Previewing the Angels…
Meanwhile, Tyler Kepner gives his first impressions of Target Field:
You cannot overstate how cool the massive old-fashioned Twins logo in center field is. The Minneapolis and St. Paul characters will share a neon handshake every time a Twin hits a homer. Like the Mets’ apple or Bernie Brewer’s slide or the Phillies’ giant Liberty Bell, this is a distinctive feature that will have special appeal to kids.
…As Peter Pascarelli of ESPN points out, it doesn’t remind you of anywhere else, and that’s a good thing. But there are some of the best elements of other parks, like the evergreen trees behind the center field fence (similar to Coors Field in Denver) and the nearby downtown skyline, like Pittsburgh, Baltimore and Cleveland.
Lester's having real control problems -- trouble hitting the Target, you might say.
Lester is lucky to get out of the second down only 3-0. He's thrown 58 pitches. The Twins might get deep into the Sox' pen, always nice in the first game of a series.
[1] you should keep your day job! and, if your day job can hire a jazz drummer to play quietly with brushes, and i am very very available! ; )
target field is really nice. i'd make a silly pun, but i don't have a 'day job' to keep. then again, my gig tomorrow is in the afternoon...
Thanks, I love my day job! My day job does sometimes hire musicians, but I have nothing to say in the matter :-(
Okay, if you won't make a pun, make a drummer joke. Or an oboe joke. I'd take a French horn joke, but they tend to be pretty rude, and we like to maintain decorum (except in game threads).
i'd love to, but i don't have much time. i'm trying to work on the solo section for my Todd Drew tribute, i have eat and get to the studio to teach by 7 'o clock!
alright, here's one:
what's the difference between a drummer and a mutual fund?
[5] i guess you can substitute mutual fund with "savings bond"
Oh, I know that one.
We'll just leave it for the other Banterers to ponder, shall we?
The Twins look good, and as you say Target is pretty, but I wonder how smart it is for them to have a roof-less park up there in the tundra. This year, no problem, but they'll have some snow-outs in the years to come...
Also, V-Mart can't throw anybody out. This will definitely drive RSN nuts.
[9] He, he. That gives me such glee. He's the big hole with their "run prevention" strategy, especially when it comes to running between first and second. Maybe they should try the backup catcher ... oh, wait.
[7] I dunno, but they've played at the Met before the Metrodome. And other teams in the area play in open air stadiums, so I guess it can't be all that bad.
Ortiz has 21 AB so far this season, and 11 K. So, Big Pop-Up is a better-than-average result for him now.
[11] The first live action I've seen of Target field was about an hour ago. It was of Ortiz waving pitifully at strike 3. Real nice.
Big Papi pops out. Sox about to lose.
Nothing like watching the Sox get drummed on a Yankee off day!
Lester is a cancer survivor and independently very likable, but now that he has a $30M contract with Boston, is it okay for me to root for him to suck? What if he sucked through 2013 and then exploded like a supernova of pitching goodness on some other team?
From ESPN:
David Ortiz has missed 44 percent of the time he's swung the bat this season -- the MLB average is 20 percent.
[15] 44%..wow...
Target Field looks pretty nice! Glad they didn't go the iden-ta-kit retro park route.
[14] He's recovered, you can cheer every pitch out the stirke zone and wish for him to have a bout of chanhoparkeria on days he starts against the Yanks.
I like Target Field, it is spot on. Twins hit the bulls-eye here.
[7] Last year (year before?) the Indians opened with three snowouts, wound up having to play at the Brewer's home.
