Saw him once at the Beacon on a bill with John Lee Hooker & The Fabulous Thunderbirds. Great show.

Oh man. That's a major drag. He was awesome! I've played many Bobby "Blue" Bland songs over the years. And he had great drummers, like John "Jabo" Starks, from James Brown.

ok, off the iphone now...

i used to play "further up the road". also played 'love light' and many others.

of course, the times article mentions jay-z sampling something, but no mention of Whitesnake's awesome version of "ain't no love...in the heart of the city".

and DON'T make an assumption about Whitesnake. they were an awesome blues band in the 70's before they became popular, mainstream hard rock, with big hair. they had female backing vocals, horns, deep purple members and great studio musicians. anyway...

Col. Bruce Hampton was (is) a *huge* Blue Bland fan. Hampton was my first professional touring gig and I learned a lot about Blue Bland's music. I have a cool Best Of, but not enough of his music.

R.I.P. Mr. Blue Bland
