If you had said at the beginning of the season that this would be the line up for the Friday night game of the last series of the year in Boston, you'd have been committed to an insane asylum.
That lineup is just another part of this week's storyline. It's really over.
And by it I mean this thing we've had, the one that's been daisy-chaining through the seasons since the curly-haired guy came over from the Reds and the quiet center fielder began to grow out from under Mel Hall's douchey thumb.
Every big retirement over the last several years has been tempered by an at least we've still got... Well, now, this is what we got. There are guys I like on this list, guys I'm still proud to root for. Looking at you, Gritner. Looking at you, Frankie Brains. But titans? For the first time in a lifetime, that cupboard is bare.
I'm sure the next thing is germinating under our eyes and we don't know it yet. Our kids may attend Tanaka Day or Betances Day or Pirela Day. But for right now, the string is finally broken.

I love this lineup. The only thing I wish is for Cap'n to be in it one more time (to a Daft Punk chorus no less) to lead the kids into battle and effectively pass the torch. Maybe the last game of the season? We will always have dreams as time wiles away from our grasp.
There's an odd, indescribable sensation; my throat is constructing and my medulla is in flames. I've fallen and I can't get up. I know what it means, but I don't want to hear it.
Can they get rid of the NESN feed?
The least important Yankee-Red Sox series in our lifetime.
Except, of course, for the Captain's coda on Sun.
I'm liking this Eury kid. Hit, stolen base and now a nice play.
Challenged! Out!
Great replay
Dumbest remark EVER by Leiter
Great remark by Kay.
What were those remarks?
I just got all frustrated about that error, started grumbling to myself before I realized, "Wait, it doesn't matter."
The season is over and it doesn't matter.
I wish Al Leiter, Paul O'Neill, Ken Singleton, and David Cone had a podcast over the winter. : )
Wow. Great catch!
Nice catch, Richardson!
Cervelli may has as well have a frying pan on his hand.
Horrible base running. Oi!
[18] Don't worry, it's early in spring training. Just wait for the season to start.
I had forgotten what it's like to watch meaningless games.
Day-um
Phew.
[14] Yes.
Jeez Boston, give him a night off. Derek has earned it.
Thus could be the Hammer's Bronx future on the line in this game - kinda ridiculous.
OK, looks like he slapped the glove. We've got a guy coming back who was a McSlappy.
Winning season!
