"A New York Treasure" --Village Voice

Just Desserts

Norman_Rockwell_Thanksgiving

Carl Pavano was a bust of the first order in New York, one of the worst free agent signings in club history. This season, he pitched twice against the Yanks when he was with the Cleveland Indians, both no-decisions. But he pitched reasonably well. On April 19th, he held the Yanks to one run on four hits and walk over six innings, and on May 31, he gave up three runs on seven hits over seven innings.

Tonight, Pavano is on the hill for the Twins. Hey, Vincente Padilla was a load yesterday for the Dodgers so anything can happen. But it sure would taste good to see the Yanks bang Pavano around some. Hope the bats are feeling hungry like:

Andy Pettitte goes for the Bombers. Nothing else to say.  Let’s hope we get the Good Andy.

 andyp

Lots of excitement. Angels sweep the Sox, Paplebon blows the save. Time for New York to end it right here. No need to see Scott Baker tomorrow.

Let’s Go Yan-Kees!

[0] damn alex i used to love hungry hungry hippos

flash said in his flash points on lohud that the yanks need to just go out and play and not worry about revenge - which i think has some merit - hopefully they just go out and treat pavano like another mediocre pitcher and that will be that - after all revenge is a dish best served cold

3 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 11, 2009 5:15 pm

I can't think of anyone that would top Pavano as not only the worst free agent signing in franchise history, but the worst acquisition of any kind.

4 JeremyM   ~  Oct 11, 2009 5:21 pm

[2] No no no, revenge is like serving cold cuts.

[3] Money wise it's not close, but Juan Gonzalez injuring himself on his first at bat with the Indians on his second go around there and never playing another moment that season was a classic.

Omg, that spot takes me back. Hungry fucking hippos, indeed. It's a crazy world.

7 The Hawk   ~  Oct 11, 2009 5:42 pm

I'd say Pavano pitched well, period - no "reasonably" necessary. I mean it pains me to say it, but it's the truth.

[3] The Russian annexation of Afghanistan was pretty bad.

[2] "It is verrry colld. In spaace!!!!!!"

10 jeaner   ~  Oct 11, 2009 5:46 pm

I am going to agree that the Yankees should approach Pavano as any other piss-poor excuse for a major league pitcher, but I confess I still think we should all pool our resources and sue him for fraud, misrepresentation, and anything else we can think of.

(I try so hard not to be bitter)

11 The Hawk   ~  Oct 11, 2009 5:46 pm

I've come to moderately dislike watching left-handed pitching on TV. I wish they'd set up two cameras so that the angle isn't all weird on lefties.

If you don't know what I'm talking about, ignore this.

12 mehmattski   ~  Oct 11, 2009 5:47 pm

[11] The dead-centerfield camera would solve that, neither handed pitcher would be coming from an odd angle. And we would all be better at telling balls and strikes.

13 The Hawk   ~  Oct 11, 2009 5:49 pm

''I think the way we did it, in a sweep, in Game 3 with two out in the ninth, gives us momentum,'' Mike Scioscia said.

Uh-Oh!!!

14 The Hawk   ~  Oct 11, 2009 5:50 pm

[12] So why is it angled anyway?

15 RIYank   ~  Oct 11, 2009 5:51 pm

Watching the Patriots and Broncos. (Throwback jerseys work for me, in football, by the way.) It's excellent football weather. I can't believe they're going to play baseball there.

27 The Hawk   ~  Oct 11, 2009 6:56 pm

51 Evil Empire   ~  Oct 11, 2009 7:25 pm

Hey Banterers...Just thought I'd mention the Twins averages against Pettitte from the Bill James daily Matchup:

Span CF .......................1-4 .250
Cabrera SS....................4-15 .267
Mauer C.........................4-10 .400 1 HR, 1 BB
Cuddyer 1B....................5-14 .357 1 HR
Kubel RF........................0-3 .000 1 BB
Young LF.......................9-14 .643 (YIKES!!!!!!)
Harris 3B........................8-17 .471 (ZOINKS)
Morales DH....................Never Faced
Punto 2B.......................2-6 .333

Ok these are mostly small samples...I just kind of wonder why Gardenhire wouldn't push the action a bit and go Harris, Cabrera, Young, Mauer, Cuddyer

Still, I am worried about Young and Harris. I'd have to guess that they see the ball come out of Andy's hand well.

52 rbj   ~  Oct 11, 2009 7:26 pm

No Chip. It took A-Rod, his agent and Brian Cashman to make Girardi understand Alex needed a day off here and there.

53 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 11, 2009 7:26 pm

Shorten the fuck up, boys!

I don't like this.

56 williamnyy23   ~  Oct 11, 2009 7:26 pm

Funny thing about baseball...the game plan is to not try to pull the off speed, and that's exactly what all four hitters have done. I am looking forward to auick adjustment.

57 ms october   ~  Oct 11, 2009 7:27 pm

pavano getting ks is not cool

[51] young has pretty severe lefty/right splits

58 Evil Empire   ~  Oct 11, 2009 7:27 pm

If anyone wants the Yankees numbers against Pavano, I'll be happy to oblige. Frankly, they're mostly not too good except for Johnny Damon...I just hope we can keep it close and run up his pitch count since he's apparently got a case of "I'm Kenny Rogers" disease.

I hope Girardi checks his hand for pine tar.

59 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 11, 2009 7:28 pm

Pretty good 2-2 swing there.

63 Evil Empire   ~  Oct 11, 2009 7:30 pm

Carl Pavano suddenly looks like Brett Tomko (ok not really like Tomko since he didn't strike anyone out, but at least Kenny Rogers).

64 williamnyy23   ~  Oct 11, 2009 7:30 pm

There you go Jorge...the first guy to attempt to drive the ball the other way.

66 rbj   ~  Oct 11, 2009 7:31 pm

Least it wasn't a strikeout.

67 Evil Empire   ~  Oct 11, 2009 7:32 pm

By the way, what does Pete Abraham do now that the season is over? Does he continue to follow the playoffs from afar, and write about them for Boston.com? I know that the Globe probably wanted him immediately, but it's a bit hard to understand why he wouldn't stick with Lohud and make the move in the off season

68 williamnyy23   ~  Oct 11, 2009 7:32 pm

I am not worried yet because this has been more about poor ABs than good pitching by Pavano. If by the 4th inning or so they are still tyring to pull change ups and taking 91 mph fastballs down the middle, I'll be concerned.

69 williamnyy23   ~  Oct 11, 2009 7:34 pm

[67] Kind of a case of bad timing for Pete, assuming he isn't happier that he gets some earlier down time. I've checked out his posts and they seem to be very basic and uniteresting. While LoHud is still drawing 1000+ comments, Pete Abe's blog posts, which are lost amid all the other authors, are getting single digits (excluding comments taking digs at Pete).

70 Bobtaco   ~  Oct 11, 2009 7:35 pm

[68] Patience. Wait until they go through the order once...

71 williamnyy23   ~  Oct 11, 2009 7:35 pm

73 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 11, 2009 7:36 pm

[68] [70] Indeed.

74 51cq24   ~  Oct 11, 2009 7:37 pm

[68] you may call it "poor ABs" because you think they're not doing what they should be doing with the changeup. but if he's actually fooling them with the change, he's pitching pretty well.

75 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 11, 2009 7:37 pm

i hate this stadium

80 rbj   ~  Oct 11, 2009 7:39 pm

[72] That'll make Peter unhappy.

BTW, if the Broncos are smart enough to play a day game in Denver, why have the Rockies play at night. Considering they were snowed out the day before. MLB is real stupid here.

81 JeremyM   ~  Oct 11, 2009 7:39 pm

I'm a little surprised Gardner didn't get the start, seems like the perfect guy to chop his way on base in this stadium.

82 williamnyy23   ~  Oct 11, 2009 7:39 pm

[74] When batters get fooled, that isn't always good pitching. Pavano has little deception, so my bet is on the Yankees ABs have been poor so far. I hope I am right in giving the Yankee lineup the benefit of the doubt over Pavano.

83 williamnyy23   ~  Oct 11, 2009 7:40 pm

[80] The Rockies are probably playing at night BECAUSE the Broncos played in the afternoon.

84 williamnyy23   ~  Oct 11, 2009 7:41 pm

[81] And run wild on the very slow to the plate Pavano.

85 williamnyy23   ~  Oct 11, 2009 7:41 pm

Cano tried to yank the change...the adjustment hasn't taken hold yet.

86 Evil Empire   ~  Oct 11, 2009 7:41 pm

[69] Yeah you're right, Pete's game post today had 48 comments on it. Lohud already has 533! Granted, there are probably "brand loyalties" involved with other blogs that probably had as many as Lohud. I pretty much post comments here exclusively with the rare Lohud comment or two. I have to think that Pete will build an audience once he's going. That dude is a pioneer for newspapers.

BUT, right now they've got 5 different people posting 5 different posts on the same day and it's a bit hectic.

Cano is 0-5 against Pavano lifetime

87 51cq24   ~  Oct 11, 2009 7:41 pm

[82] i don't know if assuming they're having bad at bats is giving them the benefit of the doubt, but yeah hopefully they will start pounding him immediately

88 williamnyy23   ~  Oct 11, 2009 7:43 pm

[86] I don't expect Pete to every approach what he had at LoHud. He was a first mover who ruled his own domain. Now, he is one small writer amid big names on a big city blog.

89 randym77   ~  Oct 11, 2009 7:44 pm

Somebody get a hit. Being no-hit by Pavano is too much to take.

90 williamnyy23   ~  Oct 11, 2009 7:44 pm

[83] Yeah. But still.

Um, Nick, 4 balls.

96 Evil Empire   ~  Oct 11, 2009 7:45 pm

[88] But that's a problem...Too many beat writers spoil the broth, right? I can understand having 4-5 authors here but Alex, etc., aren't beat writers, and Cliff, Will, Diane and Emma all bring something a little different.

97 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 11, 2009 7:45 pm

So now we're forgetting the count?

98 ms october   ~  Oct 11, 2009 7:45 pm

I am a little shocked by the early returns.

112 Evil Empire   ~  Oct 11, 2009 7:49 pm

Pavano isn't going to Kenny Rogers us folks. Rogers was a deceptive lefty who was on top of his game. His team was tied 1-1 against the Yankees when he took the hill. Pavano trails 2-0. It's somewhat house money for the Yankees.

Also, there are a TON of differences from the 2006 Yankees and the 2009 Yankees, namely: A hot Arod + a pretty good Nick Swisher + and a great Tex + a shutdown pen minus Sheffield minus Randy Johnson minus our bullpen (save Mo) who stunk that day.

113 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Oct 11, 2009 7:50 pm

117 Evil Empire   ~  Oct 11, 2009 7:52 pm

[113] No, but Andy Pettitte actually is....the TBS guys don't want to admit how effective Andy has been so far. He's struck out less than Pavano (1 to 4), but he's been pretty economical.

118 ms october   ~  Oct 11, 2009 7:52 pm

[114] i would guess as melky and gardner are basically about even as starters but gardner is such a huge weapon as a pr, that is going to be his primary role this post season unless guzman is added to the alcs if the yanks get there

136 RIYank   ~  Oct 11, 2009 7:59 pm

Hey team.
I missed the first two innings. I won't explain why, because some people might get mad at me.

137 Just Fair   ~  Oct 11, 2009 7:59 pm

Teix and A-Rod need to pick a pitch and sit on it. Hit it hard up the middle. All that good stuff.

138 williamnyy23   ~  Oct 11, 2009 7:59 pm

Pavano still pumping fastballs down the middle to start each hitter.

That's just an awful AB...Damon looks lost. All those pitches were very hittable.

143 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 11, 2009 8:00 pm

All

144 rbj   ~  Oct 11, 2009 8:00 pm

Normally I don't want to see any player get injured, but I wouldn't mind it if a batted ball struck Pavano and knocked him out of the game.

145 matt b   ~  Oct 11, 2009 8:00 pm

Is it just me or has it seemed the Yankees tend to strike on the 2nd and 3rd times through the order. I won't get worried about the lack of offense yet.

[135] The WBC delayed things a week this year, plus the playoffs are drawn out a bit more now.

148 Raf   ~  Oct 11, 2009 8:01 pm

[135] I am annoyed at that. There is no reason why they can't go through 3 rounds of playoffs before November starts.

Okay, I admit it, Mr OK is correct.

151 williamnyy23   ~  Oct 11, 2009 8:02 pm

The lack of adjusment is now becoming frustrating. The pattern has been the same....fastball down the middle, followed by tailing fastball on the inside corner, followed by off speed late in the count.

Jesus, that was a terrible call.

156 Evil Empire   ~  Oct 11, 2009 8:02 pm

[121] I suppose that depends on how you define "house money"....obviously the last 5 games of the year this season were house money because we could have won all 5 or lost all 5 or somewhere in between and there could be no impact on the standings whatsover.

I'm defining it a bit looser. We're up 2 games to 0. If we happen to lose this game, which I doubt we will, we'll still have 2 games left to advance to the next round. So to an extent this is house money.

But, the lineup is not the old Torre House money lineup

[160] Yeah I wondered that too..hope all is well in the Great North..maybe he's immersed in the CFL season?

166 randym77   ~  Oct 11, 2009 8:05 pm

[147] Yeah, but those things are likely to continue (at least every four years for the WBC).

Of course, starting the season earlier has similar problems. Remember a couple of years ago, when they moved a bunch of games to domed parks up north, because of the snow in early spring?

Better that than playing the WS in a blizzard, though. Maybe the Twins would be used to it, but their opponents probably wouldn't be.

Will these TBS assbags get a room already? Pavano Pavano Pavano. I don't want to be too explicit about how well Andy's doing across the way... but look at the score. board. now. grasshopper.

And isn't there anyone in their truck who can clue them in on the real Pavano/NYY backstory? To them it seems to go like this: "He really felt bummed out to be hurt so much." Can I hear a little love for "He's a shirker who fucking stole $40M"?

170 Just Fair   ~  Oct 11, 2009 8:06 pm

This is the goddamn dream game dickhead envisioned before he put his head down on his sack of money last night. He's throwing strikes and forcing the action. Luckily for now it is a draw. C'mon Andy. Big inning.

171 JeremyM   ~  Oct 11, 2009 8:06 pm

172 thelarmis   ~  Oct 11, 2009 8:07 pm

174 Evil Empire   ~  Oct 11, 2009 8:07 pm

Pavano is at 54 pitches, averaging 13.5 per inning through 4.

Andy is at 34 pitches, average 11.33 per inning.

But we've got the much better bullpen....Let's just stayed tied through 7 and see what happens when Carl tires a bit...He's gotten to 100 a few times this season and has gotten to as high as 112 once...we'll see.

211 Raf   ~  Oct 11, 2009 8:14 pm

[190] It wasn't no apparent reason, it had to do with the future of baseball in Colombia. They have a disagreement with the way things should be done there.

"Andy Pettitte matching Carl Pavano Pitch for Pitch!"

Um, no, actually, Andy's slightly better:

Pavano 54 pitches 35 strikes (64.8% strikes) and one hit, 6 K's

Petttitte 48 pitches 33 strikes (68.75% strikes) and no hits, 5 K's

But the Yankees have the better Bullpen

[280] Beer is my friend as I've watched this game, ms oct. ;) Well that and my kids wanted to watch the start of the game with me and the Mrs before bedtime.

[282] I half expect Pavano to spontaneously combust at any moment, so when Cano's bat went flying I thought, uh-oh, Pavano's going to trip over that or it'll hit him . . .

[296] Baby steps, right? Well with any luck, you'll get a satisfying good night's sleep tonight, after the Yanks dispatch the Idle.

354 Evil Empire   ~  Oct 11, 2009 8:35 pm

The worst part about all this is that TBS, ESPN, etc. etc., the non-NYC media is going to portray Pavano as an innocent victim, who was abused during his 4 years as a Yankee, and now he's fucking Braveheart with a half-blue face..

373 Evil Empire   ~  Oct 11, 2009 8:38 pm

I take it back...Pavano's 2006 Kenny Rogers obviously....Damon was hitting .417 against him before this game and has K'd three times.

Just remember we had a broken unit on the mound in 2006; this year we have Andrew.

374 Bobtaco   ~  Oct 11, 2009 8:38 pm

391 williamnyy23   ~  Oct 11, 2009 8:42 pm

[383] From the 3rd inning on, this team should have been trying to swat those early fastballs the other way. Only Jeter and Posada seem to have caught on. In Damon's AB, he flailed at an eary slider and then took three meatballs down the middle.

392 jeaner   ~  Oct 11, 2009 8:42 pm

400 williamnyy23   ~  Oct 11, 2009 8:44 pm

442 Evil Empire   ~  Oct 11, 2009 8:49 pm

Ok, here's some optimism..This has been a bit of a long inning. I think Andy will be done now. The Twins only lead 1-0. It's not 5-0. Let's see how Pavano reacts to sitting on the bench a little longer than he has been so far in this game. Let's see if he can have the shutdown (c) inning....

443 Just Fair   ~  Oct 11, 2009 8:50 pm

Okay. Keep it a one. See Johnny, when you swing at strikes with a guy on second, you have a better chance of scoring him.

457 Yankee Fan in Boston   ~  Oct 11, 2009 8:52 pm

[450] I'm guessing that their system is terrible. They mentioned on air that it doesn't adjust to different hitters. I'll bet this is TBS' problem.

458 RIYank   ~  Oct 11, 2009 8:52 pm

Relax, Andy, You did great.

459 jeaner   ~  Oct 11, 2009 8:52 pm

I'll take that as a bad inning any day of the week.

465 thelarmis   ~  Oct 11, 2009 8:53 pm

ok, good. keep it at 1. we can score in bunches and should think about doing that right...NOW!!!

i let Pettitte start the 7th...

466 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Oct 11, 2009 8:53 pm

Great performance from Andy P, zero problems with giving up the single to Mauer, best hitter in the AL this year. The O will come through, I have no doubts!

467 matt b   ~  Oct 11, 2009 8:53 pm

[441] Well, I don't think he gives a rat's ass about the Twins, but I'm sure he wants them to win tonight - you think TBS wants a THIRD DS sweep?

468 RIYank   ~  Oct 11, 2009 8:53 pm

I'm more amused than enraged by Caray. The world is full of morons. You can't let them get to you merely by being morons.

469 williamnyy23   ~  Oct 11, 2009 8:54 pm

[453] That very well might be true, but there was no reason to fall behind 2-0 in the first place. If you watch those first two pitches, in the first one, he didn't pick up the target until late because he was looking at the runner, and in the second, he used a slide step. Diverting his focus when all he had to do is get Cabrera is simply bad baseball. Pettitte didn't get beat...he beat himself.

470 Evil Empire   ~  Oct 11, 2009 8:54 pm

ok, I have switched to John and Suzyn with the TV volume down...every game this series that's worked for us....

also, remember, the Twins are starting to look at each other and thinking, "damn, we can't hold a lead against THIS team...."

471 rbj   ~  Oct 11, 2009 8:54 pm

Let's go offense. You can't have Carl Pavano pitch a shutout.

472 RIYank   ~  Oct 11, 2009 8:54 pm

[467] Yeah, that's my theory too. Caray is out of a job as soon as the Yanks win...

[469] yes, but he gave up 1 run. if he had let span steal and then given up a single to cabrera, i'd guess you'd be complaining. your "more relaxed" postseason version shouldn't be so worked up. we're up 2-0 in the series and only down 1 run.

483 Just Fair   ~  Oct 11, 2009 8:56 pm

612 williamnyy23   ~  Oct 11, 2009 9:11 pm

If the plexiglass was still there, Posada's ball would have been a double.

613 Evil Empire   ~  Oct 11, 2009 9:11 pm

[591] I don't think he'll ever get a following like he had at Lohud....At Lohud he was the first beat reporter that did what he did and built an audience. (And I'm using "beat writer" to separate what Pete did from the great work here on the Banter). He had a lot of great access and posted often.

But in Boston, there's a lot of other writers, and a lot of blogs that have brand loyalty. I think they're putting a square peg into a round hole by putting him into a blog with a ton of other writers.

614 thelarmis   ~  Oct 11, 2009 9:11 pm

Andy's only at 75 pitches. i want him in still.

[582] GREAT fucking record! so are Fragile, Close to the Edge & Relayer.

there aren't MVP's in the LDS, right?

615 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Oct 11, 2009 9:12 pm

Apologies to all..perhaps a new commenting guideline is in order; no sexual refernces to Sterling & Waldman allowed upon penalty of banishment!

[608] you and girardi are really on the same page this series huh?

619 OldYanksFan   ~  Oct 11, 2009 9:12 pm

Jeter is 4 for 9, 4 runs scored, 2 RBI.
The other 7 guys... not worth mentioning.

620 matt b   ~  Oct 11, 2009 9:12 pm

Has anyone else felt that Darling's been dragged down a bit by Caray in this series? I really enjoy his work during Met games and I feel like he's been a little too much "Captain Obvious" in this series and holding the "Twins do the little things" mythical line.

621 Diane Firstman   ~  Oct 11, 2009 9:12 pm

[612]

when did they remove the plexiglass?

622 Just Fair   ~  Oct 11, 2009 9:12 pm

Posada's homer would have smacked off the plexi-glass of old. Not that it matters tonight. That stuff was stupid.

Just remember that Cuddyer, Mauer, Young and Harris all own Andy Pettitte..I'd let him face Kubel and go immediately to Joba for the next two outs...Then Phil/Mo.

[641] Yep, the super model...she was stronger than new rope!

645 williamnyy23   ~  Oct 11, 2009 9:15 pm

This move I really don't like. Pettitte has been so good with the sole exception of when he allowed Span to distract him. I would ride him as long as possible. You really still can't be overly confident in Joba, so this strikes me as an unneccessary risk.

646 51cq24   ~  Oct 11, 2009 9:15 pm

[626] i still don't think that was a bad move considering aceves looked shaky the previous inning. defiitely the most questionable of all his moves so far this series though.

647 OldYanksFan   ~  Oct 11, 2009 9:15 pm

Pavano thru 7: 95-64
Pettitte thru 6.1: 81-58

Did Joe yank him too early?

648 Shaun P.   ~  Oct 11, 2009 9:16 pm

652 Evil Empire   ~  Oct 11, 2009 9:17 pm

[648] You're right Shaun P, the Marte call was the right call at the time. BUT, if the Yanks make the ALCD, they need to re-arrange things a bit and leave Marte off the roster.

653 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Oct 11, 2009 9:17 pm

Joba looks serious on the mound..could it be that maybe..he...should be a reliever...?

654 Chyll Will   ~  Oct 11, 2009 9:17 pm

[615] I really believe that Sterling goes into his singing tangents when the thought of "such things" cross his mind. At least when put in that perspective, it makes listening to him a little more interesting...

655 Yankee Fan in Boston   ~  Oct 11, 2009 9:17 pm

656 RIYank   ~  Oct 11, 2009 9:18 pm

[655] i noticed that too. i wonder if delmon's ever thrown something at him before.

661 RIYank   ~  Oct 11, 2009 9:19 pm

Right, in the post-season you want power pitching, because of all the swings and misses. In the regular season, obviously, slop is better.
The insights from this crew are mind-boggling.

662 williamnyy23   ~  Oct 11, 2009 9:19 pm

[652] I don't think the call to Marte is ever the right one. He shouldn't be on the roster and he shouldn't have been in that game (especially when you consider how well Mauer hits lefties).

663 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Oct 11, 2009 9:19 pm

I am rather amazed Girard has the balls to throw Joba back into the fire the way he has. But hey, good for him. This plate has an extra thck piece of black stripe on it. Stupid ump. And now Jeter Sucks. Wow.

773 Evil Empire   ~  Oct 11, 2009 9:36 pm

[768] Yeah, but Joe pitched him at the end of the season and he was okay, he pitched him in a low risk situation in game one, let him pitch a bit last game, and now this game was the first super high leverage situation (and there were already 2 outs).

774 Just Fair   ~  Oct 11, 2009 9:37 pm

Please make Punto look stupid. Anything that places him atop the 1st base bag is unacceptable.

[772] Alex, is Moe Greene getting a massage right now?

776 williamnyy23   ~  Oct 11, 2009 9:37 pm

Hughes is the right move, but if one was fully confident in Joba being all the way back, it might make sense to let him go out there for the 8th. I don't have that confidence yet.

also showed two blonde gals with a sign saying "Spank the Yanks"..I used up my filthy comment quota with the John & Suzyn crack so will leave this alone..

969 Shaun P.   ~  Oct 11, 2009 10:02 pm

[943] [944] I'm with you guys - let Damon go, happily pick up the draft pick(s). Re-sign Matsui, DH him for 110-120 games, use the other 40-50 for A-Rod/Jeter/Posada.

As for who plays LF, I say, hello Xavier Nady on a cheap one-year deal + occasional Melky/Gardner.

Damon is so bad with the glove, and his offense seems to be tied up to YS2.0 (who knows how long it will last), that I'd rather have a no-glove big bopper (Dunn), or a great glove/so-so hitter (Melky?) out there than him.

Not to fast forward too far ahead, but back to the Matsui versus Damon issue: One needs to keep in mind that the Yankees were pretty fortunate to get 130+ games fromm Hidecki this season. Even if he is a full-time DH again next season, there's a pretty good chance another knee injury will crop up.

Doesn't Gardenhire know that Matsui doesn't show a platoon split? Righty, lefty, doesn't really matter much at all . . .

1013 Evil Empire   ~  Oct 11, 2009 10:09 pm

[1001] You're correct, but Damon has less power, less ability to get on base, and less ability to hit left handers. Matsui would be cheaper and Damon would be far more likely to be an actual Type-A free agent; I think Matsui would retire if he's not resigned.

[1122] but they haven't been facing the yankee lineup much. i do think it will be a good series, but i definitely prefer them to the sox, even though i am admittedly a little scared. i think we match up well with them in a best of 7.

I don't think Marte should have been on the roster, and he damn sure shouldn't be on the ALCS roster. He sucks.

One more thing before we leave the Twins.

FUCK YOU CARL PAVANO!!!!!!!!!!

1254 williamnyy23   ~  Oct 11, 2009 10:37 pm

Man does it feel great to win a playoff series.

It's incredible how sad Darling and Caray are...the story isn't the Yankees winning, but the Twins plucky hearts being broken. Very funny (pun intended).

15 PS wins for Andy. let's get him some more!!!

i know everyone here hates pavano (i actually don't entirely agree with it as i think he probably did want to play for the team he grew up rooting for), but you gotta give him some credit for pitching a very good game.

I can't brag about the sweep. While maybe not by score, this series was very close. If not for baserunning gaffs we might still be playing. Considering no Morneau, Minny played their hearts out.

Our good news: Our starting pitching, ARod, Jeter and Mo.
Of some concern: The rest of our offense and Hughes.

We are going to have to hit MUCH better to beat the Angels.

1370 thelarmis   ~  Oct 12, 2009 12:21 am

jose contreras gave up the lead to the phils. struck out the 1st batter, walked the next two (ball 4 to the 2nd batter was a strike), then base hit.

5-4 Phils

[1369] Re: Hughes - this has been largely unsung but I agree. He suddenly seems shaky. I actually trust Joba more at this point. In fact, it's been a treat seeing Chamberlain with his good ol' "game face" on again, for the first time in what seems like forever. Fastballs 95, 96, 97 - well he hasn't seemed overpowering as yet but if he keeps looking real mean and throwing that hard maybe it'll come together again.

Oh and don't dog Mastsui and Posada - they've both come up big. Swisher had a pretty big hit, too. the only hitter that concerns me right now is Damon. I think there's a good chance he'll kick it into gear though. Here's hoping A Rod keeps it up in the ALCS, because he has saved the team's bacon thus far.

[1371] there's definitely a good chance damon kicks it into gear, but until he does, i'd seriously consider moving swisher up to the 2nd spot and moving damon down. he looks awful right now.
