB team has a Trivino and a Trevino.
[106] As a battery, no less!
Montas, that's good. And I don't think we gave up too much -- although I did like JP Sears.
I like the deals. Only problem is that Gallo wasn’t included.
YES is treating the acquisitions as if the messiahs have come.
It’s a shame they weren’t able to get Castillo, but these guys will do, I suppose. I’m surprised to see Sevy hit the 60-day IL. Hopefully he comes back in September. Could be a big weapon out of the bullpen.
And every now and then they *don't* go out!
Rizzo!!
That ball was tattooed.
I disapprove of that wasteful homer.
A single would have cashed two out of the three runs, at a much lower cost.
Yeah I see why we needed Montas. I didn't think Domingo German was gonna start again.
Good lord.
Hahahahhahah!
Judge again.
I missed a few days and now all the trade action. Yanks traded for Lee Trevino, isn't he like 90 years old, and a golfer??
Gallo is still on the team??
Never heard of the Cubs guy..are these really helpful moves? Maybe I'm just out of the loop on non-Yankee or Mets players this season..
Douchelson can't buy a hit now..
[119] The Yankees will trade no player before his time.
They're all helpful! It's just a question of whether the prospects they gave up turn out to be any good. Um, well, Trivino may not be any good -- there it's a question of whether they can make a correction or two, because his 'peripherals' are promising.
wtf was that???
I mean, that was a little league rundown. Not that it mattered, but still, it's offensive.
[121] Thanks, reading about them now!
We're having a tough week here, the 'real feel' temp yesterday at 2pm was 109F. Rather exhausting, and even a 7am dog walk it's already baking..
[124] Ooof.
Heatwave last week in the Northeast US, and more coming now. But, we're kinda used to it, not too bad. (Also I escaped to Maine for a bunch of the last one, which was perfect.)
Okay I'm glad we got another Trivno! They're great, can't have too many of 'em.
Trevino joins the party.
domingo german-- i believe in second chances for people, one hundred percent but was thinking about it in terms of the yankees-- the clean shave, protestant sort of ethic that has always permeated feels deeply hypocritical. i know this always happens in sports, but really hits harder when the yankees try to give off this sort of faux-classiness or something.
[128] 100% agree. Second chances for Chapman, German, etc, but god-forbid someone grows their hair out!
Yeah I basically agree too.
Ethics inside sports get all twisted up. Altuve will be booed for the rest of his career, but not Chapman or German. As if stealing signs was even remotely comparable to domestic violence.
[130] I don't follow the NFL but saw this morning all over Twitter they are getting flamed for giving what seems a very minimal suspension to a QB with dozens of assault claims..As you say, you got to compartmentalize a lot as a sports fan.
Chapman is still wearing long sleeves this summer??? Hope he's downing about 2 liters of Gatorade before taking the mound..
This is my nightly reminder that Chapman’s looking better. (Yes, I read and agree with the above comments.) Anyway, twelve batters faced over his past four outings. One hit (tonight) erased on a double play.
[131] Deshaun Watson, yeah that's particularly egregious, even for the NFL (which seems to me to be by far the worst league for violence against women). A six game suspension! Man, it's a good thing he didn't deflate any footballs -- then the commissioner would really have come down on him.
[134] Heavy forbid a black woman bares her pastie-covered breast during a SuperBowl half-time performance. That's where they draw the line! ;>)
Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders OK. Janet Jackson tarred and feathered.
"heaven"
Well, think of the children.
Jose Trevino in 2022: 9 homers.
Total before 2022: 9 homers.
With Watson, the problem is a decline to prosecute, otherwise he’d be spending his career in prison.
Instead, according to the Babylon Bee, he is sentenced to playing for the Browns for three years.
I was part of a jury that convicted a guy of two of three DV charges, he got three years. And it turned out he’s a pimp. I hate pimps, it’s sexual assault.
lol
Not a good look when Wandy Peralta outruns you to first.
Well, GG.
Wandy didn't want to trust throwing that to DJ. Smart move.
[139] Reading about the Watson case now and..whoa.. And WTF is wrong with the Browns??
Btw, was asked once by a local here to explain the American jury system and they were completely baffled. 'But why would regular citizens have such responsibility? It's not correct, the authorities should decide guilt or innocence'. Very different view of courts here in the land of 95% conviction rates, though they have slowly introduced a jury system now for certain types of cases.
Jazz, will have to reply later.
[142] Meanwhile, my "state of residence," CA, keeps trying to get me for jury duty. Sometimes I go through the process, sometimes I just ignore them. I hope it doesn't come back to bite me someday. [knocks wood]
Ooh, Astros really stocking up in the trade market with Mancini and Vasquez..
[144] I'd love to see 75-year old you on a trip back to visit get roped into jury duty!
Rizzo
[145] Dude, I'm not 60 yet and I'm pretty sure I've made my last trip (that's not a family matter) the the U S of A.
Aww, sad to see Monty go.
