Heating Up

the human torch

The Yanks won’t cooperate in any losing business. They beat the Giants 5-2, behind a solid start from Nathan Eovaldi, to take 2 of 3 over the weekend.

Still, Mr. Chapman is on the block and the rumor mill is getting hotter than July 31—dig.

I am sorry, but Gleyber Torres does not excite me. I am sure I am missing something and he's supposed to be the next coming of A-Rod.
But we are talking about easily the most dominate closer (the fastest ever. Ever.) in baseball. I want Mickey Mantle or Ken Griffey. Not a big K rate, mild power SS. We don't need a shortstop.

I don't know anything about Gleyber Torres, but I do want to deal Chapman, and now. His value to the Yankees is very small. I mean, he's been fun to watch, but now I've had that experience.
You're trading two months of a relief pitcher. He's a very very good relief pitcher, but come on, that's probably worth one win.

I like Didi at SS, but hey, if something better comes your way . . . It's a business. On the other hand, what could you flip Torres for?

1) Chapman is not the most dominant closer in baseball. You ain't getting a Mantle or Griffey for a rented closer, no matter how hard he throws. That said, I want some of what you're smoking!

lol

It may be odd to grab a young shortstop but how close is he to playing? I really like Didi so I hope this isn't part of a plan to replace him. I'm sure there is a plan here. I just want to like it.

Torres is 19, in High A. AA, next year, the AAA in 18. 22 y.o. rookie SS? I can live with it even if the Cubs lock up Chapman for 4 years. Would still have Miller and Betances.

[6] Chapman did enjoy his time here; more hope than usual that he could re-sign here, though obviously the Yanks' priorities are much higher than closer. But I still have to hold my breath on these type of deals; seems like there's a systematic disconnect between AA, Triple-A and the majors with the Yanks (i.e. Triple-A either being irrelevant or prospects becoming irrelevant there). I hope I'm wrong...

8 rbj   ~  Jul 25, 2016 1:41 pm

Adam Warren is bunny hoping back to the Bronx as part of the deal. And it seems there's no long term deal for Chapman, so Cash can sign him over winter.

9 RIYank   ~  Jul 25, 2016 1:45 pm

Looks like it's a done deal.
We also get an outfield scrub, and welcome back Justice Warren!

I'm happy with it. I definitely wanted to see him traded.

Hm, Fangraphs' Dan Farnsworth rates Torres the Cubs' top prospect:

"Torres looks to me like an elite major league hitter who will have situational power, making pitchers pay for mistakes left up in the zone."

Well, anyway there's clearly some good upside here. And clashing with Didi doesn't worry me. We could trade one of them, or Torres could play third.

More analysis on the deal

[9] If Didi continues the way he is, look for Torres to be at third. But it's at least a couple of years away unless he's hitting nearly .500 at each level (basing my guess on Yanks' recent history with prospects).

11 Chyll Will   ~  Jul 25, 2016 2:59 pm

Well, since we can't comment on the new post, I'll say it here: good trade so far. Yanks haven't made trades like this in a while, and Cash finessed this properly; buy low and sell high.

12 RIYank   ~  Jul 25, 2016 6:00 pm

Hey yeah -- AB, if you see this, open up the comments on the Chapman/Torres entry, please.

Will, come to think of it

13 RIYank   ~  Jul 25, 2016 6:01 pm

Whoops!

Come to think of it... when was the last time the Yankees sold a good player for good prospects?? Are we talking pre-Jeter era?

14 rbj   ~  Jul 25, 2016 6:02 pm

Fielder is out for the season. Trade Beltran for . . . ?

15 RIYank   ~  Jul 25, 2016 6:28 pm

Hmmm.
I don't think they have anyone we want. Oh, well, we could use a power-hitting first baseman, but somehow I don't think the Tigers would be interested...

16 rbj   ~  Jul 25, 2016 6:30 pm

Fielders with the Rangers. From the Tigers I want Steven Moyà. Lefty hitting outfielder with power, but projects more as a first baseman. Long legs.

17 RIYank   ~  Jul 25, 2016 6:34 pm

Oh, jeez. I was just watching the Red Sox, is why I was thinking Tigers.
The Rangers have top OF prospects. I'd take one for Beltran in a heartbeat.

18 RIYank   ~  Jul 25, 2016 6:35 pm

Ah, have you seen Moya in Toledo, is that why?

19 RIYank   ~  Jul 25, 2016 7:15 pm

Way to work Keuchel's pitch count.
Six pitches for the first inning. At this rate, no way he lasts more than 17 innings.

20 RIYank   ~  Jul 25, 2016 7:15 pm

Oh, man.
This could be a long night.

21 rbj   ~  Jul 25, 2016 7:18 pm

[18] yup. Plus I have his Mud Hens bobble head.

22 rbj   ~  Jul 25, 2016 7:21 pm

Probably Alex closed the Chapman thread because of the domestic violence issue. From reading his accounts over the years, his dad wasn't easy to live with. I'm fine with that.

Glad to see sports taking this issue seriously

24 rbj   ~  Jul 25, 2016 7:34 pm

Nice, Ref

25 RIYank   ~  Jul 25, 2016 7:37 pm

This whole wild pitch thing is getting old.

26 Chyll Will   ~  Jul 25, 2016 7:40 pm

RI, I was thinking about that and frankly, I don't think they often make trades like this at all, never mind ones that work out. Usually it's the other way around. Perhaps the closest to that scenario would be getting three players for starting pitcher Doc Medich; among them a neophyte second baseman who didn't turn out to be that bad. Hey, if Didi does at least that well, it would be one of Cadhman's best trades ever. The Yanks have given up more All Star prospects than they've gotten, but they have made a bunch of good trades. I can't think of a scenario in modern times where they traded a good major leaguer for a minors prospect who turned into even a decent major leaguer, much less an All Star.

27 RIYank   ~  Jul 25, 2016 8:22 pm

Yeah, it's kind of a new era.
I wonder if it's because of, or in spite of, Hal.

28 rbj   ~  Jul 25, 2016 8:25 pm

Ah tied up. Was getting a glass of Tequila disgusted as a margarita.

29 RIYank   ~  Jul 25, 2016 8:35 pm

Gin and tonic for me. Margaritas are too much trouble.
Oh, wait, I get it. Maybe your kind isn't too much trouble!

30 rbj   ~  Jul 25, 2016 8:37 pm

Sister made it. Prefer Vodka or Boubon, but it's free and not a sweet drink. Rum hangovers are the worst

31 rbj   ~  Jul 25, 2016 8:47 pm

Come on, Big Pine. Get the rookie

32 rbj   ~  Jul 25, 2016 8:48 pm

Phew

33 RIYank   ~  Jul 25, 2016 8:49 pm

Margaritas are very nice on a hot night. Although, maybe we should be having Piñeda Coladas!

34 RIYank   ~  Jul 25, 2016 9:04 pm

If we had a few guys who could hit, I really feel like the team would be something like 70-28. I guess that's impossible. But don't they hold teams to three runs very often?
