Tonight CC stands for Clean Crib.  As in the Mrs is returning from a week at her sisters’ in New Mexico tomorrow.  And you know I’m a have this place lookin respectable by the time she comes through the door.  So I’m doing laundry, and I’m cooking Ratatouille and I can’t wait to watch CC Sabathia pitch tonight.

I don’t know about you, but I love Saturday night games.  I know I’m showing my age.  I don’t go out on Saturday night.   We go to sleep when people are headed out.  Pretty soon I’m going to be playing Bridge.  But I like getting stuff done during the day and then getting to chill out to a game at night.  It’s a small, good treat.

The Royals had a rough time against the lefty Andy Pettitte yesterday.  I hope that Sabathia can build on that.  KC does not not have an imposing line-up.  Let’s see if the big fella shook the nerves out of his system in Baltimore and…

Let’s Go Yan-Kees.

As someone who works on Saturdays and lives on the west coast, I HATE Saturday night games. They start right when I am leaving work (at 4:30 here) and by the time I get home, settled in etc, I've missed a whole bunch of it, if I even remember to watch it at all. Most Saturdays I look forward to a day game to get me through the dead hours in the middle of the day.

Oh wells, here's hoping for a rebound for CC!

2 Just Fair   ~  Apr 11, 2009 6:09 pm

[0] I'm with ya'. I remember hearing a comic say, "you know you're old when it's 10 o'clock on Saturday night and you're wondering if it's too early to go to bed." : ) Drew Carey, I think. I hope CC is on his game tonight. Another 7 IP if 1 run ball sounds about right.

3 zack   ~  Apr 11, 2009 6:49 pm

Inexplicably, Mike Soscia actually fails to call for a bunt with a man on second, down 1 in the bottom of the 9th and no outs, resulting in a Juan Rivera ground out that doesn't advance the runner. I don't get it...

4 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 11, 2009 7:06 pm

People talk about how boring baseball is. I'm convinced these people only see Yankee/Orioles and Red Sox/Angels games.

Joe Saunders and Brad Penny veeeeery sloooowly got into about three three ball counts every inning. It was excruciating.

5 randym77   ~  Apr 11, 2009 7:15 pm

Hey, I like bridge!

I'm pretty sure it cost me more than a few points of GPA when I was in college.

6 rbj   ~  Apr 11, 2009 7:18 pm

What the hell are all these damn kids doing on the lawn?

7 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 11, 2009 7:19 pm

Is Horacio Ramirez one of those shitty pitchers we hit or one of the shitty pitchers we dont?

8 rbj   ~  Apr 11, 2009 7:19 pm

[7] I think you just got your answer.

9 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 11, 2009 7:20 pm

Boom Boom Bloomquist is the Rightfielder?

Is this man's bat really something that you need to get in the lineup by any means necessary?

10 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 11, 2009 7:25 pm

THE SABATHIA STRIKEOIUT DROUGHT IS OVER

11 Just Fair   ~  Apr 11, 2009 7:28 pm

Bring dat' funk. Nasty.

12 rbj   ~  Apr 11, 2009 7:28 pm

Our long national nightmare is over!

13 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 11, 2009 7:30 pm

That's my line.

14 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 11, 2009 7:30 pm

Kay is such a failure.

15 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 11, 2009 7:34 pm

I hope we never see <.500 again after today. Or .500 for that matter. Lets hit the ground running this year.

16 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 11, 2009 7:37 pm

David Cone sums up the Mussina case.

17 ny2ca2dc   ~  Apr 11, 2009 7:39 pm

Now there's the CC we've been looking for

18 RIYank   ~  Apr 11, 2009 7:46 pm

Oh come on, Joba, throw the kid some real heat. Don't baby him.

19 RIYank   ~  Apr 11, 2009 7:48 pm

Swish!

20 rbj   ~  Apr 11, 2009 7:48 pm

The Royals don't seem to be all that good.

21 RIYank   ~  Apr 11, 2009 7:50 pm

No, not all that good. Can we play them 36 times this season, please? I know Jorge would enjoy it.

22 Just Fair   ~  Apr 11, 2009 7:50 pm

Now this is entertainment.

23 ny2ca2dc   ~  Apr 11, 2009 7:52 pm

[7] the former

24 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 11, 2009 7:56 pm

Willie Bloomquist is embarrassing himself in right field. This is like when Joe Torre threw Enrique Wilson to the wolves to send a message to the front office.

25 RIYank   ~  Apr 11, 2009 7:57 pm

Now we don't have to worry about the superstition.

26 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Apr 11, 2009 7:59 pm

[0] Alex, I got your solution right here..been watching MLB baseball games in the morning over here for years now. I now associate Yankees games with coffee, cake and whatever objectionable foods my lady might have ready in the morning (Japanese food at breakfast doesn't work for me..)

Even better, Japanese baseball games start at 6:30 latest and move MUCH faster thank MLB. Early to bed it is!

Early but..Big Papi is hitting .125 so far..Could the Sox offense be merely "good" this year?

27 RIYank   ~  Apr 11, 2009 8:00 pm

[26] Youkalis is raking, though.

28 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 11, 2009 8:00 pm

Teixeira having a mysterious wrist injury can only lead to lewd jokes.

29 rbj   ~  Apr 11, 2009 8:01 pm

Ya know, I kind of like this new Yankee philosophy of playing well against bad teams.

30 RIYank   ~  Apr 11, 2009 8:02 pm

Unless I am mistaken, this is the second time in as many days that you've used the word 'philosophy' in that way, rbj.

31 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Apr 11, 2009 8:04 pm

[27] He'll have a good year but not as good as last season.

32 rbj   ~  Apr 11, 2009 8:05 pm

[30] Uh oh, I'm repeating myself, and saying the same thing over again. I blame it on being sober. Best go off and grab a beer.

33 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Apr 11, 2009 8:06 pm

Ransom whiffed by H-Ram..yuck..

34 RIYank   ~  Apr 11, 2009 8:09 pm

Good evening for a beer.
I have a glass of Zinfandel, myself.

35 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Apr 11, 2009 8:14 pm

Albert Pujols with the granny and 3-run dinger today, 7RBIs..what a player! Wonder if the age rumors are true..

36 RIYank   ~  Apr 11, 2009 8:16 pm

Nice.
I'm starting to like the big fat guy.

37 Just Fair   ~  Apr 11, 2009 8:17 pm

[28] He got a hold of Matsui's stash.

38 rbj   ~  Apr 11, 2009 8:21 pm

[37] With hi's riding the bench tonight, I hope Tex doesn't lose his stroke.

39 RIYank   ~  Apr 11, 2009 8:24 pm

I just now grasped the concept of a "no-doubter".
That was a serious slug.

40 Just Fair   ~  Apr 11, 2009 8:24 pm

Tex who?

41 randym77   ~  Apr 11, 2009 8:24 pm

Holy crap. Swisher is en fuego.

42 rbj   ~  Apr 11, 2009 8:25 pm

Nick's got the hard half of the cycle out of the way.

43 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Apr 11, 2009 8:27 pm

Swish!

[38] He can pine-tar his handle while on the bench

44 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 11, 2009 8:43 pm

A little bit of a floating strikezone going on.

45 RIYank   ~  Apr 11, 2009 8:43 pm

Well that was ugly.

46 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 11, 2009 8:43 pm

That was no good.

47 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Apr 11, 2009 8:43 pm

[43] Yikes, did I clear the room with that one??

The Royals lineup is awful..how could anyone have picked them as a "sleeper" this year?

48 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 11, 2009 8:44 pm

[47] The division does nothing for me. The pitching staff might be enough to sneak by.

49 Just Fair   ~  Apr 11, 2009 8:44 pm

Well at least Cody's pulling his weight at the plate. cack.

50 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 11, 2009 8:45 pm

Don't walk Bloomquist

Kay is screaming about the soul of a pitcher or something

51 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 11, 2009 8:46 pm

Also, don't let Bloomquist hit the ball 350 feet

52 RIYank   ~  Apr 11, 2009 8:46 pm

[47] Maybe it was someone who misunderstood what 'sleeper' means?

53 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Apr 11, 2009 8:46 pm

[50] Royals radio feed on here..really funny commercials about "catching the Royals fever this year!"..symptoms must include low .OBP and questionable free-agent signings..

54 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 11, 2009 8:48 pm

Who do you guys pick for the AL Central? I'd probably go with Minnesota, but I have no idea.

55 rbj   ~  Apr 11, 2009 8:49 pm

Phew!

56 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 11, 2009 8:49 pm

I hope this is CC's version of a bad inning this year.

57 monkeypants   ~  Apr 11, 2009 8:50 pm

[50] I don't get to see to many Yankees games, but I'm getting the Yes feed tonight. So, it is pretty clear that O'Neill really, really does not like Kay.

I'm trying to remember another announcing team where there was clear animosity in the booth. Maybe the classic old MNF days, with Cosell?

58 Just Fair   ~  Apr 11, 2009 8:50 pm

If I was commissioner I would fine Crisp $10,000 every time he steps out of the box to redo his batting gloves. (and everyone else for that mattter) Kinda bugs me.

59 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Apr 11, 2009 8:50 pm

[54] Crapshoot..Twins offense stinks, Indians look awful so far..ChiSox maybe? Tigers offense nice so far but that pitching..

60 RIYank   ~  Apr 11, 2009 8:50 pm

[54] I guess I'd go with the White Sox. Better pitching than KC, and much better line-up.

61 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Apr 11, 2009 8:52 pm

[57] Really? I get the impression though that O'neil is the kind of guy who doesn't like anyone.

62 monkeypants   ~  Apr 11, 2009 8:52 pm

[58] Didn't the league try to crack down on that sort of thing a year or three ago? I guess that never really worked out.

63 monkeypants   ~  Apr 11, 2009 8:53 pm

[61] That may be correct.

64 rbj   ~  Apr 11, 2009 8:53 pm

[54] Not KC, probably not Tigers, and with a 0-5 start I doubt Indians. Toss up between Twins and White Sox again.

65 RIYank   ~  Apr 11, 2009 8:55 pm

Chicago's starters are quite a bit better than Minnie's.

66 RIYank   ~  Apr 11, 2009 8:57 pm

Royals' fans have to be screaming, "NO, DO NOT WALK BRETT GARDNER YOU IDIOT."

67 randym77   ~  Apr 11, 2009 8:57 pm

[61] Maybe, but there's special animosity between him and Kay. I've been really stunned by some of the things they've said to each other in the booth.

Actually, I think they've been getting along much better lately.

68 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Apr 11, 2009 8:59 pm

[67] Really?? That sounds kind of fun, need to listen to YES more often maybe..
I was impressed by the Orioles tv team the other day, mellow but good analysis.

69 RIYank   ~  Apr 11, 2009 9:02 pm

9-pitch walk.

70 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 11, 2009 9:02 pm

Like seeing Jeter do that

71 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Apr 11, 2009 9:03 pm

Must be some golf fans on the Banter..I personally can't get into it. Is golf even a "sport"? Seems more like darts or billiards to me, hard to do but..Masters coverage here on local tv is extensive. They lurrrrrrve golf over here! Between golf and the new Tampa Bay love on tv, I've yet to see a Yankees game live..sigh..

72 RIYank   ~  Apr 11, 2009 9:07 pm

[71] I would chime in here, but "Is golf a sport?" is a favorite topic on Bonehead Sportstalk Radio New England, so I feel like I lose 40 IQ points when I say anything about it.

73 rbj   ~  Apr 11, 2009 9:07 pm

[71] I've only played miniature golf. To me it is more of a skill game, like darts or pool. Just about to do a practice round of darts here. One of the first things I did once I bought my house was to finally have a real dartboard. Can't really do that in many apartments.

74 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Apr 11, 2009 9:08 pm

[72] Hah, that's good. A guy I know here tried to convince me that golf and judo were the worl's "purest" sports..had no idea what he was talking about..

75 rbj   ~  Apr 11, 2009 9:11 pm

Speaking of "sports" they need to get nonsense like synchronized swimming out of the Olympics and keep baseball in.

76 RIYank   ~  Apr 11, 2009 9:13 pm

Oh, Swish, nice job.

Okay, CC can definitely start the seventh.

77 rbj   ~  Apr 11, 2009 9:15 pm

Bat and glove, is there anything Swisher can't do?

Oh boy, he's leading off and it's a odd inning, so the Yankees should score 2 runs. (Did it in 1st, 3rd, & 5th)

Double or single, Nick.

78 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Apr 11, 2009 9:15 pm

87 pitches..easily can go to 7th and 8th.

79 PJ   ~  Apr 11, 2009 9:15 pm

"Oh, there's a New Mexico!" - Homer Simpson

80 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Apr 11, 2009 9:17 pm

[79] Huh?? Cracked me up though!

81 seamus   ~  Apr 11, 2009 9:17 pm

[78] i would expect 1 more inning unless he throws less than 10 pitches maybe.

82 rbj   ~  Apr 11, 2009 9:18 pm

Absent a batting around inning, no cycle for Nick.

83 RIYank   ~  Apr 11, 2009 9:20 pm

No way CC pitches the 8th. They won't want him to throw more than 100, and even a quick inning would get him too close to start the 8th.

84 RIYank   ~  Apr 11, 2009 9:24 pm

Oh come on, Rob. Patience.

85 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Apr 11, 2009 9:25 pm

Tejada had 6 Ks..good stuff?

86 PJ   ~  Apr 11, 2009 9:25 pm

Just a reference to Alex's wife returning from his sister-in-law's... is all...

;)

87 RIYank   ~  Apr 11, 2009 9:27 pm

[85] Yes, deceptive, changing planes, etc.

88 RIYank   ~  Apr 11, 2009 9:30 pm

Good point by Cone on how to manage Chamberlain's innings. (That is Cone, right?)

He says it makes more sense to have him go fewer starts but let him go deeper into games.

89 Just Fair   ~  Apr 11, 2009 9:33 pm

Those 1-3's are an adventure. : )

90 rbj   ~  Apr 11, 2009 9:35 pm

So who pitches the 9th? I can't imagine sending CC out for the shutout this early in the season.

Edwar?

91 RIYank   ~  Apr 11, 2009 9:36 pm

What, you don't enjoy seeing Sabathia leap cat-like off the mound and pounce on the ball? You don't appreciate his whirl-and-fire? You don't love the Swisher scoop?

92 RIYank   ~  Apr 11, 2009 9:37 pm

[90] Uh.
You're getting ahead of yourself. Someone still has to pitch the 8th.
Veras, I figure.

93 rbj   ~  Apr 11, 2009 9:39 pm

[92] D'oh! I'm also keeping track of the Mudhens' game. They'll be heading to the ninth.

94 RIYank   ~  Apr 11, 2009 9:40 pm

Oh, okay. I was just thinking what an interesting philosophy you had!
;)

95 RIYank   ~  Apr 11, 2009 9:42 pm

Looks like it's Veras for the eighth.

96 randym77   ~  Apr 11, 2009 9:45 pm

Holy cow. Still CC. Veras must be for the 9th.

97 RIYank   ~  Apr 11, 2009 9:45 pm

Wow, was I [83] wrong!

98 PJ   ~  Apr 11, 2009 9:45 pm

That's a good bounce back by Sabathia... really established the fastball early, and it was more than adequate, even from the stretch!

99 rbj   ~  Apr 11, 2009 9:49 pm

[94] I'm still working on the "Ninth inning comes before the eighth inning" philosophy. Pretty hard to do, and theosophy is no help either.

A ha!

100 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 11, 2009 9:49 pm

I'm not sure what the point of that was

101 Yankster   ~  Apr 11, 2009 9:50 pm

I can't help but recall the tone on the banter this last off season: it was dismal! And now, with Posada and Cano doing some magic and Swisher stepping up, is there anyone out there that is still negative? Seems like a good time to go back to neutral. Can't wait to go back and look through the comments to see who has switched direction.

102 RIYank   ~  Apr 11, 2009 9:50 pm

Interesting. I wonder why Girardi wanted him to get two more outs. Cone's theory about "stretching him out" doesn't make much sense to me. But it might make sense to Girardi. Or maybe he figures Veras is good for 4 outs but dubious for 6?

103 monkeypants   ~  Apr 11, 2009 9:53 pm

[99] Does it have something to do with [134]?

104 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 11, 2009 9:55 pm

All we need is for the Royals to either not score or score 3-5 runs in the ninth

105 rbj   ~  Apr 11, 2009 9:56 pm

[103] Oh, forgot about that. I'll have to work that in.

[101] I'll bet MattPat will find something to be negative about. Heck, Matsui isn't anywhere near the Mendoza line.

106 RIYank   ~  Apr 11, 2009 9:57 pm

Relax, Mattpat. Kyle's on the other side now.

107 monkeypants   ~  Apr 11, 2009 9:58 pm

[102] What was his pitch count? Maybe they were going on a pretty strict limit, i.e. he's pulled the after the batter who hits during pitch number X.

108 RIYank   ~  Apr 11, 2009 10:00 pm

[107] Sabathia finished with 108 pitches, 73 for strikes.

109 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 11, 2009 10:00 pm

[106] I have the Royals in my 13 run pool. They've already scored 2 runs (three times) and 1 run. I need a total other than those two.

110 RIYank   ~  Apr 11, 2009 10:02 pm

Oh, I misunderstood.

111 monkeypants   ~  Apr 11, 2009 10:02 pm

[101] I agree. I think that last season all of the frustration of the previous few years--whether justified or not, whether it had to do with not winning the world series, or blowing the series against the sox, or against Torre, or for Torre, or against Cashman, etc.--just built up and boiled over. Not making ht playoffs, while certainly not a "good" thing, may have been largely cathartic for many Banterers. Perhaps expectations have been adjusted, perspective refocused, etc.??

112 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 11, 2009 10:03 pm

Matsui runs up the infield grass on a walk. Don't see that alot.

113 monkeypants   ~  Apr 11, 2009 10:03 pm

[107] Certainly not an even number. Who knows.

114 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 11, 2009 10:06 pm

It gives him 12 IP even on the year. I doubt that has anything to do with it, but who the hell knows.

115 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 11, 2009 10:08 pm

Flash sounds exhausted.

116 PJ   ~  Apr 11, 2009 10:10 pm

[102[ It's possible Veras wasn't ready to come in yet...

117 PJ   ~  Apr 11, 2009 10:10 pm

If I were Kay, Cone, and Flash... I'd be ready for some BBQ right about now!

;)

118 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 11, 2009 10:11 pm

He swings like Ruben Sierra.

119 RIYank   ~  Apr 11, 2009 10:11 pm

[116] Yeah, maybe. Girardi was on the phone while CC was pitching the 8th, so that fits.

120 rbj   ~  Apr 11, 2009 10:12 pm

Um, this isn't what I want.

121 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 11, 2009 10:12 pm

I don't like Jose Veras.

122 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 11, 2009 10:13 pm

God damnit Veras. I demand you give up a HR now.

123 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 11, 2009 10:13 pm

Nevermind.

124 RIYank   ~  Apr 11, 2009 10:14 pm

126 monkeypants   ~  Apr 11, 2009 10:15 pm

127 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 11, 2009 10:16 pm

I think Swisher is drunk.

129 RIYank   ~  Apr 11, 2009 10:18 pm

Okay, folks, Joba vs. Gil Meche tomorrow. 2-0 for the sweep?

130 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 11, 2009 10:19 pm

2-0 sounds good to me. anything but x-1 or x-2

131 PJ   ~  Apr 11, 2009 10:20 pm

I'll take that matchup, RIY! I like the three going in Tampa, too (Wang, Burnett, Pettite)...

;)

132 PJ   ~  Apr 11, 2009 10:21 pm

Lata RBJ! Have a great evening!

133 RIYank   ~  Apr 11, 2009 10:25 pm

Good, I'm psyched too. Very rested bullpen, so in case Joba takes a lot of pitches to throw his 6 1/3 shutout innings we can go Bruney, maybe Coke for a couple of outs, then Mo to stamp on the neck. I'm drooling already...

134 PJ   ~  Apr 11, 2009 10:27 pm

Well, you know the drill... like the rest of 'em, if Joba has command of number one, it'll be more of the same.

Do we know if too much BP is the trouble with Tex's wrist?

Sounds like that to me...

135 PJ   ~  Apr 11, 2009 10:28 pm

That... or he dropped his wallet... and hurt his wrist picking it up...

;)

136 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Apr 11, 2009 10:43 pm

thelarmis, if you are out there tonight, I got "Roll Call" by Hank Mobley on vinyl last night. Went on a used record spree, Art Pepper live at the Village Vanguard (with Elvin Jones!), Jackie McLean "4,5,6", and Harold Land "Mapenzi". The records shops would bankrupt you here, man!
