What would happen if the Yankees gave Cano the dollar amount he wants (say it's $200 million), but on the condition that the contract is spread over some crazy number of years, like 20/$200 million, so that the average value is relatively low?
Is such a contract "illegal" in MLB? Would the union or the league put the kibosh on it?

Yes, probably the best second baseman in baseball but one player does not make a championship team. I recently re-read Buster Olney's book "The last night of the Yankee Dynasty" and the thing that strikes me most about the dynasty team was the number of strong willed players with an attitude of wining every single game. That seems to be lacking on this team. The whole team was built around that. There is no Tino Martinez, there is no Paul O'Neal, there is no Scott Brosius, no David Cone on this team. The guys like that, Petitte, Jeter, Mariano are ready for retirement after this year. Cano doesn't strike me as a leader at all,I don't sense he cares if they win or lose. Nor Tex,not Granderson-maybe CC, but he's a quiet dude. I don't know, rebuilding just makes sense to me if they can find younger players with fire in their hearts. The team that was built for 96-2001 was built by real baseball men and was put into motion a few years before, not with any Steinbrenner influence.
