SI‘s baseball preview issue is out and features contributions by Cliff Corcoran, Jay Jaffe and a feature by Eric Nusbaum. Oh, yeah, and four different covers (including Yadier Molina and some kid named Trout).

The curse of the SI cover. Tanaka will now turn into Igawa.
[1] Maybe not. Lots of great superstars have been on the cover w/o falling apart. OTOH, I'm not happy he's being tagged as an "ace." If he turns into a good #3 or #4 THIS YEAR I'd be very, very happy. Let him be an ace in a year or two.
The bad news: SI has the Yankees going 82-80
The good news: this time last year they had the Red Sox going 77-85
They play the games to prove the predictors haven't a clue. On the other hand, Joey G. has been covering for Jeter and Tex. What does he do if they don't hit? 82-80 would be about right. Then again, I didn't think they'd win 70 last year!
I think the one thing people are leaving out about the infield is this:
if it's July, and they're in the race but have a clear need at (let's say) second base...you don't think there will be a 2B to be had in a salary dump? Of course there will be. There's always a Bobby Abreu or a David Justice out there. Every year.
There is going to be a determination in this clubhouse like you haven't seen since '96. All these veterans are going to pull together, the rotation is going to dominate, and they're going to win one for Jete.
