The Yankees loaded the bases against in the first inning as R.A. Dickey approached 30 pitches but he struck Mark Reynolds out without allowing a run. In the 2nd, Alex Rodriguez grounded out softly with runners on first and second to end the inning.
That, I’m sad to report, was as close as the Yanks came to scoring all night. A pair of solo home runs was enough for the Jays to beat a punchless Yankee team, 2-0. The only reason it doesn’t hurt more is because our nuts are still numb from getting kicked repeatedly last weekend, so what’s a few more belts?
So there’s no real shock. It’s just disheartening is all. Especially because Andy Pettitte really pitched a nice game. But we see where this is headed, don’t we?

I can't back this up with hard facts (and the lack of offense made this instance moot), but doesn't it seem historically as if Andy is the pitcher about whom we
most often say, "...but it was a single mistake that did him in"?
2) that's not the overall impression I have of Andy. I could be wrong, but I don't think he had a disproportionate number of hard luck games where one pitch made the difference. I think of him as a guy who usually pitched well enough to give the team a chance to win, and occasionally threw a clunker, and got shelled. When he was on, he was great, and even when he was off, he could still find a way to keep the game close. My main impression of Andy is that he was seldom a guy who made it look easy. He looked like a man at work, which is why I always appreciated him.
I'm not disheartened, I'm philosophical. 3/4 of the infield is cooked and missed most (if not all) of the season. Same with the outfield. Yankee's have to use a 4th string catcher as backup. Relying on the front end of the rotation too much never works out well, and bullpens are always going to be a crapshoot, outside of Mo.
And while I did fantasize about Mo coming on to close out the bottom of the ninth of game seven in the Bronx, I never really expected it. So I'm just going to enjoy a week plus of baseball and root for whoever is playing Bahstahn.
