Looks like we are also getting a pretty good prospect. I still am not sure about this though.

I for one will miss Phelps, and Prado. Phelps was a good, versatile Yankee.

2) "Huh" is exactly right. I am not at all happy about Phelps' departure.

4 thelarmis   ~  Dec 19, 2014 2:16 pm

I *love* Prado!!!

Damn.

5 Alex Belth   ~  Dec 19, 2014 2:25 pm

Yeah, really like them both. So I guess this means the two kids will get a shot at second or they go out and still sign or trade for second baseman, right?

So, Eovaldi is a little more than three years younger than Phelps? They're younger at least. I always had a fondness for Phelps, and Prado actually brought a spark in his time with the Yanks. Ah well, I think I'm in a minority of Yankee fans who trust that Cashman & Co. know what they're doing. I don't mind the trade too much, but I doubt they're handing Refsnyder second base on a platter.

I'm with yinz that really liked Prado. I think that's the main thing that has me bummed here. Plus, we're already an offensive sink hole so that really worries me.

I have to think that the Yanks are going to try to get Scherzer or Shields despite their denials.

Remember the "Bubba Crosby is our center fielder" line from Cashman many moons ago?

This team is always a "win now" team. They have a bunch of aging veterans. If, as it was fairly clear, last year they didn't try to be sellers at the trade deadline, they are unlikely to get budget conscious now. I know it was Jeter's last hurrah, and it might have seemed disrespectful to surround him with prospects and castoffs, but they could not win last year as constructed and even with their thrown together pitching staff pitching their asses off. I guess part of the dilemma is who was actually moveable (Gardner and Cervelli, post injury?), and what would be the cost to the Yanks of eating salary to make them appealing to another team?

I say go get Maxie! Hell, they have spent money more foolishly before, and certainly will again.

9) Plus, picking up on your Bowie comments, Maxie's got those different colored eyes!

11 rbj   ~  Dec 19, 2014 3:36 pm

Well I'll be. Take the day off to go traveling and this happens.

So, who's on second?

12 monkeypants   ~  Dec 19, 2014 3:50 pm

[11] What.

13 Chyll Will   ~  Dec 19, 2014 4:01 pm

With all the whining and taunting from commenters on the other sites, I'm convinced this is a good move for the Yanks. Not simply being contrarian; I find that many of the loudmouths who are angered by any move Cashman makes are the same people who suddenly believe George Steinbrenner should be knighted posthumously by the Queen.

Gotta give the Yanks credit; they are going younger. now that every team in baseball can act like Big George if they want to, it's good to see Cashman addressing the vitality of the roster and the farm in more than lip service.

14 Greg G   ~  Dec 19, 2014 4:29 pm

10) I didn't know that Alex. I think Scherzer will likely get 110 mil per eye color.

If Max puts the butts in the seats, it is a good deal. Not sure how many other players on the Yanks not named Tanaka, who will be drawing in the fans?

Chyll, I'm with you on this one! I think the rotation has potential to be special..if healthy...

16 seamus   ~  Dec 19, 2014 7:10 pm

So, what are the odds that Cashman woke up this morning and thought, "I need some pitchers whose names rhyme with German. Or are German. Yeah, that counts."

17 MSM35   ~  Dec 19, 2014 7:34 pm

[13] "Vitality" I love it.

18 monkeypants   ~  Dec 19, 2014 8:12 pm

[13] I'm not as optimistic as you, and I really like Prado because of his flexibility (which is key if the team insists on carrying a million relievers and several uni-position cripples). That being said, at the end of the day, Prado is 30 y.o. and is not really an impact offensive player---his brilliant few weeks with the Yankees have blinded some to the reality that he's a solid but not outstanding offensive player.

In return, the Yankees get younger and shed a little bit of salary. I have zero confidence in the hard throwing project pitcher living up to potential...I tend to be pretty negative about any pitcher the Yankees pick up. I'll be happy if he doesn't end up going all Ed Whitson or Britt Burns on the team.

But in a remarkably short period of time, Cashman has seriously youngified the team, with Teix and Beltran due to come off the books in two years.

I bitch

[18] "I bitch, there for I am"?

21 monkeypants   ~  Dec 19, 2014 8:40 pm

[20] What the heck..I have no idea how that last line got left there. Oh well, if I can provide a little mirth in this Christmas season...

[18] the problem is that just a solid hitter, would still end up being one of our better hitters. This really irks me.

i bitch...

This whole thing just really takes me by surprise - even more than Greene for Didi . . . I've always really, really liked Phelps, but if I am objective as opposed to emotional, swapping him for Eovaldi is an upgrade. I liked what Prado did last year, but honestly, he's almost certainly on the downswing, not the upswing, and his flexibility, while useful, is only useful if he hits as well as he did in his 2 months in pinstripes, which is not likely.

Still not really sure what G Jones is here for, though - is he A-Rod insurance, or is does he mean that A-Rod is gone?

Or are there more trades coming? I believe there are no more free agent signings coming.

[18] - [23] I think we have a new Banter tradition!

25 Shaun P.   ~  Dec 19, 2014 11:44 pm

[9] et al - I wish the Yanks had signed Kris Medlen. Low cost, possibly very high upside if he is healthy. Big if, but still, a great signing by the Royals.

This has been a fascinating offseason so far - lots of moves, and yet two of the biggest free agents are still on the market, almost by themselves! And it isn't even Christmas yet!

26 monkeypants   ~  Dec 20, 2014 12:29 am

[24] Still not really sure what G Jones is here for, though

Presumably to backup ARod, Teix, and Beltran, the Yankees' triple-headed corner sick ward.

27 Chyll Will   ~  Dec 20, 2014 2:41 am

[26] He might step in front of Alex at the rate things are going. Joe will still find a way to put him in the lineup every day, starting or not, but Cash is trying to cage him it seems. Or light a fire under him so he tries to imagine he ball is Cashman's head and tees off at every at-bat. If he were to do that actually, I'd say the money they're dumping on him is not all that bad for this season anyway.

Tooptomistic, perhaps... >;)

28 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Dec 20, 2014 4:32 am

[24] We still need to make up a Banter glossary some day! I know the Score Truck origin but can't remember tooptomistic..

Yikes, now the house is shaking again, damn earthquakes..i bitch, for sure..

29 RIYank   ~  Dec 20, 2014 11:26 am

[28] Toooptimistic (note the three consecutive 'o's) was Mattpat.

Stay stable, Mr OK!

[28] jesus, stay safe man.

31 coleman42   ~  Dec 21, 2014 12:18 pm

Eovaldi Bears a striking resemblance to our old friend Pavano. Let's hope he fares better than Carl Baby.

32 Chyll Will   ~  Dec 21, 2014 3:45 pm

Larry Rothschild's been pretty effective lately with improving young pitchers' mechanics; only hope it doesn't lead to shoulder issues halfway through the season. Learning good pitch selection will help.
