This was a bit of a shocker.

Not sure what this means for LeMahieu? Is he our first baseman? Kiner-Falefa could be a super utility guy and LeMahieu could jump in when Donaldson is on the IL or needs a breather? Maybe Boone employs the rotating DH spot, because he has a team full of IL candidates in Donaldson, Hicks, Stanton, Judge and Voit?

Maybe the Yanks will trade Voit, Andujar and German and try to get another starter now or a quality backup especially in center if they don't bring back Gardy? The universal DH should open some opportunities for Voit and he is a serviceable 1B. Andujar has pretty low stock value but maybe a DH too? German has a live arm and maybe some team takes him on and he matures and hopefully only lays his hands on baseballs from now on.

Sorry to see Gio leave but now they have an actual SS on the team, and while I will always have a soft spot for the Kraaken, he just couldn't make that next step. It's too bad that he didn't get a shot at playing first because that might have been an easier task than framing pitches and might have solved another spot for the Yanks? It doesn't solve the fact that he is a power righty, which also seems to be the problem with Voit. I think the pressure Sanchez was under contributed to his unease at the plate, but when he was on, he could carry the team. Unfortunately, the Yanks have too many players like him. All these streaky power hitters, and you can't get by with just one hot hand (See Stanton in 2021 Playoffs). We need LeMahieu, Hicks and Torres to hit for average.

Speaking of streaky guys, Gallo might actually become a force in a year or two when they address the shift in baseball. Not sure how he fits on this squad for next year, and doesn't seem to be a guy that the Yanks need long term but it would be interesting to see how he improves, if they manage to change the shift rules?

I never felt that the Kraken got a fair shake from a big portion of the fan base, or from parts of print-based media. I am sad to see him not on the Yankees but I also think he really needed a change of scenery. I hope it helps him.

[1] I think even 135 games of a healthy Donaldson - a former and quite worthy MVP and excellent fielder - is a huge upgrade to the offense. Particularly given we don't know which ball the Yankees will be given to play with this year and so who knows which version of DJLM we see. (How is the ball scandal not a bigger deal!?!)

But my biggest takeaway was that the Yankees aren't done. I think they could definitely make it work with the guys and positions they have right now, particularly when small injuries inevitably come up. But is this really the catching tandem? I thought this was 2022, not 2013 (with all due respect to the Stewart-Cervelli tandem, which I recall vociferously defending during Spring Training that year on these very pages).

[2] Pretty sure that Tim Locastro is in camp and I expect he is the backup CF now. I would love to see Gardner back too, but if he isn't, at least there is a true backup CF option on the roster.

4) This could be Cash playing possum and Kiner-Falefa is going to be a backup and they end up trading Torres, sticking LeMahieu at 2nd and getting Trevor Story but probably not. I don't know if this team is going to move on from Voit? He came into camp looking good and if he can stay healthy, he is the cheapest option at 1B. It is sad that one of the richest franchises, has changed their stripes but here we are.

Olson to the Braves and that most likely leaves Dodgers and Yanks in on Freeman? Maybe Jays step in to grab Freeman but I think he wants to go to a big city. I think he goes to LA because that is his town.

Old Man Steinbrenner is rolling over in his grave that these Yanks are not in on all the big stars. Remember when Cashman would strike early and the rest of the league had to catch up to him?

What if they kept Voit and they just move LeMahieu all over the diamond to give guys a breather?

As presently constructed, this outfield is too crowded. I don't know how you get anyone to take Hicks. Gallo isn't all that tradable and Judge is the franchise. The Yanks could trade Stanton, which seemed unthinkable as the season started last year. Maybe strike the iron while it is still hot? I don't think any of those guys are productive as a 4th outfielder, they need to be in the lineup most nights to stay productive. Judge in center isn't a long range plan.

Looks like Cashman is coming back with another Goodwill gem, Anthony Rizzo! Is he vaxxed? Probably not, but who cares? He and Judge can play at Baltimore at least, which is the only team they match up well against. Although, they were only 9-7 against them and they will have their wunderkind catcher, Adley Rutschman this year so who knows?

5) 2 years and 32 million for Rizzo and he can opt out next year.

Maybe they keep Voit as DH and take turns and everyone gets 1 off day a week? But with so many teams able to employ DHs, the Yanks have too many candidates for DH: Voit, Andujar and Stanton. Plus a lot of IL candidates: Stanton, Voit, Donaldson, Hicks and to some degree Judge.

They should rotate the outfield too, unless they can jettison someone, Gallo? They should play Stanton in the field.

I've been on Team Kracken for the longest, and I'll miss him. Sure, part of it is because of his stunning half-rookie season, but I actually came to like him more during his struggles. People expected him to match that debut and hit .320 with 45 homers every season, and that's a terrible standard to be measured against, especially when you're a young kid struggling in New York City.

Also, it bothered me as a human being to see how he was treated by some of the New York press, as some commentators even criticized his English. In many ways Gary became a symbol of what's wrong in baseball today -- the way we play it, the way we coach it, and the way we analyze it. No one was ever satisfied with who Gary was. Gary himself forgot that he was a great hitter and chose to be just a slugger. Fans wanted him to win multiple MVPs, coaches wanted him to frame his pitches (such a waste of time), crusty old reporters wanted him speak their language.

Because of all that, I will never stop rooting for him. When he launches his first homer into Monument Park while wearing a Twins jersey, I'll stand in my living room and cheer. Hope the fans in the Bronx do also.

Hank, I’m generally with you on Gary but a .205 average with 20+ homers is a bit much to put up with year after year, especially when your ace requests another backstop.

He is the ultimate change-of-scenery guy and I hope he does well in Minn in the hybrid C/DH role they carve out for him.

I will be bummed if they trade Gleyber. Please give him this year to settle in or not.

Well if they get another starter great, but this team still has a question mark at CF and an offensive blackhole at SS and catcher. Meanwhile, if the Jays get J Ram you can pencil them in to win the division by double digits

Well, there's your answer about Luke Voit; swapped to San Diego for another tall young pitcher with upside the Yankees believe they see better than anyone else. Panning other teams' 40-man rosters for gold or diamonds is one thing, but the Yanks need better results from their coaching and development. Whatever they're doing when most of the players they bring to the majors is not working long-term and needs serious upgrading; saving money would not even be an issue if they could develop or coach their players to sustain long-term productivity rather than a short burst followed by languishing in inexplicable mediocrity throughout the next one-two-few seasons.

In other words, if they want to have "championships" they have to be far more proactive in supporting their talent on the big stage than they even appear to have been, fair or not. It hasn't been a good look in a while, and that's almost as important as picking the right players to compete with (which has obviously been an issue as well).

Do better, Yankees; stop being a repeat from the 80's.

That seems like a lot and I just hope he doesn’t punish the Yanks. He was tied to them a few times but obviously they don’t want to block the youngsters that they won’t have to pay big bucks for.

The Yanks desperately need a starter now. It would make sense that they were shoring up their D and then going all in for a great rotation.

Cole, severino, Montgomery and Manaea would be pretty good.

Even with the expanded rosters are they a shoe-in? All of the teams that were behind them got a lot better, while we basically treaded water.
