[5] stop your complaining - it is trending upward :}
[4] i'm sure mattpatt considers snack cashman's moby dick
although i am not a huge fan of microeconomics - the concept of opportunity cost is one of the best things micro has advanced.
applying it to this situation, i really don't see how moving phil to the rotation and finding another reliver on the waiver wire is not being pursued - hopefully it is behind the scenes.
[7] Yeah, sorry about. I'll try to be more positive, but yesterday sort of broke me. Oh, and I will not respond to your comment about Hughes-to-the-rotation.
[10] yeah i saw that too. hopefully a broken middle finger is not something that remains a long-term issue. the lost development time sure suck though.
we really made buehrle work hard to start the game!
yeah, first thing i saw - baseball wise - today, was Pontoon being DFA'ed. i'm sure Cashman is salivating and Mattpat and is contemplating what building to jump off...
hey, any mechanics on this board? i think we need someone to look under the hood of our score truck - something is amiss.
[22] hey man! i wasn't around yesterday, when i think Danks pitched. did you have that store in P'burgh? we had a Danks dep't store on the corner of Allen & Beaver, downtown State College. i got 3 of my earrings pierced there...
hopefully, our defense is contagious and switched dugouts today!
[34] yeah, they got gone many years ago. this was early 90's. they were already gone by mid-90's. small-ish dep't store... how long have you been in P'burgh? yins like it? originally a new yorker, like many of us?
[39] i'm originally a jersey boy. I've been in Pittsburgh for four years. But I've been in western PA for 13 years. Pittsburgh/State College being the closest "cities."
[45] lucky 13! I drove by state college at about 10pm last night btw. If it was earlier I would have hit the Wegmans but I didn't want to get too tired on the way in to Pittsburgh.
[48] oh yeah your bessemer gig - good luck - everytime i think of bessemer i laugh- cause i worked at the galleria for a year or 2 while in undergrad and all the customers from bessemer had this really weird haircut and they all mumbled
and yeah i like leiber too - seems like a nice guy
[49] Wegman's! that's sooo awesome. one of my best friends from PSU, called yesterday - he and his wife are having their first baby! : )
were you on Route 80? wasn't it Exit 13??? ooh, maybe it was 14, with Lamar before it. nope, i'm outta my mind. Lamar was like Exit 24, or something and it said "Next Exit 13 miles", which was always a buzzkill.
Sheetz!!!
[50] i never heard of Bessemer til last week. i'll just think of it as B'ham! : )
i've got a good buddy in Mobile - who's a HUGE Philly's fan - he sees Lieber at minor league games. he just walks around with his family and seems very nice!
[52] All my friends are reproducing. It has a kind of strange affect on life.
Sheetz!! You are using the old exit numbers which I don't remember so well anymore. They are all mile markers now. I think Lamer is 184 or something. Actually, I came across on 220 so I really was close. I wound up taking the new leg of I-99 which I'm not happy about. But I was tired. I just hate that they put that road on that ridge.
[56] I know everything is magnified in a losing streak, but I keep waiting for someone to get that one extra hit to blow open a game or create a big inning, but it never seems to come.
Hopefully the Score Truck returns from the shop soon.
[57] No doubt about it. I'm in a profession where people tend to get married and, especially, have kids late. It has been weird seeing all of my friends and colleagues suddenly turning into family types.
[55] i just hope he wasn't on a bridge, in anticipation...
[57] yeah man, i feel like i'm the ONLY one of my friends w/out a girl and kids. pretty much sucks... : (
oh, okay - they changed most of the highway exit #'s here, also - using mile markers. i used to live off 220 when i was student teaching in Montoursville. i'm somewhat familiar w/ I-99, and can definitely place exactly where you were driving last night!
i had a long, late drive too last night, after the gig. it was tough w/ the weather and construction, not to mention deer and idiot drunk drivers...
[60] yup! i've played the Flori-Bama area a bunch. not sure about the exact place, though i've seen it and passed it plenty. but i've played in that general vicinity a few times over the years...
This team is a paper tiger. Cashman did a good job not trading prospects at the deadline and he would be wise to make developing Hughes and Joba an A1 priority over winning games.
It’s rather befuddling, I’ve been watching baseball since 76 and I’ve never understood how can a team look so good for most of the season and look like a minor league team against the Red Sox, White and Angels?
[102] the befuddling part to me is not so much the competition - just the wild, wild swings in plays. every team has some crapfests, but they have sustained crapfests, which shouldn't happen to a team that can also look so great.
I'm not too worried so long as these blurps of bad play are held to a few games each time through. This time plays better than it should most of the time and not as good as it should for these little stints. My big worry would be if a bad set of games arrives during the playoffs.
[107] I don't mind that the team can be streaky. What is bothersome is that when they implode, it's always because the pitching falters. Slumps happen, but a championship team really can't have its pitching staff completely go off kilter. Against Boston, Anaheim and now the Sox, the offense has scored enough to win. In fact, it has frequently jumped out to big leads. The problem is the pitchers can't hold them (I am not asking for shutouts, just quality starts). Sabathia, in particular, has really been very disappointing, but Joba, Andy and Burnett have all blown big leads. What that tells me is this is not the kind of staff that will win in the playoffs.
[118] You know I would do that, for ulterior motives. But what I meant was that both "aces" look bad today, and will not go deep into the game. This looks like one of those 'the team that scores last wins" games. With the recent BP troubles (and starter troubles), the Yankees could use SOMEONE to step up and shut down the opposition.
[121] yeah as much as there is concern about the hitting with risp, and they definitely did not take advantage of scoring opportunities in many of these games, it has fallen on the pitching
i'm really NOT looking forward to FOUR games against the Shit Sox.
if i heard this correctly, Hawk just said that Latin players cannot bat 2nd in the lineup and won't ever have a 2-0 count, b/c they don't understand what it means to bat 2nd... um, okay.
[128] Boston should be winning big against Baltimore...they are coming off a series where they should have lost 3 of 4 to Oakland at home, but stole a game because Jack Cust has no business playing the outfield. They aren't exactly playing great baseball either.
The sad thing is this Yankee team should be much better than Boston, but their pitchers just seem to lack something in some higher intensity games. The price was way to high, but the Yankees really did need Halladay.
[130] I imagine this is a variation of the ol' "can't walk off the island" stereotype, that Latin players tend to be less patient, more free swingers, etc.
[131] he's back on it now! he's backtracking - and praising Omar Vizquel. apparently, it's only YOUNG latin players who can't bat 2nd. Hawk is a fucking moron. i think i might hate him more that Morgan, Phillips and T-Mac.
[134] Alfredo Griffin, who was from the DR, actually said that, so I don't think it WAS as much a stereotype as a reality....scouts weren't looking for guys with great eyes, but instead hitters that displayed impressive offensive talents.
[139] It would be interesting to see if that stereotype/reality still stands up (or ever stood up), by looking at P/AB or something. Certainly Cano and Soriano are not the most patient hitters, but then there are plenty of non-Latino hackers.
[151] I don't think it stands up as much because the saturation in countries like the DR is significant, so I'd imagine scouts are really mining the talent. Also, I'd imagine the value of a good eye has also increased...and, even if it hasn't, the Moneyball myths probably have convinced people that it has.
Not because he has 50 hits, but Hairston actually looks like a solid pickup because of his versatility and defense. His presence should mean Cody Ransom never plays. Then again...
I gotta say, I'm getting fed up with CC's non-dominance. Yeah, I guess you could say it's the money.
On the other hand I'm stoked about Melky doing well - esp. cause I called it (optimistically, I'll admit), and I like the way Hairston goes about his business, thus far.
[166] Ah, you sell short the genius of Theo Epstein. From the bench he can best be utilized for his keen knowledge of the game, leadership, and all around captainness. He's really a modern player-coach out there.
my pop just forwarded me an email with a dozen "quotes from athletes". i had seen a coupla of 'em before, but holy shit, it is soooo freaking hysterical. i haven't laughed that hard in ages. total belly laughs, loss of breath, tears in the eyes funny. that was awesome!!!
Today must be "National Pitchers Suck" day.
And this from Pete Abe.
Robbie Cano without runners in scoring position: 101 of 288 (.351)
Robbie Cano with runners in scoring position: 26 of 128 (.203).
[189] these are the 2 i think i've seen before. still, they're hilarious!!!
7. Bill Peterson, a Florida State football coach: "You guys line up alphabetically by height." And, "You guys pair up in groups of three, and then line up in a circle."
11. Chuck Nevitt , North Carolina State basketball player, explaining to Coach Jim Valvano why he appeared nervous at practice: "My sister's expecting a baby, and I don't know if I'm going to be an uncle or an aunt." (I wonder if his IQ ever hit room temperature).
[199] It's definitely frustrating and not hitting with RISP can often become the chief lament for this team, but the reality is they still always wind up finding away to score more than enough runs. This game now becomes about CC being able to give the Yankees at least 7 innings with only 4 runs.
1. Chicago Cubs outfielder Andre Dawson on being a role model: "I want all the kids to do what I do, to look up to me. I want all the kids to copulate me."
2. New Orleans Saints RB George Rogers when asked about the upcoming season: "I want to rush for 1,000 or 1,500 yards, whichever comes first."
3. And, upon hearing Joe Jacobi of the 'Skins say: "I'd run over my own mother to win the Super Bowl," Matt Millen of the Raiders said: "To win, I'd run over Joe's Mom, too."
4. Torrin Polk, University of Houston receiver, on his coach, John Jenkins: "He treats us like men." He lets us wear earrings."
5. Football commentator and former player Joe Theismann, 1996: "Nobody in football should be called a genius. A genius is a guy like Norman Einstein."
6. Senior basketball player at the University of Pittsburgh : "I'm going to graduate on time, no matter how long it takes." (now that is beautiful)
[206] This sounds like Yogi Berra: "6. Senior basketball player at the University of Pittsburgh : “I’m going to graduate on time, no matter how long it takes.” (now that is beautiful)"
Sorry monkeypants...accroding to Kay, Girardi insisted Hughes wont go the rotation. Apparently, the Yankees aren't trying to actually win this season. Unfortunately, they're also not trying to develop Hughes. I am not really sure what they are doing then.
[213] I am not sure why Girardi would insist Hughes is staying in the pen because it has no strategic advantage. In fact, the Yankees should probably pretend he is going to the rotation because it might make teams less apt to hold them up for a starter.
[217] i hope he doesn't end up in the HoF with a Ford C. Frick award, or some shit. it seems like they just put in any ol' broadcaster every year, just b/c they've been around for ages. kinda bollocks...
[219] It depends on their long-term plans. If they had, for example, plans to extend Hughes, I would like to see him come in the game now. If not, the BP has been taxed a bit lately, so I would try to get CC through this inning, even if it means gambling a bit.
Since, according to William according to Kay according to Girardi, Hughes will not leave the BP this season, keep CC in there.
8. Boxing promoter Dan Duva on Mike Tyson going to prison: "Why would anyone expect him to come out smarter? He went to prison for three years, not Princeton ."
9. Stu Grimson, Chicago Blackhawk's left wing, explaining why he keeps a color photo of himself above his locker: "That's so when I forget how to spell my name, I can still find my clothes."
10. Lou Duva, veteran boxing trainer, on the Spartan training regime of heavyweight Andrew Golota: "He's a guy who gets up at six o'clock in the morning, regardless of what time it is."
12. Frank Layden , Utah Jazz president, on a former player: "I told him, 'Son, what is it with you? Is it ignorance or apathy?' He said, "Coach, I don't know and I don't care."
[230] It depends on plans for the ninth. If I sent out Hughes, I would keep him in for both innings (no need to waste Mo on a silly three run "save"); then he could be rested on the off day and be back on Tuesday or perhaps Wednesday. If the plan is to use Mo for the "save" in the ninth, I would try to use a different pitcher in the eighth, whether CC or someone else (is anyone available?).
boston pitching has already given up 9 runs today. of course, their sluggish offense has scored 15 freaking times, so they'll win. but NINE runs is a lot to give up...
Apparently, Melvin Mora is upset about his reduced playing time. Below is a quote expressing as much. The best part is that Mora apparently thinks that Pedro Martinez still pitches for Boston.
***
Mora insisted the benching wasn’t as maddening as the reason he was given for the move.
“Don’t give me the excuse that I cannot beat John Smoltz(notes), that I cannot beat Josh Beckett(notes) or I cannot beat (Jon) Lester or I cannot beat Pedro Martinez(notes) or I cannot beat nobody here, because I’ve been here for nine years,” he said. “I’ve been here for nine years and all those guys in the East, they know me. You don’t make the All-Star team for nothing. You deserve respect.”
[248] and Adam Lind is our other one! Zobrist, was profiled in this week's Baseball Weekly paper. his wife is a professional Christian singer and he's a big reader. by all accounts, he seems to be a good guy!
[253] Lind is not *that* much of a mystery, if you look at his MiL numbers and his career progression. He was a fine prospect who got off to a slow start at MLB, and is now (at age 25) coming into his prime.
This is really incredible. I love Mo more than life itself, but if Hughes is so valuable as the "8th inning guy", then why on Earth doesn't Girardi let him finish the damn eigth inning? That makes absolutely no sense. This is panick managing, which is at the root of many of the Yankees problems.
It's moves like this that really expose Girardi and really make me pessimistic about this team's chances of making a run.
He's not really going to Rivera here, is here? I mean, usually I like the idea of pushing the closer for more than one inning. But why burn Hughes here for one or two batters?
I am rapidly losing what little inclination I may have to defend Girardi.
As soon as I saw Rivera trotting in, I had a bad feeling. I hate when a pitcher is doing the job and the manager yanks him. I really don't get why that had to happen. I bet CC is thrilled.
[269] Not at all. I simply think that pitchers--especially valuable pitchers--should be used for as long as practical. If Hughes is to be the superdy-duperdy-lock-down-relief guy, then let him throw more than 12 pitches. Let him finish the inning. In fact, try to let him finish the fucking game. At worst, you still have Mo in reserve should he falter in the ninth. Finally, pushing Hughes makes extra good sense given that tomorrow is an off-day.
[277] I would also add, the BP has been pressed the last two days. That's why it made sense to roll the dice and gamble with CC after he stumbled. Maybe today is a good day NOT to burn through the few rested pitchers.
[278] Yeah, I admit it, he is really pissing me off of late. I still think he is miles better than Torre (and look at Torre's BP use and lineups this year--yikes). But Girardi's managing has been a mess.
Very predicatable AB, especially for Posada who has never been a good pinch hitter.
Once again, this is exactly the kind of managing that loses playoff games...and also the kind of managing that prevents you from even making it.
In all seriousness, aside from the big names like Halladay, the deadline move that the Yankees could have made that would have boosted their chances the most would have been to fire Girardi.
[316] There's a real Catch 22 at work with the manager. If they do well, we're stuck with him, but who wants the team to do poorly enough for him to get canned? I really feel like the team will succeed - if it does - in spite of him.
I really have no interest in figuring out how much my feeling on the subject is quasi-personal animus or objectively definable shortcomings of Girardi. It may be impossible to measure.
[321] Of course not. He should have left Hairston in the game. I would have gone with a squeeze, but they'd be better off even letting him swing away. Then, you can have Posada hit for Molina if you don't get the run in. Instead, he burned Matsui, put Po in a bad position and weakened his defense significantly at 2 key positions. All of those risks outweigh the benefits.
[323] It is definitely a Catch-22 and I understand that you can't fire a manager when your team is in first place. Regardless, I'd like to think Cashman notices Girardi's shortcomings.
Bobby V, said he's definitely not staying in Japan. Buck Showalter's available. how 'bout Wally Backman. (i'm kidding...though he is a good "baseball guy" and knows NY)
let's split toronto (halladay and all), and do the same - minimum w/ boston. man oh man, what i wouldn't do to sweep those fucking scumbag assfuck shithooks!!!
well there is one more thing, picking up from randy's post from an earlier thread:
DO NOT PICK UP SNACKS PONTOON!
[1] I dunno. If the alternative is Mitre or Igawa, I might be willing to give him a shot.
[2] On the one hand, Ponson is truly awful and signing him might kill Mattpat.
On the other hand, his ERA of slightly more than 7.00 would make him the second best starter to be used in the Wang/#5 spot this season.
Ponson? Is it even being CONSIDERED? Please say no.
That would be going to the whale once too often.
I see from the lineup that Pete Abe posted that yesterday's Hairston-Ransom duo is being followed up today with Hairston-Molina.
[4] Maybe even thrice too often!
[5] stop your complaining - it is trending upward :}
[8] yeah yesterday really was tough to take all around.
my silver lining is the big man is due for a big game and all those perfect innings have worn burehle down. yeah, that's what i'm going with for now.
Adding to the gloom, did anyone else see the bad news about Montero?
So, Jeter will never take another pitch to start the game?
so far, so perfect
[10] yeah i saw that too. hopefully a broken middle finger is not something that remains a long-term issue. the lost development time sure suck though.
at least jh jr is off to a nice start in pinstripes
we really made buehrle work hard to start the game!
yeah, first thing i saw - baseball wise - today, was Pontoon being DFA'ed. i'm sure Cashman is salivating and Mattpat and is contemplating what building to jump off...
hey, any mechanics on this board? i think we need someone to look under the hood of our score truck - something is amiss.
nice catch, Melkowitz!
a scoreless 1st inning for the cws - we can build on this!!
[14] The problem, I think, is that they let the WSox borrow the score truck, and those guys drove the hell out of it the last few days.
that's a ringing line drive in the box score!
okay, mk " a lot" sorta implies more than 1 - give us another example besides joba
that is fucking BEAUTIFUL!!!
some Yanks fans in ChiTown too. me likey!!!
LECHE!!!
melky was hiding the keys to the god damn score truck - yeah!!!
nice shot for melky!!! how goes it folks?
how many e-6's is this guy going to make this weekend?
[22] hey man! i wasn't around yesterday, when i think Danks pitched. did you have that store in P'burgh? we had a Danks dep't store on the corner of Allen & Beaver, downtown State College. i got 3 of my earrings pierced there...
hopefully, our defense is contagious and switched dugouts today!
[22] hi seamus - well today pretty good - thus-sat has been the bronx brutal
Scored a hit for Hairston.
[23] as many times as he walks with the bases loaded?
Send Hairston? Is he fast?
[26] hometown call, i guess. wasn't scorched, so should be an error.
Jeter gets a pretty damn good cheer from the crowd. plus, there's a hot blonde behind home plate, off to the right! : )
[27] oh god yes - if nix did nothing else this weekend - man that was awful -
stfu mk - if the yanks brought bob costas in and paid him more than you, you would be pissed too and want to re-do your contract
[31] who was he talking about?
Definitely send Hairston now, with two strikes on Jeter.
[24] i've heard of danks but never experienced it myself. Not aware of one around here but i'm a transplant so could have been before my time.
damnit. and shit sox are already up 6-0 in the 2nd. crappity crap!!!
Holy cow. Lotta leather being flashed today.
[25] yeah I saw that. Kind of glad I was off on the road with my mom. I did catch some of the game on Friday in the hotel room.
[32] basically saying that buerhle can't be upset about being paid less than peavy
what time warp are we in that jermaine dye is making ctaches likes these?
[34] yeah, they got gone many years ago. this was early 90's. they were already gone by mid-90's. small-ish dep't store... how long have you been in P'burgh? yins like it? originally a new yorker, like many of us?
[38] i have a feeling that the Peavy deal is NOT gonna go so well for them. he's another 'Bama boy for you, though! : )
jesus christ. another leadoff double...
[39] i'm originally a jersey boy. I've been in Pittsburgh for four years. But I've been in western PA for 13 years. Pittsburgh/State College being the closest "cities."
make that 7-0 for the shit sox. some dude named Reddick, i've never heard of, just homered. of course he did...
[40] yeah mobile - i don't know why, but he seems kind of like a tool though.
what happened to cc's impeccable command? - he is missing high a fair amount.
ok. I was like wow, Ransom! Before I remembered it was Hairston.
[41] oh cool. i think i knew about the joisey part. i'm here in Atlanta 13 years now. last week was *exactly* 13 years. whew, looooong time...
[43] not that there aren't a ton of tools in bama - just that jimmy key wasn't
[43] ah, Jon Lieber territory. leibs is NOT a tool, however. i liked that guy...
[46] i'll be in B'ham-Bessemer next Saturday. i wasn't too very far, i guess, last night - played in Columbus, GA...
[50] weird harcuits and mumbling. And I've never been to Bessemer! who'd a think it!
Lamar was like Exit 24, or something and it said "Next Exit 13 miles", which was always a buzzkill.

i've got a good buddy in Mobile - who's a HUGE Philly's fan - he sees Lieber at minor league games. he just walks around with his family and seems very nice!
damn. I thought that was fair off the bat. Shows what i know.
meanwhile, our "Lucky 13" is in a major slumpy slump...
i really want to know where mattpat was when he heard the snacks pontoon news
ah team - need to keep the score truck going - no putting it back in the garage
[52] All my friends are reproducing. It has a kind of strange affect on life.
Sheetz!! You are using the old exit numbers which I don't remember so well anymore. They are all mile markers now. I think Lamer is 184 or something. Actually, I came across on 220 so I really was close. I wound up taking the new leg of I-99 which I'm not happy about. But I was tired. I just hate that they put that road on that ridge.
[55] my god I had to go to lohud to check and make sure we didn't sign him. scary post you made there!
[56] I know everything is magnified in a losing streak, but I keep waiting for someone to get that one extra hit to blow open a game or create a big inning, but it never seems to come.
Hopefully the Score Truck returns from the shop soon.
thelarmis, you ever been to the Flora Bama?
[57] No doubt about it. I'm in a profession where people tend to get married and, especially, have kids late. It has been weird seeing all of my friends and colleagues suddenly turning into family types.
[58] ah sorry - not THAT news (yet)
[55] i just hope he wasn't on a bridge, in anticipation...
[57] yeah man, i feel like i'm the ONLY one of my friends w/out a girl and kids. pretty much sucks... : (
oh, okay - they changed most of the highway exit #'s here, also - using mile markers. i used to live off 220 when i was student teaching in Montoursville. i'm somewhat familiar w/ I-99, and can definitely place exactly where you were driving last night!
i had a long, late drive too last night, after the gig. it was tough w/ the weather and construction, not to mention deer and idiot drunk drivers...
why is Pods hitting CC soooo far???
[61] Yep. No single buds to go out with. Hanging with the rest requires planning. bah to planning!
[60] yup! i've played the Flori-Bama area a bunch. not sure about the exact place, though i've seen it and passed it plenty. but i've played in that general vicinity a few times over the years...
Screw that kid.
[63] i wonder if cc has a slight mechanical hitch or is tired - because he is leaving a lot of pitches up the last few starts
[63] Glad you got back ok. Those are the main things that worry me about late drives like that. Drunks and deer. Sometimes the combo.
I haven't figured out the single thing yet (divorced last year). I can't help that more single buds would help.
[64] well, i'm actually good at planning. and i adore kids. and i REALLY love girls. i just don't seem to get to do any of the above... : /
shouldn't the Pale Hose's Score Truck be outta gas by now???
[67] I hope it isn't tired. tired is bad.
shit
oh crap CC. He has been so pedestrian lately.
fuck this goddamn bullshit.
and somebody please shoot Hawk straight in the face... : /
Di-CC-appointing. FUCK.
Christ on a crutch.
unreal
CC needs to be rested as much, if not more, than Joba. The abuse points have caught up with him.
our team needs a week off.
Well, can't blame Posada for this.
[68] the weather and construction didn't help, either. 30 miles sandwiched between giant cement walls. not fun.
sorry about the divorce, bro. it's brutal. women are evil. ('cept, of course for Ms. October!!!!)
oh, christ. back-to-back?! wtf????
This got ugly quick.
[77] completely agree - he just doesn't have anything extra on his pitches and leaving a ton up
This team is a paper tiger. Cashman did a good job not trading prospects at the deadline and he would be wise to make developing Hughes and Joba an A1 priority over winning games.
well, here's some more bad news everyone...
Cult just texted me this:
"Montero out for the season. Marshall with TJ surgery."
i don't know the Montero injury or who Marshall is, but it's not good...
well hot damn - nice throw jd
oh, i guess Pete Abe already posted that news. i hadn't been over there yet...
[78] Our team is in the process of taking a week off.
Montero has a broken finger. Marshall was a big time Texas high school overslot draftee.
thank you quentin for that!
[80] thanks man. It was for the best. And yep, Ms October rocks!
[84] Montero broke a finger. He's out 4-6 weeks, which is past the end of the minor league season.
Brett Marshall is one of our minor leaguers. RHP.
holy shit - Oreo's came scorching back and scored 6 in 1 frame! that Reddick homer is the difference. 7-6...
thank the lord for melky today
nice work Melky!
we MUST at least tie it here...
at least melky showed up!
Bunt?
Squeeze?
This has become a major gut check game.
[95] got your wish/prediction
doesn't see like 1 run is going to make the difference in this one though
looks like Hairston might be a good pickup. prolly better if Ransom gets gone...
tie game!!! : )
the tie!!!
[95] Yes.
[96] No!!
It’s rather befuddling, I’ve been watching baseball since 76 and I’ve never understood how can a team look so good for most of the season and look like a minor league team against the Red Sox, White and Angels?
I was going to do the hockey reference and Kay beat me to it. I’m ashamed on multiple levels.
Captain Hit Machine
[102] You can't predict baseball, Suzyn.
TIme to use the restroom. : / Man on second.
[102] the befuddling part to me is not so much the competition - just the wild, wild swings in plays. every team has some crapfests, but they have sustained crapfests, which shouldn't happen to a team that can also look so great.
shit sox threatening yet again...
c'mon Johnny!!!
[102] It has been bizarre. We'll see how things look after the next RSox series.
woo hoo speedy Molina!
molina scored from 2nd!!! omg i'm scared
HA!!! molina running home is funny!!!
[106] Reverse Jinx. Works every time. : O
Score Truck!
This may a day where Hughes comes up big shutting things down, if CC can keep it together for one or two more innings.
I fear Melky will soon look like Molina if he's not careful. lol
I'm not too worried so long as these blurps of bad play are held to a few games each time through. This time plays better than it should most of the time and not as good as it should for these little stints. My big worry would be if a bad set of games arrives during the playoffs.
[115] if i'm not totally paying attention, there are times when melky bats rh that i think it is molina
[114] Hughes for three IP?
Mark vs. Mark.
Buehrle won...
...but the Score Truck is run off the road by the inevitable DP.
[117] every time Melky bats lefty, i think he's boBBy abreu with his #53
shit sox blowing it open...again. : /
We almost definitely see him for two.
need to put up a 0 here big man
[117,122] I think his Score truck is more of a Donut truck.
[121] yeah as much as there is concern about the hitting with risp, and they definitely did not take advantage of scoring opportunities in many of these games, it has fallen on the pitching
(121) agreed and Red Sox are winning big again
nice work big man
i'm really NOT looking forward to FOUR games against the Shit Sox.
if i heard this correctly, Hawk just said that Latin players cannot bat 2nd in the lineup and won't ever have a 2-0 count, b/c they don't understand what it means to bat 2nd... um, okay.
[130] what?
[128] Boston should be winning big against Baltimore...they are coming off a series where they should have lost 3 of 4 to Oakland at home, but stole a game because Jack Cust has no business playing the outfield. They aren't exactly playing great baseball either.
The sad thing is this Yankee team should be much better than Boston, but their pitchers just seem to lack something in some higher intensity games. The price was way to high, but the Yankees really did need Halladay.
the 5.5 hole!
[132] I thought Boston "should have" swept Oakalnd b/c they are one of the worst teams in the league.
: D
A bit hit here wouldn't suck.
bit = big
[134] Alfredo Griffin, who was from the DR, actually said that, so I don't think it WAS as much a stereotype as a reality....scouts weren't looking for guys with great eyes, but instead hitters that displayed impressive offensive talents.
boston answered the O's 6 runs, with 6 runs of their own, immediately. they've scored in every frame. 13-6 and counting...
[134] yeah, pretty much.
Restroom time.
[135] hawk is by far the worst.
[134] sounds like it. that ass gives actual hawks a bad name.
YES!!!
bobby melky is my hero!
Melky = the man
Melky owns the score truck! You can't walk off the island...but you drive!!
Good read by A-Rod on that one. He was off with the crack of the bat.
14-6...
i knew we'd get to buehrle. god, i hate spelling that guys name!
[147] Alex is usually a terrific baserunner.
[136] Absolutely...that was my point.
[139] It would be interesting to see if that stereotype/reality still stands up (or ever stood up), by looking at P/AB or something. Certainly Cano and Soriano are not the most patient hitters, but then there are plenty of non-Latino hackers.
[151] i know minaya acquired him, but i'm pretty sure francouer ain't latino :}
i think just fair was right - melky turned the score truck into a donut truck, but decided to restore its original intent
V. Martinez has 3 hits and 3 RBIs.
But the Sox pitching has given up 6 runs :)
cashman = genius
[151] I don't think it stands up as much because the saturation in countries like the DR is significant, so I'd imagine scouts are really mining the talent. Also, I'd imagine the value of a good eye has also increased...and, even if it hasn't, the Moneyball myths probably have convinced people that it has.
hairston the hit machine!
jh jr is making the most of this pt
In a small sample, Hairston > Ransom.
Not because he has 50 hits, but Hairston actually looks like a solid pickup because of his versatility and defense. His presence should mean Cody Ransom never plays. Then again...
[153] Not surprising. V. Martinez is a professional hitter.
[160] Not surprising...the Orioles' pitchers in this game all suck!
Jeter getting some nice cheers from the chicago crowd!
(160) So is Hairston Jr. I see
[159] But who would back-up 1B against LHP?
That's a good K by Molina because the chances of a DP were high. That makes Molina a professional hitter in my book.
i think it is hilarious that boston's captain sits on the bench.
Come Jeter, let's blow this open with a two out hit.
damn! motherfucker. soooo close!!!!
I gotta say, I'm getting fed up with CC's non-dominance. Yeah, I guess you could say it's the money.
On the other hand I'm stoked about Melky doing well - esp. cause I called it (optimistically, I'll admit), and I like the way Hairston goes about his business, thus far.
damn you jermaine day - i thought your fielding sucked
You ain't playing in NYS today, Mr. Jeter!
all the starters have hits for us. I like that. I also am fond of stating the obvious.
[169] your screen name is unfortunate for this series!!! ; )
[166] Ah, you sell short the genius of Theo Epstein. From the bench he can best be utilized for his keen knowledge of the game, leadership, and all around captainness. He's really a modern player-coach out there.
Man, the ball is really carrying today. I figure the wind knocked DOWN about 4 possible homers yesterday.
wow. that was CLOSE!!!
nice play Robbie.
[175] New Comiskey (or whatever it's called) is playing as a pretty severe hitters park this year (PF 105, if I recall).
[174] Plus he keeps his mask on so he simulate mound conferences.
our infield took care of the inning rather nicely.
Nice quick inning. Can they squeeze 7 out of CC?
[179] and fights
[182] Well that goes without saying. ; D
[174] Very good point. I was a fool to underestimate him
[179] haha. [182] hahahahahaha.
my pop just forwarded me an email with a dozen "quotes from athletes". i had seen a coupla of 'em before, but holy shit, it is soooo freaking hysterical. i haven't laughed that hard in ages. total belly laughs, loss of breath, tears in the eyes funny. that was awesome!!!
and the Baltimore Ravens cut the Patriots lead to a touchdown. 14-7
20 pitches. 14 for balls? hahaha
we really need to capitalize on this in a BIG Score Truck kinda way!!!
but, uh-oh, it's Robbie with ducks...
[185] What's the best one?
Today must be "National Pitchers Suck" day.
And this from Pete Abe.
Robbie Cano without runners in scoring position: 101 of 288 (.351)
Robbie Cano with runners in scoring position: 26 of 128 (.203).
if it was higher than high for robbie's liking he shouldn't have swung
Come on Melky...bases-clearing triple time.
time for that triple melky
damn you, robbie!!!
[189] these are the 2 i think i've seen before. still, they're hilarious!!!
7. Bill Peterson, a Florida State football coach: "You guys line up alphabetically by height." And, "You guys pair up in groups of three, and then line up in a circle."
11. Chuck Nevitt , North Carolina State basketball player, explaining to Coach Jim Valvano why he appeared nervous at practice: "My sister's expecting a baby, and I don't know if I'm going to be an uncle or an aunt." (I wonder if his IQ ever hit room temperature).
bollocks.
boooooooooooo
If Cano isn't going to succeed with the bases loaded in that spot, then when? Had he hit the ball just like Melky did, the Yanks would have run.
[195] Hey, you can't spell bollocks withouth b,o,o. : D
Kind of scary, Yanks missing all these chances to score runs.
[198] i originally spelled it "boolocks", but it was an accidental typo. i shoulda kept it! ; )
nice hook, big man!
[199] It's definitely frustrating and not hitting with RISP can often become the chief lament for this team, but the reality is they still always wind up finding away to score more than enough runs. This game now becomes about CC being able to give the Yankees at least 7 innings with only 4 runs.
If Vmart is a professional hitter, Hairston is definitely a surehanded defender.
[202] Yep. You'd like to think that seven runs is enough when your ace is on the mound.
[202] From my expert analysis, Cano should have broken Hack Wilson's RBI record by now. : )
KC is up 2-0 on the Rays.
Man it would have been nice to get Bannister, I guess KC was asking to much for him.
[207] That would have been an ideal pickup, but alas.
[209] I'm not responding.
[207] he's only owed like $650K.
this girl cannot sing!!!
[209] i hope that means bubba crosby is our cf
[206] Number #3 is hysterical.
boston is about to add another 14,005 runs, as if their score truck hasn't been busy enough... : /
[207] i have a feeling that cursed it and the Rays will now win. OYF did that the other week, like 3 days in a row... : /
couldn't hawk have suffered a broadcast career ending injury while trying to throw that shirt
[213] I am not sure why Girardi would insist Hughes is staying in the pen because it has no strategic advantage. In fact, the Yankees should probably pretend he is going to the rotation because it might make teams less apt to hold them up for a starter.
leadoff triple. bullshit!!! i really want CC to go 7. might not happen...
Phil-Mo
Soria in for the 6-out save. Neyer would be pleased. 5 outs to go...
See, Melky. Piece if cake.
I hate to say this, but C.C. really doesn't look like an ace most of the time.
[217] i hope he doesn't end up in the HoF with a Ford C. Frick award, or some shit. it seems like they just put in any ol' broadcaster every year, just b/c they've been around for ages. kinda bollocks...
soria's outta the 8th!
boston has 15 runs. bases loaded, no out, Fat Liar at the dish...
[221] He looks more like The Ace of Cakes!
: )
[219] It depends on their long-term plans. If they had, for example, plans to extend Hughes, I would like to see him come in the game now. If not, the BP has been taxed a bit lately, so I would try to get CC through this inning, even if it means gambling a bit.
Since, according to William according to Kay according to Girardi, Hughes will not leave the BP this season, keep CC in there.
(216) oh sorry about that.
I'll get my Rays doll out and stick very large pins in it.
as nutty as ozzie is, i'm pretty sure he would ph for ransom and hence whatever shitty hitter the white sox have up, pershithead may well ph for
CC survived this one. Now to close the door...
Was C.C. talking shit after that bunt or what? He was doing a lot of chirping. Any lip readers out there.
GREAT job, very large man!!! should we send him out to start the 8th against the heart of the order or send in a fresh Phil?
2 outs for shit sox...
[229] He was ordering a Subway Sanwich...
: )
Sterling just claimed that Ozzie is "going pitcher by pitcher, inning by inning, trying to save his BP"? Does that make any sense?
+d ^
[331] lol. I think he was pissed at Podshithead for trying to get a cheap run.
[232] Only to Suzyn Waldman...
: )
Royales have added a 3rd run
[230] It depends on plans for the ninth. If I sent out Hughes, I would keep him in for both innings (no need to waste Mo on a silly three run "save"); then he could be rested on the off day and be back on Tuesday or perhaps Wednesday. If the plan is to use Mo for the "save" in the ninth, I would try to use a different pitcher in the eighth, whether CC or someone else (is anyone available?).
(237) My voodoo doll is working!!
[239] yes, thank you for that! : )
"Go-go" Teixeira!
how does ben zobrist have 19 homeruns?! Soria shut 'em down, though. 4-1, Rays lose...
[242] He's got half of 'em off the Yankees!
: )
another freaking leadoff double. feh!
here's the Phranchise!
it wasn't pretty - but 4 runnings in 7 innings after that 3rd inning is pretty good
boston pitching has already given up 9 runs today. of course, their sluggish offense has scored 15 freaking times, so they'll win. but NINE runs is a lot to give up...
[242] thelarmis zobrist will be the great mystery for you and me this season
[246] 10 hits, 5 K's, 0 BB's, 100 pitches, 7+
not bad! and the 2 longballs, were against Dye & Thome in a hitter's park. CC did pretty good!
[246] Pretty good for many, but not for an "ace". C.C. was very disappointing and doesn't inspire much confidence heading into the Boston series.
[249] that's hilarious - how does he know smoltzie is there - but pedro who has been gone since 2005 is not?!?
[248] and Adam Lind is our other one! Zobrist, was profiled in this week's Baseball Weekly paper. his wife is a professional Christian singer and he's a big reader. by all accounts, he seems to be a good guy!
[252] he was prolly remembering his own years w/ the Muts and facing smoltzie in hotlanta. and it's been really hot & humid here...
[252] Obviously, that is what you get from a guy with six kids under ten...
: )
[252] With quintuplets running around, Mora is lucky if he remembers to leave the house wearing pants.
[253] Lind is not *that* much of a mystery, if you look at his MiL numbers and his career progression. He was a fine prospect who got off to a slow start at MLB, and is now (at age 25) coming into his prime.
oof = Rolen got beaned in the helmet by Long Island's own Jason Marquis. he should be alright, but left his 2nd game w/ the Reds...
Mistake K. Wow.
[257] i actually had a feeling about that. what about Aaron Hill, who hit his 26th today? Jays have exploded to a 6-0 early lead...
Phranchise!!! one more, kid...
[253] yeah i actually kind of like zobrist - i just can't beleiev he is as good as his numbers indicate!
[255-256] oh i didn't realize mora had quintuplets
God coming in for 4 outs
Giradi's a @#$$$#. WTF!!!
[261] yup, and he had at least one other kid before the Instant-5 !!!
well, it's a good thing we didn't get Scott Downs, who's back on the DL. Jays have had an enormous amount of pitching injuries this season...
Should have left Hughes in.
[267] mp, coming over to the dark side...
[261] Not only quints, but they had their first not too long before...
In fact every time I see Melvin, I think of that guy on Total Recall with his "I got five kids to feed!"
: )
should the Yanks have YS2 inaugural patches on the sleeves and hats of ROAD uni's? seems excessive.
well, this isn't good. why didn't Phil phace quen'in, anyway?!
Again...panic managing at work.
How do I hate Girardi, let me count the ways.
really really dumb to lift hughes there.
let's just...WIN
Five runs now for C.C. That's not what you expect from an ace.
[277] No, I meant the:
I am rapidly losing what little inclination I may have to defend Girardi.
[277] I would also add, the BP has been pressed the last two days. That's why it made sense to roll the dice and gamble with CC after he stumbled. Maybe today is a good day NOT to burn through the few rested pitchers.
[277] Maybe Girardi wanted to save Hughes for tomorrow...
: )
robbie must've thought there were men on base...
season ending surgery for brandon webb...
[278] Yeah, I admit it, he is really pissing me off of late. I still think he is miles better than Torre (and look at Torre's BP use and lineups this year--yikes). But Girardi's managing has been a mess.
[280] isn't tomorrow Cokey's day to pitch?! ; )
[280] Haha...probably.
GO MELKY
LECHE!!!! CYCLE!!!!
CYCLE BABY
cycle melky!!!
[283] Heh heh!
CYCLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
hey good for you melky -
now let's get you in to score
william and I are proud parents today.
That's my Melky!
there's the Dye fielding we're all accustomed to seeing!
look how happy Robbie looked! : )
congrats, Melky!!!
Wow @ Melky's Cycle!
: O³
[292] Yep...our boy is growing up.
[292] hey me too! i admit i wavered but i never jumped off the melky bandwagon.
Thanks, Dye.
I don't think I've ever watched a game in which a Yankee did that.
[277] i agree. i had visions of Phil phinishing this game, myself...
let's go PO!!!
I forget what someone wins if a Yankee hits for the cycle. $10,000?
[282] Miles ahead of post Zimmer Torre isn't saying much, by the way.
I'll be damned.
[297] Hey the more the merrier! Hell we've all wavered.
Oh, this is why Ransom is on the team?!?!
This is just awful managing here. He creates a prime DP situation for Posada, severely weakens his defense at 3B and C and loses Matsui's bat.
Oreo's have put up a 10-spot on the shitty sox. too bad they need 15, in total, to tie...
no more hearing about tony fernandez every time a yankee gets a home run and triple/double!!!
[301] i'll take it! ; )
[308] Yes...RIP in Fernandez.
[308] has it really been that long? he was the last Yank to do it?! wow...
i love Cycles!!! : )
Actually, I'm most happy that Girardi found a way to get Ransom into the game. (Yeah, I know, PR makes sense, but still...).
christ as awful as po has looked the last few games just let the man rest
The old George would have had a bottle of Dom waiting in Melky's locker.
[310] You mean RISP Fernandez! Cano could learn a lot from watching footage of TF...
Heh heh!
JOhny Damon is on Deck, according to Sterling. So I guess Girardi is trying to make for yesterday's non-moves?
[311] nevermind. pete abe's got it up. man, it's been ages...
life was very different back in Sept of '95...
why in the hell does boston have to score more runs today? victor having himself a game... 5-6, 4 rbi. professional.
[317] damon has been in all game mp - not sure who has you more confuse sterling or girardi
cap'n clutch
[316] should he have let molina hit?
Jeter is sort of special.
Aren't Cycles more rare than Perfect Games? If so, take that Mark Buehrle, and in your house, too!
: )
i like that melky is sitting near mo to re-tell his cycle story
[321] Of course not. He should have left Hairston in the game. I would have gone with a squeeze, but they'd be better off even letting him swing away. Then, you can have Posada hit for Molina if you don't get the run in. Instead, he burned Matsui, put Po in a bad position and weakened his defense significantly at 2 key positions. All of those risks outweigh the benefits.
[319] Hahaha.
I'm an idiot.
so...there are TWO people who spell their name "Jhonny". jeesh.
ooh, that was kinda close...
[323] It is definitely a Catch-22 and I understand that you can't fire a manager when your team is in first place. Regardless, I'd like to think Cashman notices Girardi's shortcomings.
[327] And I'm only half-listening to game...lot's cooking and housework to do today.
Bobby V, said he's definitely not staying in Japan. Buck Showalter's available. how 'bout Wally Backman. (i'm kidding...though he is a good "baseball guy" and knows NY)
[330] lots of , not "lot's". He can do his own damned cooking.
Frenchy with another homerun for the Muts. he must like Shiti Field...
[330] it's definitely sterling and girardi's fault
Wow, Wikipedia is already updated. Are people on call to do this?
[324] According to Wikipedia, there have been 286 cycles.... they already have Melky's listed.
[335] You beat me to it Rich... of course, I'm trying to type while holding a baby...so, you have an advantage. ;-)
a walk? weird.
[337] Heh, excellent. :)
The last cycle before Fernandez was Bobby Murcher on 8/29/72. Bob Muesal hit 3. Wow.
18 runs for the shit sox. boo!!!
good win. see y'all later.
Good win. I guess the score truck fleet included a motor-"cycle" today... ;-)
Melky still doesn't speak English?
Yay!
Have a great rest of your weekend everyone!
finally...a win! wahoo!
let's split toronto (halladay and all), and do the same - minimum w/ boston. man oh man, what i wouldn't do to sweep those fucking scumbag assfuck shithooks!!!
[344] I've heard him speak it before, but it's very broken. He apparently understands it well.
[346] If the Yankees could beat Halladay it would wash away most of the film from this weekend.
[344] yeah he speaks a tiny bit - but i guess they knew these questions and answers would be a bit more involved than the very basic ones
Mo has 30 saves for the 7th straight season and 12th overall...
how do the Halos, all of a sudden, have the BEST offense in all of baseball?!
it's weird that the Cards have played SIX more games than the Cubs, at this point...
[351] Grit and determination.
[351] They've got CHOAD.
(351)They’ve played the Yanks
