Last night I was standing on a subway platform when a train whooshed into the station. I noticed that my car was almost empty before stepping inside. An empty car in the middle of the summer can mean one of two things: the AC is broken or someone smelly is inside (worse case scenerio brings both). Turns out the AC was busted. But I got in anyhow and enjoyed the space. The Russian Baths on the IRT, why not?
I’ve run into several mentally ill people on the trains lately. Last Friday night, on the Brooklyn-bound B train, a man walked through the car and said, “My man, my man, m-m-m-m-my man.” He held a cup in his hand and kept repeating these words in an insistent, almost pleading voice. I thought about the stuttering character in “Do The Right Thing.” The doors opened and closed but the dude didn’t get off the car. He just kept chanting. It was upsetting. A man sitting next to me looked up from his newspaper and muttered something derogatory about the guy. He’s a sick man, I thought.
Then on Saturday I saw a black woman standing on Broadway and 231st street. She was wearing powder blue shorts and a purple shirt. She had white facial hair under her nose and on her chin. She spoke with an English accent. “Would you kindly spare some change?”
I crossed the street and walked north. Sitting at the bottom of a flight of stairs was a wino I recognized from around the neighborhood. He looked like he could be fishing buddies with Thurman Munson and Dirt Tidrow.
“Hey, can you spare like $1,500?” he asked me.
I smiled and kept walking.
Joba on the hill tonight, weather permitting. Time to start another winning streak, don’t ya think?
Subway rides are very interesting, though the characters aren't limited to the subway. Met an anti-abortion activist on the #12 bus, who had a tendency to show pictures of aborted fetuses to try to get his point across. I'm sure the guy was swell, but that's not something you'd want to see at 8 in the morning... And I haven't had chicken cacciatore since.
When I lived in Unionport, I managed to run into a nut nicknamed "Earth Angel" more times than I care to admit on the 6 train.
Weird wonderful, and sometime dangerous characters we have living in this great city of ours.
That's funny...The subway rides are always interesting and that's what makes them so fun to ride on...yes, we have to be careful who we talk to and who we even "look at" "hey, what you look'n at" or they will hurt you with their eyes...
[0] I know EXACTLY the wino you're talking about Alex. I used to live on Godwin Terrace, every morning in the summer on my way to the 1 he'd ask me if I could spare "about $20,000" He actually has a few buddies he hangs out with by the bottom of the steps, its like the brain trust.
I could use an extra 20 grand. Or just 20 grand.
I'm looking forward to the day when our more morally self-righteous citizens decide they also want to live in a society that treats the mentally ill with the respect and dignity -- and health care -- they (like everyone else) deserve.
[0] Every time I see anything that has to do with stuttering, including Johnny Damon talking to the media, I think of Richard Pryor and his bit about the guy stuttering in Chinese at the Chinese restaurant. Clearly he scarred me for life!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SPsp2JQXckk
[1] [2] Odds are the person you look at on the bus or subway tastes like chicken...
: )
[0] i'd buy the picture of malcom and martin from smiley
hard to get clear what petey and his substitute are trying to say, but it seems mitre will still be in the rotation saturday and gaudin might pitch sunday - perhaps with joba being skipped
and maybe gardner will be back in two weeks
Little ice cream cone on a hot day!
it is quite a difference how he is just going straight to the rubber and not meandering around the mound anymore
[0] hells yeah. Let's garner a W tonight.
Screw hill and overbay and all those skippy bjays
nice work joba
Subway rides may be interesting, but they are seldom fun!!
Joba looks ON..
[4] It's amazing here how FEW mentally ill people you see on the streets or on the trains..I have never been able to find out why in a metropolitan area of 36 million people, you rarely see anyone like that, I wonder if the customs of the old days still apply in some "unofficial" way, keeping them locked up..Lots of homeless these days, though they still always take their shoes off and neatly place them outside their tent or cardboard box..some customs are unbreakable..
Go Go JEET!
Woohoo Tex!
this is a hit party
Wow, just minutes late and the Score Truck has already been by!
I lived in San Jose, California back in the early '70's. There was this little Mexican restaurant on 4th St. that had these chile verde burritos that had a mild green sauce with huge chunks of tender pork that were, uh, to die for. It was not a fancy place and was in a bad part of town, close to the rail yards, and there were a lot of strange characters around so I fit right in. I stopped at this place quite often, usually with a severe case of the munchies. This one particular day, after polishing off a few of these aforementioned burritos I was about to leave when this old bum/wino hobbled in and sat down at a table a short distance away. He wore an old threadbare green suit, he was gray and grizzled, had hair that was completely askew, and had the absolute most bloodshot eyes I had ever seen. So he's sitting at this table for a few minutes, at times mumbling, and then finally pulled out 3 $1 bills and laid them out very carefully on the table in front of him. He stared at that $3.00 for around 10 minutes and finally got up, went to the counter and ordered something, handed over his 3 bucks, got a little change back , and then came and sat back down to wait for his food. I felt extremely sorry for this guy. You could tell how agonizing it was for him to part with what was surely his last $3.00. He may have been trying to decide between something to eat and a bottle of Thunderbird. Anyway, being the tender-hearted fellow that I am, I had a little money and I decided I was going to give this guy $10. As I smoked in those days, I was going to have a Marlboro after my meal, my lighter was out in the car, so I thought I would ask him for a light and go from there. I walked over to his table and said, in what I thought was a friendly tone, " say, do ya have a light ?" He slowly looked up at me with those amazingly bloodshot eyes and after looking at me for a couple of seconds, screamed at me in an incredibly loud voice, at the top of his lungs, "NO!!!!!" I was stunned. (I was also stoned on pot). I'd had good intentions, but this wasn't going as I had envisioned. I'd give him the $10 bucks, he'd be very grateful, and I'd leave feeling good about doing something for this poor guy. Not the way it went. I slunk out of the place, with people looking at me disapprovingly for what appeared to be picking on this poor bum. I remember thinking as I left, boy, that guy sure blew an opportunity for a few easy bottles of wine. But as I think back, perhaps my approach was wrong and being the young kid that I was, he probably thought I was going to hassle him. Anyway, that's my brush with the mentally ill story for this thread. Ah, game time. Go Yanks!
[14] Maybe they gots the "red ass" from losing last night...
: )
Can't score 1 run like yesterday...boy does Alex seem to be guessing a lot lately (more than usual).
Three hits on the first five pitches. A-Rod put a stop to that, but still.
[18] thought that too about alex
need po to come through here
[18] Or maybe they can.
Apparently, Alex only gets the "red ass" during those times when his women spank him...
[19] No patience...bad approach.
I kid, I kid.
there we go po
crap he was out by a mile
Uh, that wasn't close.
Woohoo Jorge!
That's the first bad send by Thomson that I can remember. I am glad Tex didn't lay a cheap shot on Barajas there.
No score truck for you, Mark Teixera.
Can we have a talk with the 3rd base coach?
I would have to say that was a coaching error rather than bad base running.
[27] Thompson
that was Sojoesque
[27] I didn't see the play, but Sterling said he was out by a mile. i guess I don't mind sending him with two regardless, considering it's the first inning and two runs were already in. Then again, they were smacking the pitcher around...
Sounds like the Banter is unanimous: Thompson's fault.
[33] Oh, it was a country mile. I believe the ball had reached the cut-off as Teix rounded third.
its totally on Thompson, but yeah its honestly the first time I can remember him making an indefensible base running decision so I'll give him a mulligan. He's not Meachem out there or anything.
[33] A mile is kind...he was out by so much that Tex just pretty much stopped and allowed himself to be tagged. Like you, I don't mind it so much with two outs. Even though it wasn't close, any mishandle and he still scores.
[28] should have paid $2 for his bread
[31] you were right the first time, no p - i always have to look at the sidebar to make sure
[38] Really? I've been driving myself crazy with that all season.
Joba looks like he has definitely lost some weight since the beginning of the season. Anyone else notice the same?
There's our Joba w/ the 96 mph!
I missed the top of the first, but this inning Joba was smoking.
[39] yep, thomson
Looks like Gaudin is stating on Sunday AND Mitre is staying in the rotation. Swell.
[40] yes, i noticed that too - he looks slimmer, less doughy
whereas hughes looks like he is filling out - but more moreso muscular than fat
Monkeypants, what did Sterling say when Robinson hit that scary foul?
when he is on that is just such a beautiful swing to watch
weeping would be overjoyed
Oh, perfect, after Kay says that after you hit one of those just-fouls you figure that's it for that at-bat.
[46] I'm not mp, but he said "it's off the wall.. and he's held to a... it's a foul ball".
Balk!
[46] I have a feeling it ended with "we don't have a monitor".
Did Hinske actually get that balk? Was the umpire going to miss it??
[51] naa, but he did say that it went out of their view.
Yes, of course, Sterling would have to say they couldn't see the ball in the corner. And thanks, NYYfan22, I can hear him saying it. Perfect.
Some less than clutch ABs early on.
[52] it looked like the home plate ump was asking the 3b ump to weigh in and during the pause hinske looked like he said something about it
Happy Birthday Melky!
I have socks older than that...
That's my Melky.
Nice.
birthday sac fly
[54] Sterling couldn't see a foul ball back to the screen!
: )
thats what Joe Morgan calls "manufacturing runs"
[56] I think the HP playe ump was making sure the 3B ump didn't call time, so perhaps Hinkse was saying something like "I didn't ask for time".
So, uh, do we want to work the count, or is the idea to have Richmond pitch as long as possible?
paulie we don't want to go back to mitre last night - at least give us a break until saturday
Jeter is absolutely devouring everything that isn't right handed with a 95 mph fastball.
Oh, damn, bad luck.
Woohoo Johnny!
Damn warning track!
nice hit - but damn ground rule doubel
[70] It is a grounds rule double!
at least coney's name was invoked - i was worried he might be persona non grata
[71] So the ground caused a grounds rule double?
[64] I think we want the Blue Jays to be in "fuggit" mode...
: )
[71] critic!
[73] Yes. Unlike in football, where the ground cannot cause a fumble.
[74] If the Yankees score a few more runs, the Jays will be hacking.
[75] Actually, I was still imagining Sterling. He always says "grounds rule" and articulates it clearly to make sure everyone knows he says it that way.
(IMHO, either is acceptable.)
Arod needs a real day off.
[78] well grounds are unpredictable
(i was also kind of continuing our waiting for godot theme in honor of gaudin pitching sunday)
Yeah, walking Teix was smart. I have to admit I was thinking it at the time. In general I think an IBB or pitch-around with runners on second and third is stupid, esp. with two outs, but, yeah, big difference in recent RISP batting average there.
Oh, right, "critic!" I was out of that groove.
[79] in that rambling update that petey's substitute wrote, arod, jeter, and tex are supposed to get one off day this week
[82] yeah we will save more until sunday -
The Great Tazawa Experiment isn't looking too good so far...
Ah, I was wondering if it was a brawl -- I just saw "Kevin Youkilis hit by pitch" and then "On-field delay"...
Youk just charged at the pitcher and knocked him on the ground... fifth HBP between the two teams in two days.
Let's go Joba!!
[87] Suspension time.
Arod has been using that flip quite a bit lately.
Big time danger pitch coming here.
Kevin Youkilis has just incurred the wrath of the Seton Hall Prep Old Boys Network...proceed with caution Youk.
I really thought this would be a game in which the Jays wouldn't even challenge. This is very disappointing.
[89] Well, under ordinary circumstances, but you forgot a huge mitigating factor.
[94] What is that?
[95] The red "B" on his hat.
This is disgusting.
Well, that sucked.
The Bluejays have no business being tied 3-3. It's a game now. Frustrating.
Very similar comeback in Fenway too, dangit.
The Yankees have to score some quick runs otherwise this could get ugly.
Okay, let's get some walks of our own an then an extra-base hit...
we all realize the Sox are gonna now win 17 of their next 20, right?
Some bad swings ahead in the count...this is starting to look like last night.
Oh boy...did someone pull the plug on the Yankees?
The third inning was pathetic.
Another on-field delay in Boston!
I'm going to have to flip on the radio.
[103] At least...
[107] Francona was ejected for arguing an out call at 2B.
I just got home from work...this is starting to look like one of those,/b> games.
It was just Francona arguing the caught-stealing.
[109] I heard that some player was thrown out of game for arguing balls and strikes...from CF? Was that yesterday?
Huh, I'm not familiar with /b> games, Monkeypants.
I still can't believe Joba just disintegrated in the 3rd inning.
[112] Day before yesterday. Victorino.
[114] I better start believing.
Joba is just a mental mess.
LOL @ the ebb and flow!
The Red Sox get in a fight right as the Yankees lose all of theirs!
Amazing...
[115] What happened? Was he complaining about calls that his pitcher was not getting, or was he still barking about a previous AB?
This game really feels like yesterday, with Joba doing his best Mitre impersonation.
[118] He threw up his hands in disgust at a pitch he thought was a strike. Apparently he's got the eyes of a falcon.
that was a nice pitch - but get your shit together joba
He somehow snapped back into the game. Joba, I mean.
they let Richmond back in the game. all the hits were hard hit balls, they missed many chances there. 3 runs was a waste.
please, please do not lose this game.
76 pitches in 4 inn? sheesh.
[122] Note to Joba:
Do that before blowing a three run lead at home against Toronto, and then falling behind...
Getting thrown out of a game for throwing up your hands - off-camera no less - is ridiculous. That ump needs a good talking to.
Looks like Joba has regressed again. He really is a head case.
I guess that post ASB streak was a mirage. Well, it gives you hope at least.
[124] and richmond had 49 in 3... they could not put him away
This performance by Joba is very unsettling. Just when you think he has turned the corner, he has two horrible outings. Maybe his run after the ASB re-inflated his head with thoughts of grandure. Something tells me that the Yankees really have to stay on top of Joba.
[127] All of a sudden the out at the plate and the ground rule double really hurt.
If they lose this one, it's problematic.
and now richmond is unhittable
What the hell is going on? These last 5 ABs have the appearance of a team that is playing out the string. The Yankees are playing this game like they are in the Bluejays position. Letdown might not have been appropriate yesterday, but it is apt today.
that was gross - snap back into it team
[129] and the arod pop-up...
[126] more than a head case, I think its the age, this guy's a kid. still needs to figure his stuff out. I can't imagine being there at 23.
It's a double whammy if they lose. Even if they win, we've got Turgid Joba back in worrisome territory.
Bizarre. I thought this game was going to be a blowout. Now we got a contest on our hands.
[126] I'm not sure it should matter that it was off camera, but that does seem like an extreme reaction by the ump to a spontaneous gesture that is probably no worsse than any thing else players say or do during the game.
[134] I don't think age alone explains it. Joba's immaturity is definitely concern...it seems like it takes forever for him to learn fom his mistakes.
He is still making the same ones in this inning after all.
[92] Great lead pic on mlb.com of the brawl. Warning: close up of Youkilis face may disturn younger viewers!
[128] Pitching...it ain't easy ya know, Joba's body of work so far is still excellent
TIggers squander a Maglio triple.
[132] the offense shut down yesterday after the 5th inning, and these last 2 have been horrific. looks like they throw away their game plan and take hacks not remembering who the pitcher is and what he's throwing...
really hope they figure it out. be a real shame to punt part of their hard fought 6.5 game lead in just a handful of games
[134] I agree. You have to expect this kind of thing with young pitchers. They're going to be inconsistent. I wonder if the Yankees have the patience these days to develop young pitchers.
ugh. when i got home to start dinner, we were up 3-0 and so were the Tigers. i'm not enjoying my meal as much as i was hoping/planning...
[141] Wait, the game plan was to take hacks! Didn't you watch the first inning?
At the very least, the Yankees have to split Joba and MItre.
[142] Especially when those young pitchers have great success in the 'pen. That only raises expectations for immediate results in the rotation. The Yankees have never been the most patient club, at least in my memory.
[134] Age is part of it, but that's a lowest common denominator for almost all young players. I don't think youth is noteworthy but Joba's hotheadedness (or whatever) is.
[16] great story, Joseph, and welcome to the Banter!
[137] FWIW, the umpire said he ejected the Flyin' Hawaiian because he waved his arms in disgust, not once, but twice. The umpire says he warned him, and Victorino threw up his hands again. That's when he got the hook. Victorino says he doesn't remember doing it twice.
What was interesting was what happened afterwards. He nearly knocked Bako on his butt trying to get in the umpire's face. Bako and other teammates dragged him off before he could get himself suspended.
[137] It shouldn't matter either way, but if it was on camera I could see the ump feeling like he was being shown up. Ejection would still be ludicrous, of course.
[92] don't frack with the Prep! I am a Seton Hall Prep alumn. lol
So many 1-0 counts...so many early breaking balls. So little trust in his fastball.
Lowell homers, Sox lead.
Youkilis' replacement hits a go ahead HR. Someone wake up the Yankees...the division race is not over.
[144] I did, they were hacking at first-pitch strikes. now they're hacking at everything. we should acknowledge that richmond's fastball was terrible and probably its better now, but those at-bats looked a lot better than these last few.
[142] I think they have no other option, they have to. they have been doing a pretty good job IMHO with Hughes and Joba. also with Coke and Aceves.
If Porcello purposely drilled Youkilis, he and Leyland are morons.
[139] holy christ, is he an ugly muthafucka!!! wow : o
tommy hanson is fun to watch. he's pitching for the bravos tonight...
[153] boo.
[154] you're right. and i'm worried.
[151] no way! i grew up listening to Metal on WSOU!!! best college radio...EVER!!!
[156] If you were a 20-yr old rook and Jim Leyland ordered you to do something..I think you'd do it..
Bah!
christ and now the blue jays are making good catches
Oh are you kidding?
I miss Alex Rios.
Oh shit...this game is going down an ugly road. First Joba chokes up the lead, then the bats start hacking and now the Jays defense makes great plays.
Holy crap.
fucking sterling. UGH ...all these years and that jackass still does that to me 3, 4 times a week.
[157] yeah way! though technically we had no relationship with the college. At least while I was there. There year before I went they moved from the University campus to the west orange campus.
[156] Oh, he definitely did (and Leyland is definitely a moron, I established that yesterday, remember?). It was retaliation, even though Tazawa simply lost control.
[156] don't dare call porcello a moron! PORCELLO!!!
Before last night, I'd be very confident that the Yankees would come back to win this game. After seeing how they went into the tank last night , however, this one run lead now seems like a mountain.
[146] There's inconsistency and then there's not being able to handle your own mistakes because you're too wound up. Then there's plain ol' acting like a maniac.
[164] kay did the same
Yeah I have a sinking feeling about this game. I really hope I'm wrong!
It's amazing to me that Alex draws so many walks when he's hitting so badly. I mean, evenwhen he's hitting so badly.
[151] that makes two of us good sir...Hazard Zet Forward and all that good stuff
[166] Old skool grit and grind, play the game the right way, manly manmanness, Marlb Reds and rye, stick your pitch counts up your tutu, Missy..etc etc etc
[168] I agree, looks like everybody's back to trying to hit a HR
[165] oh, okay. the radio station was part of South Orange. Rockin' Roman, Missy Callazzo...good stuff! Craig Biggio went there...
[174] Whoa, like John Cleese at a baseball game!
[167] Oh you're an old timer compared to me. Some of the guys you must've gone to school with were faculty when I was there (Kahney, Snyder, Seidler, DeBellonia)
[173] alma mater sons be loyal! What year did you graduate?
Wait, that was a called strike, or he swung???
[178] Kahney is faculty? I always liked him. Real standup guy I though.
[175] Yep...looks like all three lefties had one thing on their mind.
[179] '02, I'm still a youngin'
Well, [180] irrelevant. Strange though.
[171] me too. just waiting for the other shoe to drop. like a 4 run top of the __th.
[176] I was an avid listener in those days though. I don't recall any dj names. mostly it was just cruising around in our suburban hood listening to WSOU!
[181] Yeah, I had him for math for 2 years, great guy. I think his brother teaches there now too.
[183] well met fellow alum! I was class of '90 which I think you figured out. hehe. My dad was class of '56. Now that is old school!
Holy shit I can't believe they are losing this game.
Damn, I gotta go.
I think this game will have a good finish. One reason: our bullpen is in very good shape right now.
I think I'll miss the next few game threads, too -- I'll be in Maine with only occasional internet access. (Looking forward to it, though -- that's my favorite part of Red Sox country!)
Hang in. Thelarmis, I'm leaving you in charge.
[177] Call me Mr. OK Basil Fawlty...
Yankees will win this game, of that there is no doubt..like Buddy Guy sang, "It Was Written"..then again, he also sang "Feels Like Rain"...
[191] I hope so...these games feel like Chicago, which felt like Anaheim. The MO is the same...take an early lead, blow it and never quite come back.
[187] oh man. Porcello starting tonight means he won't start Friday. I was hopeful as I'll be at Friday's Tigers game.
alright turning point time
Joba could take himself off the hook some with one more good inning, but now the Yankee offense has to wake the fuck up.
I always hated ugly. But now I hate him like evil incarnate for charging Porcello. I'm so fired up!
[169] Yeah, that is a worry. That DWI because someone at a strip club joked about the Red Sox winning the WS...not smart. But then, you want young players to have fire and competiveness.
I'm kind of reminded of Randy Johnson. He took a long time to reach his potential. Would the Yanks have that kind of patience?
They keep swinging at the same pitch. Are they watching from the bench?
This game has now definitely switched from Joba's shoulders to the bats. Joba really had one bad inning, but the Yankee hitters have been asleep for 3+ innings.
[198] thankfully robbie is not following the leader
Hinske has to lay off the breaking ball!!!
OK, Hinske, let's see a different true outcome.
No greenlight.
no green light for hinske!!
Here comes a K on the curve.
[190] I'll do my best, RI !!! enjoy Maine! : )
That pitch was made to smash.
he could have hammered that pitch
Or not.
The ABs have genuinely been bad since the 3rd inning.
The Yankee bats have been asleep since around the sixth inning last night.
Another K on the same damn breaking pitch...that's...unacceptable.
ugh - bats have just gone dormant
So, whom do we see out of the pen? I put my money on Gaudin.
[214] Bruney.
Bruney? Uh-oh.
I take it back...Joba is back on the hook. 6 innings and 4 runs is a bad outing.
[214] And I would lose my money.
[214] gaudin is starting sunday - so maybe he gets some work in later
[219] If the Yankees keep frittering away their game, I really hope they reconsider their plan to add Gaudin as a sixth man.
When Inglet hammers your fastball, that's never a good sign of things to come.
That's two mediocre-to-bad starts in a row for Joba. If Pettitte hits the wall or something, we're gonna be back at square one with this rotation (or was that a different square?)
Allow me to indulge a nightmare scenario for a moment and imagine November, with Yankee fans looking back on the sweep of the Red Sox as the height of a season that ended in September.
Interesting. The Jays announcers just commented on how Girardi handles the BP differently from Torre. They described Torre's pattern as "You might find three guys who are hot, and pitch em' pitch 'em pitch 'em until their amrs fall off...Girardi does things a little different."
That's darn near an exact quote. Their analysis is matter of debate, but it is interesting that at least some media talking heads are willing to critique Torre's BP usage.
[223] That critique is pretty common place around these parts, especially on sports talk radio.
[219] Huh? Did I miss something?
Are you joking?
[225] Yes...not only is Mitre staying in the rotation, but Gaudin is joining him. Girardi is also talking about rest for all the regulars. If the Yankees are letting down, they are taking their queue from the manager.
[224] I oly get national broadcasts much of teh time (FOX, ESPN)--I doubt I would hear McCarver or Miller say as much. Otherwise, I'm a bit out of the loop up here.
[223] there was an article in the ny post today (which i normally avoid like the plague but was linked there on a whole other matter) that basically said the exact same thing
[227] Seriously, I think I have missed an episode or two. Id GAudin taking one of Joba's starts? Or is he going to tag team with Mitre? Or is someone pulling my leg?
[225] Apparently so. It was on the front page of MLB.com.
Fucking incredible...Lowell replaces Youkilis and hits 2 HRs....it really feels like there has been some cosmic turn in this pennant race. Maybe the Yankees need a brawl of their own?
[230] He is joining a temporary 6-man rotation, which works out because, as we all know, no team needs a good 6th starter.
[230] seems to be a bit of confusion (at least on the part of petey's substitute - petey is off tonight) - but it appears gaudin will start sunday and joba will either get extra rest or skipped - that detail doesn't seem to have come out yet
[231] Ha-ha. That shows you what happens when I put in a legitimate long day at work! Ok, so I read the article, and I'll just bite my tongue for now.
Gaudin likely to start Sunday for Yanks
Hm. If Bruney gets back into a groove, that's a good thing.
I just want to add that the use of Phil Hughes this weekend was comical, but this whole Mitre/Gaudin business is not.
...
Okay neither is comical.
****
Letting up on a division race with a five run lead in mid-August is insane.
[233] All the better, since no team needs a good fifth starter, either. Now, an eight inning guy...that's another story. Oops...ok, I'll stop.
[237] I think it's house money week.
I need the Yankees to win this game.
No more Richmond to kick around...now the Yankees have to face legitimate relievers.
[236, et al] Seriously, with off days, can't Joba simply be skipped withour going to a six man rotation, at least until the division is a little more secure?
[240] you and me both.
[242] but that would be wasting gaudin or mitre
see: Good, better to be lucky than
Derek Jeter..the original "Professional Hitter"..can I get a "tm" please, Monkeypants? my Mac is at home so can't do it here..
a 5 game month from now and we can all start sucking each others' lollipops, but this is a little early: the six man rotation would be horseshit. i presumed they were stretching Ace out the other night--why on earth give him 4 innings otherwise?
[244] Or both! I totally overlooked that.
5 game LEAD, I mean.......runs. we need them. right here.
[246] Derek Jeter, Professional Hitter™.
short video of the puke/porcello tumble at lohud...
Send Jeter?
Definitely send Jeter now.
This is f$%^ing unbelievable.
time for one of those come from behind hrs (or even hits) here alex
bleep off blue jays
Can't wait to face Romero tomorrow...nothing like getting swept by the Jays to give the division cushion right back.
[251] wow, youk looked terrible there. first throwing his helmet at the pitcher!!!!! and missing! what the hell was that, and then getting thrown down to the ground.
I thought he was tougher.
[258] too much "sexy time"
Edwin Elpidio Encarnacion has a reputation for bad defense, but he's been okay so far.
this is probably the worst game of the season for me. against a shitty team, that's playing for nothing, and showing it; and the yanks are just punting the game away.
"Since A-Rod popped up with the bases juiced to end the second, Richmond has retired 13 of 15, struck out five, walked one and allowed just one hit"
[258] can't say i am surprised - as emma's friends from her yankee stadium memory would say "he's a fucking pussy"
hughes in for his 1 out
What, no Hughes for one batter?!?
Chipper just tattooed a Tyler Clippard pitch. good god, he crushed it!!! wow : o
Hughes for one batter!!!!!!
In two days, the Yankees have managed to create an incredibly high level of frustration with this team.
Ok, off the ledge. It's David Robertson.
we got some misinformation - robertson in for 1 batter
OK, someone needs to get on base, at least to try to get the lineup turned over.
Hughes was warming up though.
c'mon Yanks!
Let me say this one more time....I can't f#$%ing believe the Yankees are losing this game.
[273] me either. i have no patience for them tonight. no excuse for the offense. what a pathetic performance.
OK, so I've been thinking about the earlier conversation on this thread. If Gaudin is going to start on Sunday (and presumably would not appear before then), why did they put him immediately on the ML 25-man roster? Wasn't it possible to stick him in Scranton and keep a reliever who could be used? Or do MLB rules dictate that a MLB player who is traded must go directly to the new team's ML roster?
that was not really even that close regardless of how barajas tried to frame it
godzillA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well then.
That is a ridiculously good AB by Matsui.
FINALLY
that AB was EPIC
MATSUIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
GODZILLER!!!!
Hideki Matsui..overall he has been such a great signing for the Yanks, TRULY a "Professional Hitter"! 松井愛してる!!
Good to see at least 1 guy doesn't want to give away the division, yet. : D
[284] die ski des. that's all i got. i think it means, "i like it very much", or something like that. forgive my spelling! : )
holy fuck po!!!!!
LOVE IT
The Stadium strikes again!!
Make that 2 guys. Whoo-hoo.
Po gets his Jeter on.
[291] hey that's even more damon's spot!
Hmmm...that maybe shoulda been fan interference on that 341' blast.
sterling just made a call to the bullpen.
...and suzyn is getting into her insane "rawgeeer clemens" mode.
This team really sucks! Chokers! UNACCEPTABLE!
ooh, i wish i wrote back-to-back like i was thinkin'!!!! : )
[293] Nope, the fan's glove was on but not over the wall.
[286] Not bad, thelarmis! Did some babealicious Japanese jazz groupie teach you that? In latin script you woudl write it "dai suki desu", "I really like it" 大好きです!
Everybody's trying to hit a home run - and then they do. Not a teachable moment, but I'll take it!
Matsui's was huge. Crushed, and just really, sorely needed. As a win is tonight. Giving back two in the standings to the Sox immediately after the coronation would be pretty bad.
helluva catch by the fan, not interference though
woo hoo!!!!!
That took some crazy restraint (maybe just a solid thinking fan) to not eff that up.
i like this Carlson kid. good pitcher!
[294] Luckily, again, I get the Jays feed for tonight's game.
[275] i don't know the answers to the technical parts of the question about gaudin mp - but i will throw out some more questions - does gaudin have options? do you think the yanks planned to use him as a 6th starter when they acquired him or this plan just developed the last few days?
No way this call gets overturned. This is Jorge second go ahead HR that's been under review.
Not interference. C'mon, play ball!
[251] ooh ooh! Porcello kicked his ass!!! ugly got taken down!!
Mo can use the extra time to warm up...the delay only hurts Carlson.
wow Cito drinks the BIG Red Bull...careful there Cito
[298] thanks, man! nah, one of my childhood best friends took a japanese class in college 15 plus years ago. it's the only phrase she told me and i've always remembered it! i like your scenario better! ; )
[308] i'm so proud that my use of "ugly" as a noun for youkilis has caught on
[312] as you should be. I think I coined captain facemask though I can't be sure.
inglett tried his damndest to mess the yankees up tonight
[305] I don't know. And really, I was not complaining, but I am curious. For example, Gaudin didn't show up until Sunday, even though the trade happened a day or two before. The Yankees, IIRC, did not make a roster move until he showed up. I've always wondered when, technically, such moves had to made. Can you trade for a guy and make him, say, take the train so he doesnt show up for four days--giving you a chance to delay making any roster moves?
Hello, all! I see I've come just in time for another comeback!
[315] yeah, i wondered about that too.
Youkilis was ridiculous there. It wasn't like he threw at his head or something, and he freaks out. Throws the helmet at Porcello who gestures "Who, me?" then Zimmerizes (or is that Pedro-izes) Youk?
That's bulletin board material for ... somebody, by god!
[315] I believe there is a window in which the roster move has to be made. I want to say within 3 days, but I am not sure. The reason the Yankees left several completed signings unannounced a few years ago was exactly for this reason.
[315] yeah it seems odd the order in which it was done - and it seemingly took him forever to get here (not that i was in such a rush for him to show up)
[313] thanks. yeah i quite like captain facemask and have taken to using it more than my other names for him.
[315] IIRC, guys who are traded have 72 hours to report. So you can stall a bit, but not much. The 72 hours, I believe, is to give the player a chance to gather his belongings, try to make housing arrangements, deal with family issues, etc.
I want to say this was an issue once when Rickey was traded, but I have no basis for that, so don't quote me on it.
[318] Porcello definitely got the better of the tussle.
FWIW, it is pouring biblically at my house, 20 or so miles southwest of Boston - I imagine that game is going to be delayed for quite a while.
C'mon team, some more runs please!
[320] yeah, Captain Facemask is pretty awesome. a buddy of mine calls him Vagitek and that's what i generally use, but i like captain facemask. speaking of which, i picked up a gig at Ga Tech this Friday, a few hours ago...
That's my Melky!
nice additional run there team
OK, I can't bitch about Girardi's managing tonight.
yeah, i'd love another run here and a quick, easy inning from my man Mo!
you better not hit jeter asshole
[320] i am definitely a fan of captain facemask of course. :)
but ugly describes youk in such a perfect way.
easy there Roenickie, just because you're the best player in NHL '94...
what happened? gamecast is frozen at a pitching change. birthday boy come thru w/ a score trucking single?!
[324] yay for working thelarmis! is this as a predictor or musician?
ya know, all my bitching about sterling and waldman, when I listen to other games on the radio I usually get bored. What they lack in accurate descriptions and unbaised statements they make up for with sheer humor. heh
[319][321] Thanks!
[332] yep. and then stole 2nd.
[332] Melky singled, Hairston Jr scored, and now Melky stole 2nd!
[328] How about 4 or 5 more runs, and Robertson can pitch the 9th?
[324] congrats thelarmis.
[334] I agree. They call an AWFUL game, but for whatever reason there still is something oddly entertaining about them.
Jeter is now 0-2 with 2 Ks against Roenicke.
[324] College gig - awesome dude.
[311] One day, man, when your fusion trio tours Asia :)
I want Matsui to go yard again this inning!
[339] making fun of egotistical halfwits is usually quite a fun activity
Huge hit by Damon....great effort in the rundown.
Kay just made an excellent point regarding the stadium "finding it's voice" over the past few days. He said that early in the season you got the sense that people were coming to see the ballpark...now they're coming to see the team. I think theres something that.
3 outs to 70
[327] I agree...definitely extra credit points for bringing Robertson.
very nice inning team - even threw in questionable basrunning for good measure
[333] i predict it'll be a freelancing gig as a drummer! [338] thanks! but it's really no big deal. just a dinkly little gig. actually, it'll prolly be a pain in the ass. frat party, early load in, long night, not such great pay. but i'm glad to be playing and the music will be very good and fun!
Damn, one more run and they could save Mo. I would, of course, leave Robertson out there, but I can't complain too much about Mo in a SAVE SITUATION.
[343] Oh sure, but truth be told I'd take them over a Mets radio broadcast. Listening to Wayne Hagin is like listening to grass grow.
[344] I've got to switch to gameday - you're faster with updates than yahoo! ;)
[345] That is gratifying. Be it ever so wasteful and extravagant, there's no place like home.
[345] I definitely agree. I've been to about 12 games and the focus has definitely shifted from the Stadium to the team.
[342] to be honest with you, i think our fusion trio woulda been quite successful in Europe during our heyday, early this decade.
good job, johnny!
[352] Yeah, I've been to about the same amount (I have the midweek plan, plus the random games I go to) and its become routine for me at this point...in a good way.
Damn it...that's bad for the stat sheet.
that's always a bit disconcerting
OK, that was charitable. Now, let's get serious.
[350] I've complained about the radio duo too - but when I had XM, I remember listening to other teams' broadcasts and thinking they had it just as bad, if not worse.
Primary exception - Dodgers with Scully, of course. Some others, too - the Rangers and the Indians and the Blue Jays.
[341] it would be awesome if i scored a teaching gig at a college. this is just a one night frat party deal. no big deal. glad to be playing/working though...
MO!!!
Come on Mo...don't make us sweat.
[357] let's get very serious here - dp serious
Shut up Michael Kay #45,943
"Ironically that home run ended up where Mariano will end up - Monument Park"
ugh, i don't like the homer. let's win this...NOW!!!
[345] It helps that the team has been playing better too :)
are you in GA, thelarmis?
[358] Am still wanting a Banter poll on the following: Would you listen to Sterling/Suzyn or Hawk Harrelson if stuck ina long car ride?
Not sure who I would choose..Hawk is intoelrable but at least you would know what was happening..
[359] Free booze as part of the deal? My fraternity always made it a point to give the band free booze when we had one.
[366] you are overrating being in the loop
alright that's more like it - sit the hell down inglett
[366] The dynamic duo. I would either crash my car in rage from listening to Hawk's homerism, or pull the radio out and throw it out the window. That man drives me insane.
There's a comforting familiarity with the dynamic duo, no matter how long it may take to get a score update, or find out what inning it is, or what's going on.
That man again....I still have flashbacks.
[366] Definitely WaldLing...Hawk is absolutely insufferable. So are they, but theres something about him that just makes my ears bleed.
[366] Sterling/Waldman, fer sher. The ChiSox broadcaters are the worst. But Sterlimg/Waldman are bad..real, real bad.
That strike three was a Mariano strike. That's fine by me.
Come on Mo...!!
Nice
[365] yup, Atlanta!
[366] Sterling/Suzyn, hands down. not only are they better than Hawk, but it also means i'm listening to a Yankee game! : )
[367] ooh, i'm sure, but that doesn't apply to me. there's generally free booze on any/every gig i play, but i've never had a beer and played a gig in my life. nor have i ever driven a car after drinking. i just WON'T do either one. ever. in fact, i'm going 2 weeks with no beer. i'm working a decent amount and i need to prepare for the Fusion gig...
NICE!
GREAT win
Wow...he didn't give in to Scutaro...interesting...I'll take it!
that what's up - nice win team - didn't want to drop 2 in a row to the jays
Damn that was a pretty sick last pitch
Wow.... This team really sucks! Chokers! UNACCEPTABLE!
atta boy, Mo!!!
nice win!!! after last night, it felt like we hadn't won in awhile. let's hope they continue at the Fens and the Kittens come back to win. Rays/Halos just under way...
Yay Yankees!
Way to come back and take that one!
Have a great evening folks!
BTW Suzyn Waldman is the absolute worst/most freakish thing I've ever heard. I rarely listen to the radio, she's so annoying, but not to the point where it entertains me. Sometimes I've listened in some weird repulsion tractor beam, but otherwise she makes me want to puke. I was listening to the pregame of the first game in the Marlins series and she kept saying "It's very interesting". Over and over - it was driving me nuts.
I am not giving Sterling a pass here, he's a windbag, but he's not quite on the same level as Waldman.
Hopefully AJ can give us one good start in this series. It's nice to have a late comeback, but they really need to put their foot down on them early.
[382] That wasn't true tonight.
wow, Shaq on BBTN. he was the Cardinals' guest. standing next to Pujols, made Albert look as tiny as me. he's HUGE!!! : o
I think this was a huge win.
jeff weaver is starting for torre tomorrow night.
[389] me too. we must take the series tomorrow, then 3 of 4 from the M's...
