The rain she ain’t a-stoppin’. No telling if they are going to get this one in, but it don’t look likely…
I’m headed over to Two Boots in Grand Central to see Josh Wilker, Greg Prince and a Mess-o-Mets bloggers. Yee-haw.
[Photo Credit: No One Can Remeber the End]
I could kill a few slices of Two Boots right now...damn.
Never had it before but I'm looking forward to it...
Is it really raining that much?
It's been a slow, continual drizzle here in New Haven but it doesn't seem like enough to stop a major league game in a spiffy new stadium that must have state-of-the-art drainage.
DRRAAAAINNNNNAGE!!!!!!
[2] Don't get your hopes up. It's chain pizza for folks who grew up in other parts of the country.
[3] Been pouring in NJ all day, often very hard. It is soaked through outside. I'd be amazed if they play, but also pleased, I want some baseball tonight!
Yankees twitter says gates just opened, so I guess they'll try it.
I heard Gammons on Mike Francesa this evening on my way to work. I like PG -- I think he's insightful and down-to-Earth. Anywho, I was a little surpised at his answer after Francesa asked him if he thinks the Rays have enough stank to finish '10 with 90+ wins. He said he doesn't think they'll top the Yankees (assuming the Yanks aren't decimated by injuries), but he does think they'll make the postseason. Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't:
Rays don't finish ahead of NYY,
+ Rays do make the PS
= a non-PS finish for the Red Sox?
Poor Boston. When your own Peter Gammons turns on ya.
YES insists the game will go on.
I guess it's not supposed to rain heavily, just drizzle.
It's different where I am, upstate. They are predicting heavy rain. Like, a quarter inch in the next few hours.
there is a pretty hard raining going on uptown - hard to see this game happening and really hard to see it starting on time.
[5] [7] :)
[4] [8] :(
Seems to have eased up considerably in northern NJ, though it's still gray as hell. Merely seems not to be raining at the moment rather than clearing up.
YES weather guy said it won't clear up. It will be cold and drizzly all night. But as long as it's not raining heavily, they're gonna play ball.
Or so they claim...
Btw, Alex, your drip dropping up there makes me think of:
"If there were water 345
And no rock
If there were rock
And also water
And water
A spring 350
A pool among the rock
If there were the sound of water only
Not the cicada
And dry grass singing
But sound of water over a rock 355
Where the hermit-thrush sings in the pine trees
Drip drop drip drop drop drop drop
But there is no water"
(from The Waste Land)
Mmmmm, Eliot.
One of the few things on earth better than baseball.
[13] sometimes, yes, sometimes, no ...
mm. Talk of, songs about, rain drops dripping always make me think of Listen, the Snow is Falling by Yoko Ono. Though I don't think of her version but of Galaxie 500's cover. One of my all time favorites. Good thoughts.
Sounds like baseball is likely, though not guaranteed. I guess at least Lost is tonight. And the NBA draft lottery.
[13] I'd agree wholeheartedly except that I'm going to have to go with cob: sometimes yes, sometimes no.
Wishy-washy though it may be, it's the truth, Ruth.
Shooting for an 8:00 start.
tarp is off ... CC is on ... the bullpen mound, that is ...
Yankee trivia to pass some time?
Who has the most walk-off home runs in Yankee history and how many?
[17] excellent. thanks.
[19] I have no idea, none at all, but if you're going to put a gun to me head I'll have to say Mantle.
[21] no guns. yes, it's Mantle. 13 walk-off HRs total with 1 in the PS.
[19] I guess I'll say Ruth, on the theory that walk-offs should be proportional to homers in general... No particular reason to think that's true, but what the hell.
Oh.
Okay.
Hey, Greg Golson out, Melancon in.
[19] umm. oh boy. a-rod. just because i feel it must be a trick question.
[22] makes sense.
Suzyn said the club called up Melancon today. Dancin' Melancon, as thelarmis calls him...
[27] see [24].
d'oh! thanks, RIY
Wow, dig it, baseball!
[22] Cool!
so much going on tonight. election results coming in soon herein PA.
[32] Senate primary?
c'mon big guy. settle down now..
Huh.
Suddenly, things aren't going so well.
[33] senate, gov, and a special election.
Very nicely done. Tied V-Mart in knots.
phew. does CC look ok? i'm following on gameday.
alright alright alright... s'kickin.
[37] cool. i like the sound of that.
Hey all
Ugh
One pitch, one out on a feeble bouncer 6-3.
Could Derek just be injured somewhere?
[41] Evening, Mattpat.
Is it me or is Brett standing way off the plate tonight?
4.55 pitches per for Brett, to lead the team.
He's making up for Derek's effort.
[47] But imagine if both of them had grounded out on ten pitches? Beckett could throw four perfect innings and have to leave.
Hello all, hurrah for modern drainage!
Did he want a tee?
Hm.
Ortiz has wakened.
Sit down Adrian
I hate that pitch
I think it's kinda stupid that the defense can request an appeal but the offense can't. Although in this case, it worked out well for the Yanks. :)
[48] I know!
[49] DRAAAIIINAGGGGGE!
DRAINAGE!!!!
So, two hits, by the only two lefties. Weird.
Yay-Rod.
atta boy Alex!
Thanks for that, Buck-o!
[56] A lot of brainage went into this drainage!
So much for that vaunted Sox defense!
Run prevention, baby! Run prevention. What it's all about.
Did Cano just try to pull a low, outside pitch on a 3-1 count?
Pitching and Defense, yo!
Is Joshy going to throw another tantrum?
.800
Not feeling it here. No runs this inning.
What????
Frankie + RISP = ???
I mean, it wasn't bad, but it wasn't what I expected.
Let's go Marcus! Gotta get these runsies in...
[63] Sure looked like it. He is who he is. Hot-cold-hot-cold-hot-cold-hot-cold.
wish i was seeing josh wilker right now.
i'm just following the game online, per usual...
go yanks!!!
Yes.
Fear the Marcus. Fear him.
that intentional? looks like it on gameday
Now I want to know why Papelbon grabs his balls everytime someone hits a HR. That intrigues me more than the histrionics.
[67] Uh, oh ... walking Thames seems so improbable that I can't imagine runs *not* happening now ...
Is Jorgie dead or something?
Why is Miranda our DH?
unintentional intentional?
But he gets a seeing-eye single!
Yay!
[75] Fear the power of *me*!!!
[77] Most certainly.
keep this train goin' for awhile...
Miranda!
eat that shite, fuckers.
[74] Really? would you like to talk privately about it?
Cult, you are a contradictory force. You cannot imagine it not happening, and yet you don't feel it.
You are vast. You contain multitudes.
You are Brett Gardner.
Run prevention.
More Pitching and Defense!
Come on, Derek.
Even Flash is making fun of Run Prevention, Inc.
Run Pre Vent Shun!
If Theo were dead, he'd be turning over in his grave.
i'll take it.
more please!
Jeter really needs a double here.
[92] No. Single. Don't be greedy.
[67] nice reverse psychology. :)
[92] I'll take a simple single ...
[93] Not so worried about the runs right now. I want Derek to start to go on a tear
beckett is gonna start unraveling soon. tee hee
Not this time.
Sigh.
A better ab, at least.
damn. that was meat, yo!
Sigh.
Well, he did give us the 7-pitch at bat this time.
There gores ANOTHER million off Jeter's next contract.
I hate watching Jeter this year
Schilling used to constantly get Derek to chase that pitch.
Well, 2-0 isn't *nothing'...
"Good luck to her!"
Hah aha haha!!
Flash is kind of funny sometimes.
gameday is showing loads of pitches by CC right on the outside edge of the plate. Sometimes balls, sometimes strikes. Is the ump really that inconsistant, or is he going with the catcher's ablility to frame the pitch? Or is gameday jacked up?
Deep in my heart, I don't believe Marco Scutaro should ever be on base. Every time it happens, I think, "well, I guess these things do happen," but I don't really believe it.
[27] yeah man, i have to call him "dancin' melancon" 'coz i used to think his name was pronounced "melon cone". this helps me! : )
Bit of a lollypop from Teix.
[108] =)
[107] scutaro is off base now. i bet you feel better!
That was a fugly jacket
[106] Not sure. Only have half an eye on the set. He does seem to be a hitter's ump, as the booth guys observed.
Ooh. Not sure about that
Well, I'll take the wrong call there!
[111] I do.
The Yankees are World Champions, and Marco Scutaro is not on base. Order is restored to the world.
Ugh ... seem like a builpen night tonite ...
Let's go, Carsten!
[116] Who cries for the children?
[117] Thank God Boone Logan is still here.
[119] White Lion
: )
[121] I was going to guess: Armando Benitez.
But yours is good, too.
Nice job, CC.
Oh, that's a relief!
Good job, Carsten Charles.
CC is not as unbreakable as he looked earlier in the season.
I Love it when you call me Big Papa!
sweet!
and thank you [123/124] - i was staring at the computer screen w/ my fingers crossed. it *just* told me what happened....
hehe.. Suzyn was just talking about a meeting after yesterday's game. Closed door.. just Tito, Dice-K, and V-Mart (and various translators). Think of how much gets lost in translation there.
Whoa!
shit. 2 outs already? make him work!!!
[121] Really? Do they show up in the video?
[131] i don't remember, but i do remember the video for "Wait"
great tune!
Damn, he's down to .320.
Where'd he peak, like .404 or something?
And he's been declining steadily since.
Wasn't Ruth like 4-0 for the Yankees?
[133] .407 after game 21 on April 29th.
grienke again gives up 2 runs (7 innings) and will get a ND...
[134] 5-0 with a 5.52 era
damn CC. throw strikes, very large man!!! : /
CC just isn't doing well against the lefties. Strange.
[132] Actually, I don't think they do ... at least not credited. Ronnie James does though ...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iy6URlmeUpk
I'm glad that we called that pitch with 70 pitches on the game
You know it eats Kay up when Flash mentions Moose.
Well done, boys.
How soon before the RSN start chasing Beltre with pitch forks?
that's what we needed!
now, make quick work of hall.
CC on pace for 5 innings...
[140] RIP, RJD m/
[142] Did he just do it? Damn, I missed it. The other day Flash said something about being surprised Kay hasn't kept up with his good buddy Mike since his retirement or something like that.
It fucking slays me how he just wryly get it in anytime he can.
[144] some time after they chant Yankees Suck...
[144] They'll have to claw their way through Big Fatti first ...
[147] He mentioned "our good friend Mike Mussina" at least twice tonight
[142,147] what does mk have against the moose?
[142] [147] wait, why does mentioning Moose get under kay's skin?
[150] that's awesome! i miss Mikey Moose...
[144] [149] No, they're back in love with Big Papi again.
Big Papi, on the other hand, is still acting all hurt. He's obviously pleased that he's kind of shoving his success in his critics' faces. And the fact that he's happy while the Sox are in a dive is pissing some people off.
Still, they love him.
[151] what he said! oops
Isn't it that Moose didn't hide the fact that he found Kay kind of foolish and irritating?
[154] Fat Liar is Big Babi
i could NOT live where you do. i just couldn't...
[151] [152] They evidently had some kind of feud. Something to do with Kay being stood up by Moose on his show or refusing to come on his show or something like that? Not quite sure of the deets.
dammit. don't let fuckett settle in.
(too late...)
bobby cox just got ejected.
shocker.
You have the right to take pitches.
If you choose to swing at pitches, any swinging strike can, and will, be held against you.
Wow! How's about that!
MIRANDA WITH THE BIG BOOM STICK!
MIRANDA!!!
You have the right to boogie!
let's see what Sterling's call is...
[156] [158] thanks
oh, hell yeah!
Miranda Rights!
[153] I miss him alot. I hope he comes back to Old Timers Day again this year
Nice to see Juan Miranda getting his shot. He's hit so well ever since he was signed. I didn't think the Yanks were ever going to call him up.
[170] I know, he's a career Scrantonian.
[166] nothing, really. he said, "what an important decision Juan Miranda made to line the ball over the RF wall".
Wow, I just realized, it's a good thing he wasn't called up when Alberto Gonzales was here! They would not have gotten along.
[169] that'd be nice. i wish he kept pitching. wish he got to 300 and esp wish he got a ring w/ us. he's very borderline, but i sure hope he makes it to cooperstown.
i kick myself now for not talking to him when i had the chance. i taught music at his middle school and he was there to talk to the kids in the gym across the hall from the music room. he was an Oreo then and our rival...
Random Mike: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tu3sKFf_B6Y
I miss the old sour puss.
Especially the way he used to through up his arms in exasperation when his defense would let him down and then proceed to totally melt down.
Or the he'd get squeezed and then melt down.
Is the MLB.com front page not loading for anyone else?
[172] Yesterday he had no call for Thames. He said, "Marcus Thames... helps the Yankees win." Kind of deflating. (You can hear it in that nice little video with all four calls of that walk-off.)
Man, sat in front of the tv an hour ago and put on Yes. I assumed it was rained out. Just found the station and saw Miranda's homer. He's got big ears. : )
wow - wil nieves hit a homer off chris carpenter! : o
Our Win Expectancy is .89 now.
[177] Thames hit it into the River...Avenue!!!
[174] I really, really wanted him to stick around at get 300, and I hope he's eventually acknowledged as one of the premiere pitchers of the 90s.
[180] 86% on gamecast
Juan-Help Me-Randa.....Get me out of the park.
mccann shaking off a foul ball and the organist plays Zep's "Dazed and Confused". hilarious!
[181] Not bad, not bad.
Or how about some kind of London Bridge reference?
Ah, that's better. No Scutaros Allowed.
Scutari.
Oh, speaking of that view of the Stadium, I just remembered I had a dream about the old Stadium last night. I was there but not there and it was gone and I started crying.
Actually, Yankee Stadium, its environs and the platform of the Four train have been recurring images in my dreams for awhile now.
But the point is, I think I'm getting used to the new Stadium. It's beginning to seem kind of familiar, which I guess is a Testament to the fact that they designed it that way.
It's not so terrible, after all. Least on teevee.
[183] Hey, no kidding! I didn't know Gamecast had that.
Was that with one out? I got my number from Walkoffbalk's Win Exp finder.
[181] haha... actually, your Miranda Rights is dead on for sterling. I can hear him in my head...
"Ohhhh, Juan Miranda! He read him the Miranda Rights! ...and the Yankees take a THREE nothing lead".
"That's right, Jawn. and in the bawtom of the fawth, at that!"
"Screw you, Suzyn".
Dusty is getting all wet.
Soon he'll be Muddy.
Sit down Midget
Oh, Dusty!
God, I loved that. That was great. That made the whole evening for me.
AAAHHH HA HAH AH AH AH !!!
Oh, that was fucking beautiful!
[188] yes, w/ 1 out.
it's now 87% w/ 2 outs.
89% - siddown pony boy!!!
NICE inning, very large man. he/we needed that!
[179] What?!?!
[179] I saw that! Nats fans are as stunned as we are.
[189] Awesome!
We do that in my house, my sons and me. Somebody says something as John, then someone else answers as Suzyn, and then eventually one of them says something filthy or outrageous to the other. I don't know why that's so much fun. It never gets old.
[192] It really did!! And the ump so relished it, oh, that was just perfect. What dramatic timing he showed, too!
Between innings entertainment ...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RgjmxYL04V4
[187] i had a dream about my ex-g/f last night.
and then she texts me today about the shit sox / "spankees" game. she lives in enemy territory now. i oughtta spank her...
(did i just type that out loud?!)
[194] Interesting.
It must be based on a slightly different data set. They're converging, though: the Walkoffbalk set now says 90%.
I just got in from (also) attending the Josh Wilker event at Two Boots. Mr. Wilker is uber-talented and a nice guy.
[199] i have too much baseball news to read at other sites...
you're "tributing" to dio well, my friend!
[202] Welcome, Diane.
Hm, not at all surprised to hear that about Josh W.
I do miss the Toaster.
[202] you lucky dog, you!!!
Jeter is depressing to watch
another 7-pitch AB for jetes. another strikeout...
sigh
Joe West just texted. He says the rain delay thing is disgraceful.
Oh ... and I also ordered my Cervelli jersey .... should be here by the weekend.
Can they call the game now or do the rules say the home team has to bat through the 5th as well? Even if they are leading?
Brett, baby!
Oh, come on, you have to triple on that, dude.
Da Gritner!
Gardner makes the All-Star team, at least as a reserve, right?
[211] No, not really, I called 2 as soon as I saw the bounce. Nothing surprising there.
why isn't he on 3rd yet?
Do they play "Galvanize" by The Chemical Brothers when Gardner gets a hit? Because I thought I heard that on the TV and that would be awesome.
[210] they can call for the tarp anytime, of course. If it's past the middle of the 5th, and the home team is leading then it'll be official if it gets called.
[210] They could call it now, yes. But, it doesn't look like they're gonna.
[214] Yeah, I was really just kidding. Whenever the ball goes into the RF corner, you know, I feel Brett should automatically get third.
[215]
he'd pull a groin muscle on the wet track out there ...
[218] I understand. When the ball came off the the bat I thought "Triple!!!", but then I saw the bounce ...
Melky beats the Muts in the bottom of the 9th.
took a swinging bunt and an error, but it'll be line drive in the box score! ; )
NOW! you double steal, Coffee Joe!
Tater Time?
this inning is a bit better.
now, steal 3rd.
raining pretty hard?
Crud, he got a good crack at it, but right at Run Prevention.
Well hit, but nothing, because nobody was standing on 3rd to tag up ...
[222] i woulda loved that...
[224] Not really -- spraying, consistently, is how I'd describe it.
Heh.
Beckett almost fell over.
I was sure he was going to plug Rob for calling that time out.
100 pitches for Fuckett
Rrrrrrrripppppper.
better to be lucky than good!!!
Wow!
Off-balance Robbie hit that.
Nice.
That was all wrists.
Wooo!
ROBBIE!!!!
96% win exp
Thelarmis, it was a good double, but also some enjoyable bumbling in the OF. Missed the cut-off man, the back-up fumbled it. A-Rod could jog home.
fuckett's era back ovah 7...
[238] nice. thanking you!
Robbie is downright Vladlike.
[174, 182] I saw the Mike Mussina Yankeeography the other day. It was a good one. They brought up Moose's numbers as compared to Jim Palmer. Check it:
JP - 268-152, 521 GS, 2.86 ERA, 2212 Ks, 1.180 WHIP
MM - 270-153, 536 GS, 3.68 ERA, 2813 Ks, 1.192 WHIP
he might could get in.
Also: Beckett left apparently hurt. Gameday isn't mentioning that. Oh, now it does say "injury delay".
Does the AL West have any significance at all?
[239] over 7.00!!! Let me get a "Run Prevention" from the crowd, A-Men!!
[243] were his feelings hurt?
Interesting. More reporting for thelarmis:
Girardi is out there arguing that Del Carmen shouldn't be given the full "injury" warm-up time, because the trainer didn't come out to the mound to talk to Beckett. Only Farrell went out there. He called for the relief pitcher and then turned to the ump. You're supposed to call for the trainer.
Anyway, Del Carmen is obviously warmed up so it's all irrelevant.
[242] shit, i don't think i've seen moose's yankeeography, though i've seen the palmer comparison.
i have the Four 3dvd sets of yankeeographies. they never released volume 5, only a huge box set of a ton of them. i didn't buy it 'coz i have like 24 of 'em already on dvd. but i should buy the box set one of these years, if i find it cheap enough, which i probably can...
[243] my heart's broken...
[246] Oh yeah, you're not getting to watch either, right?
It looked like he landed funny on the mound, following through. Maybe hurt something in his side?
Oh, man! Good knock by Frankie, anyway.
[247] oh, wow. that is interesting. and very cool of joe to wake up and realize that. thanks for sharing!
[246] hilarious!
good ballgame between the halos and rangers...
[248] Mussina's is a brand new one, methinks. And they just updated Jeter's.
Very cool. Joe G. demanded that CC be given a little extra warm-up time, because the big dude had to wait extra time. And he got it.
And Brett very nearly lost that ball in the lights! Or the wind.
takahashi to start for the Muts against us Friday night. might be a good time for Javy to get another win. hopefully, he'll last more than 1/3rd of an inning and 4 pitches! ; )
And the Yankees are playing the game under protest!
[251] Game is being played under protest.
I can't remember the last time that happened.
Facken Youk.
[254] ...and the wind cried... BRETT.
[254] very cool indeed.
if CC has another quick inning, he can come out for the 7th. that'd be nice...
Ick
[260] uh....
ugly fuckin' bastid
So what are the possible outcomes for this protest?
[249] ah ok thanks.
[256] [257] oh that's kind of cool
[259] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rf-Mtd2A1DI
WTG Frankie!
[259] Aha! I knew I heard happiness staggering down the street!
[259] two syllables,yo, shouda gone with gard-ner there
=)
[263] You know, I don't know. If Boston wins they get a hearing with the commissioner or something, who is empowered to overturn it?
[259]
Gardner at Night., perhaps
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rl5TdBcAUts
[263] Realistically, or in principle?
Realistically, nothing.
In principle, if the Yanks lose the game could be replayed.
Why is the game under protest? Aren't we winning??
(Boulders rolling around in brain..very confused..)
[257] Didn't Girardi lodge a protest against the Marlins last year that everyone ridiculed? There was a pitching/lineup change that he found fishy, as I recall.
[272] That's what happens? Oh, but only replayed from that moment forth, right? Like with the Pine Tar Game?
[269] ahhh, it was a throw-back to last night's thread.
hi team - score looks nice.
[273] Joe G protested the umps allowing Del Carmen the extra warm-up time. Obviously, he withdraws the protest if we win!
But really, has anyone ever heard of a protest being upheld and a game being replayed?
Clippard trying to vulture another win.
[275] Right, replayed from the moment of the erroneous ruling if possible.
Oh, right, the pine tar game!
[279] i hope the gnats win!
another good AB for tims.
let's call him the River Dragon
[274] Maybe I vaguely remember that.
Evening, Ms. O.
By scoring a run, and only one run, the Sox only picked up about a percentage point of win expectancy. When you're down five, the outs become so valuable that a single run at the cost of three outs is barely an improvement.
By the same token, the base runner only gets us a fraction of a point -- so much already it's very hard to gain more.
how fucking low are those pitches? ESPN gamecast has them really low.
Thames had a nice postgame interview yesterday, didn't you folks think so? I liked it. Comfortable, modest, but not trite.
Nats fans call Tyler Clippard "Peaches." Because he comes in to "Peaches" by The Presidents of the United States of America.
[279] Can't tell you how much I love the term "to vulture." The more I hear it, the more delicious it becomes.
[283] evening weeping - i liked the waste land start to the night.
[285] glad i'm not the only one who follows espn gamecast round here...
[276] well, since I was involved in that last night, I *got* the throw back, was just helping out with the timing!
=)
[274] I just looked it up: there'd been a double switch, but the replaced player took the field in the next inning. That was the same game that CC came out in the second inning with an injury.
[286] Yeah, he seems like a really good guy.
[286] i agree
[289] heheh. I'm glad.
okay, captain. well placed double in the gap.
I can't believe nobody mentioned that (Del)Carmen was pitching to Miranda!
what are they saying about beckett in rsn riyank?
[297] hahaha
Oh, and speaking of Derek, can anyone (Diane?) tell me what Derek was hitting at the ebb of that 0-32 of his?
I mean, this is really getting out of hand.
He can't hit the broad side of a barn with a paddle right now.
nomaas has some really good/funny posts up right now!
Anything but a DP here, DJ ... ok?
thelarmis, the mlb.com Gameday is much better than EPSN's gamecast.
Kenny is pissed.
damn derek almost swung at that.
[298] You mean in general, the fan base? Or the announcers tonight?
[303] i know. i've tried it, but it didn't work on my computer, for some reason. then again, i have a new laptop now. i should try again! one of these games...
[306] more in general.
Good swing there, Derek.
This has nothing to do with "political correctness," you fool.
Hey, good plate discipline!
BIG FAT BOOYAH!
"peaches" now in line for the loss...
Wow!
He held up!
Way to go, Cap!
[300]
I was gonna look up the last year he was at .307 OBP in game 38 of the season.
I mistyped. Clippard trying to lose another game for the Nationals.
manny being manny.
walks the bases loaded.
let's go Gritner!!!
[300]
.161 /.247 /.195
[308] Oh, right.
I'd say the main sentiment is, "Oh, gawd, anothah faw yeahs of this at $17M per each?"
"Per each" is actually a weird Rhode Island expression. Bostonians don't say it.
[317] What? Really?
Wow, I don't remember that at all. What month was that? April?
April of 2004 was Jeter's 0-28 skid

Interesting.
Because it was Brett batting, they had the IF in. And as a result of that they got Miranda at home. Finally, some genuine run prevention!
Well, I suppose that's not unexpected from teh Gritner ... not exactly my 1st choice to have at the plate with the bases loaded ...
[312] Man on, Pujols at the plate. Could get ugly for Peaches the Win Vulture.
[300] Jetes was .333 on May 3rd, after game 23.
[319] April 20-28
[320] Cheers. Wow, that was 2004? God, six years ago. Feels like yesterday.
[318] ha, thanks.
interesting about the per each expression.
[322] Of course not. He's no Cervelli!
May is historically Jeter's worst month:
http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/gl.cgi?t=b&n1=jeterde01&year=2004#batting_gamelogs
ack.
More intra-inning entertainment
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BRW-qrEHZjE
[327] that is an interesting expression - per each.
nyyfan brought out a southern-ism before: might could.
i generally hate all southern things like that, esp "fixin'", but i like the "might could" and "might should"-s...
you hear/say that stuff growing up here, ms. o?
[331] i always think of the Metal God any time you call Robbie "Ripper"
[331] nah, hos about this?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sk6o4GWFIV8
funny from chad jennings:
UPDATE, 10:19 p.m.: Marc Carig has just announced he’s covering this game under protest until they turn on the hot chocolate machine. Call the league office!
mmm, hot chocolate. it's a/c weather here in hotlanta though...
[320] [324] dear lord. Jeter hit .300 or above at no point during the 2004 season. He came close by the end of the season, but that 0-fer April really hurt him.
[334] naw, how's about this!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NumV7gUKLz0
[336] I know, I was going to point that out too! At no point!
Astonishing, no?
CC's really comin' thru. 2 more easy outs here, big man!
wow, helton just hit his 1st homer of the season. only has 9 ribs...
[334] [337] You two are so cute.
[332] I once had a southern girlfriend that said she hadn't seen someone "in a minute"
I had absolutely no idea what he meant.
[337] Wimpy...I like my guitars with some giddyup, please!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=408EoZe70Rs
[341] *she meant.
[339] I know. I was worried, what with the elements and all.
Hey, Thames! That ball landed right in his glove!
Ah.
Very nice. So, turns out to be an A-level game for CC.
Or is it only A- if he doesn't go 8 innings?
[329] I'll take a bad may over just about any other month, actually.
[340] i gotta go w/ Cult on this. esp that last one. you can't beat old Maiden. you just can't!!!
[341] i don't know that that's southern. i say it all the time. then again, i got it from a bass player from atlanta. i thought it was a 'musician thang'. i say that all the time though - "minute" to mean "awhile". i guess it's the opposite of a "new york minute"!
very very nice, CC!!!
112 pitches thru 7.
joba-mo, sweep the shit sox.
[343] good catch! gold glove!
[338] yeah. especially when you consider he ended the season at .297, finished 13th in the MVP voting, and played on a team that was an inning away from the WS. Twice. ugh.
[345] that river hasn't run dry yet!
My intelligent alternative to Kate Smith
http://www.badgerbadgerbadger.com/
Great job by CC showing Josh Beckett what a real ace looks like.
Stat-padding.
Nice fucking hit, Al.
[332] hey thelarmis - yeah heard that stuff all the time growing up.
my dad (who is from detroit) didn't really like us using those expressions - so i don't think i really used them that much.
[355] he's creeping up to .300
i want him to steal 1 more damn base. then, he'll have 300 of those, thusly becoming the 7th man to reach 300-300 for his career. my favorite "exclusive" baseball club!!!
I really think part of Cano's problems stem from having very little batting behind him. It doesn't seem like he is getting as many strikes, and he may also be pressing a little because he realizes that the bottom of the lineup is compromised.
[357] that makes sense. and my mom, who's from brooklyn and is an english teacher, was the grammar police. still is! : )
did you go see Wilker tonight?!
What the?
Frankie's off tonight, huh?
[342] Oh, please, that's not even close to the best that Sonny had to offer.
And don't even get me started on what Jimi had ...
[361]
sigh .... I may have to return my jersey.
however, the Yanks are 13-3 in games he starts ...
peaches did indeed get the loss. he's 7-3 outta the pen...
kenny is really yukking it up at mk's nonsense tonight.
[360] nah - would have liked to go, but i had a basketball game.
Thelarmis and Ms. Oct., those "double modals" are found not only in the Southern US (and southern midlands) but also in Scots and some northern England dialects?
True fact!
[342] OK Jazz - careful calling the twin axe attack of dave murray and adrian smith "wimpy". even joking around, that's not only disrespectful, but the absolute farthest thing from the truth! those guys are *amazing*!!!
[362] Oh, we can go deeper...this is my favprite..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mz4Se8owymc&feature=PlayList&p=E75E6FA824F89695&playnext_from=PL&playnext=1&index=5
[359] He lacks protection. That sounds eminently plausible, actually. Nice hypothesis.
[366] "double modal" - i like that. almost like polytonality! : )
when I went off to college (from NJ to TX), I discovered a lot of little nuances in every-day language. It was highly entertaining. It was also entertaining when it snowed about 3 mm and they closed school (and really, the whole damn town).
Mar-co.
I'm intrigued by the Stanton story, but can't watch Russ Salzberg.
I just can't
[366] interesting - scotland and northern england are probably where many people from the south's ancestors are from.
[363] you aren't jinxing frankie b are you?
after diane made fun of me - i am curious to know if anyone here around my age (the same as our 3b) watched the hair bear bunch as a kid?
[370] Yes!
Only it was polyrhythm we were speaking of .
Huh, Wordpress doesn't like "polyrhythm".
[367] We'll have to truce: I won't diss metal but you got to show some love for Public Enemy! :)
[371] Live a couple years in DC, and was stunned to see how badly snow just crippled the city. And its not like it was Texas. It was a city that gets snow fairly regularly.
put him away, jobs...
[366] "Double modals." Very nice.
[368] Well, that *is* amusing ... if only because *that* was the *exact* clip I was going to attach to my last post to show where Sonny *could* go!
=)
Instead, I'll just throw some Eddie Hazel at you
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LoULS9zBRYE
[374] you mean the Care Bears? No, never. Only the Smurfs.
That is some stretch.
He's so beautiful over there, especially for a guy of his size.
[376] i liked PE w/ Anthrax. but i like REAL instruments played by REAL musicians! : )
No, dammit.
He is not allowed on base. A-Rod gets one large demerit.
goddamn it, alex.
someone in rhode island is NOT very happy right now...
[375] I love polyrhythm and wordpress can go fuck its mother.
[381] jesus christ no - not the care bears :}
the hair bear bunch:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KQYO86GCViM
Oh Jesus
[385] He's less happy now.
Come on, Joba, it's time. Kill.
[375] word press didn't like "polytonality" either, but it's a word. no space. same w/ polyrhthm. hell, i make a living playing/teaching/composing polyrhythms! : )
[380] Or maybe some Santana AND McLaughlin
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8BeRMDw4JAE
Don't make me go all Milton Berle on you, I *will* pull out more than you can handle ...
[374] Hehehehhehehe.
I don't recall that. I do recall the Care Bears, though. BUt you're talking something else, eh?
Ugh.
If Joba could play a position, I'd have Mo come pitch to the next three batters. Then Joba could take the ninth.
Don't like this.
[374] i've got 6 months on our SS. never heard of the hair bear bunch though. sorry.
Oh no.
I'm starting to feel ill.
The Yankees really have no bullpen. It's a huge problem.
Hoooooooo boy.
Now I'm not having fun at all, and I'm thinking back to all those RISP we've left tonight.
[387] haha.. never seen it before. But it looks hilarious. Reminds me of Deputy Dog.
C'mon, Joba! GET IT TOGETHER!
Oh fer FUCK'S sake, Joba.
GAAAAAAAH!
Remember when Joba was good at stuff?
I don't like this.
I don't like this.
damn jd drew.
Where's that Joba we saw last week?
Okay.
Deep breath.
Just get outs. Don't worry about the base runners.
Banana Splits anyone?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZL2WeRHqqXo&feature=related
OH, FOR FUCK'S SAKE!
[371] i went from NY to PA, so the snow thing was the same. just the threat of snow shuts down Atlanta. no one's ever even heard of "snow tires" round here!
i HATED the differences in how people spoke, when i first got to PA. all statements sounded like questions, syllables were stressed in weird places - INsurance, THANKSgiving - and everyone asked where things were "at". yuck! i still hate that one the most. apparently, it's really widespread though. : /
The worst part is, on occasion when he does actually get ahead, we have to start with the waste pitches. And with Joba, its usually at least two waste pitches.
goddamn motherfuck.
get it together, joba!!! : /
The problem with Joba is he comes in throwing sliders and nibbling at corners. A good late inning reliever simply pounds the strike zone. Joba is either not willing or not capable of doing that.
fuckity fuck fuck
The second he hit that I knew it would fall in.
Motherfucker.
fuckfuckfuck.
"Joba" ... Native American for "Mediocre".
The Yankees really ruined this guy.
i figured ugly would tie the game, so this is better, i suppose...
Sigh.
Outs. Please? I think we can manage to win this if we get out of the inning with a lead.
I hope Mariano is warming because Joba is not getting out of this inning with the lead.
If I see Boone Logan I'm turning the game off/
Why?
Is Eiland on the bench, or did he go to the bathroom?
Yeah, now he's gun-shy.
Go get him, Joba. Attack.
[414] Texas 2008 really ruined this guy ...
remember, this started w/ an A-Rod error...
3-0.
Why?
[420] He's probably getting the fucking binder.
c'mon joba.
[414] I wouldn't blame the Yankees...I just don't think he is that good.
[391] Oh you can drop some Eddie Hazel and then Johnny Mac w/ Carlos..but I can easily out Milton you with THIS:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E-DXwxKlE2I
wait, are we going to lose now???
how come all the runs are earned? shouldn't scutaro be unearned?
win ex down to 58%
strikes, joba. strikes!!!
Ok, that's one.
Oh, lord in heaven. V-Mart, thank you.
That was ball four, no doubt about it.
[428] It's looking that way.
couldn't get the lead runner?
STRIKES, YOU FUCKER!
[422] There was still hope before they started screwing with him last year.
Makes no sense to have Joba pitch to Ortiz.
This is bad. He isn't coming close to strikes.
Fucking agony.
DON'T IBB this fucker!
[435] They only had to screw with him because he was ineffective for the most part.
"And a derisive cheer from the crowd!"
Wow, he didn't say it!
[436] Well, if you call this "pitching to Ortiz"...
Mike Lowell hit Joba hard when Joba was good. I shutter to think what he may do tonight.
[433] Nah. Chopper in the hole.
[422] i'll never forget watching that injury unfold. i was on stage, my parents were visiting. the girl i was seeing was there w/ them watching me. we were swingin' on stage and the game was on. and all of a sudden i started going, "oh no. oh shit. we're done. there goes our season. no way we're getting to the postseason." etc.
don't worry, i never missed a beat! : )
[436] you mean change pitchers or IBB Ortiz?
[440] http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/gl.cgi?n1=chambjo03&t=p&year=2009&share=2.65#62-84-sum:pitching_gamelogs
Those aren't bad numbers for a young starter
this AB's not gonna end well, is it...
Obviously.
go fuck yourself joba.
Well, there you go.
I don't know how that didn't go out.
I was sure that was gone.
Ohhhhh.
Of course.
Poor CC, no decision again! Oy...
How the hell can you let him pitch to Oritz? Why exactly do the Yankees pay Girardi to do?
Ortiz lollygagging. Bench him!
Not ANOTHER fucking game like this ...
Well, he did get another out...
thankfully that fat ass got himself thrown out at 2nd.
Now what happens?
fucking brutal.
this is awful.
so stupid. How did Thames not get to it? I'm on a radio broadcast here...
And another.
Jeez. If they could have got the lead runner on the V-Mart ground out, we would have survived this with the lead.
Okay, well, gonna have to score now.
Well fucking done, Mr. Chamberlain.
why is it always like this with these teams. i really wish they'd just contract the shit sox. i fucking hate them.
[462] was hit all the way to the wall - ain't no way thames was getting it.
[417] hate to see it come true. dammit.
i still don't understand why all the runs were earned if the lead runner was on board due to an error. what am i missing?
Playing like this wont cut it against the Rays.
Good lord. Folks, not only did I turn off my computer but I flossed, for the love of god.
[468] Yeah, that must be a mistake. Only three of the runs are earned.
Looks like Girardi just blew his chance to use Nick Swisher. What a surprise.
Gameday says only 3 of Joba's 4 runs are earned.
What I'd like to know is why Chamberlain is so inconsistent. One day his stuff is old-school Joba, overpowering. The next, he's pitching like he's a starter again.
dammit to hell. I'm going to DD for a coffee. I'll continue to listen in my car. See y'all in a bit.
I could see Randy getting a hit here. It's a fair match-up, him against Okie.
In a few years people are going to be talking about how Joba Chamberlain somehow became Brian Bruney. That will become a cautionary tale.
[474] Probably because he is just your typical reliever with a big arm.
[473] ah, gamecast finally caught up. 3 ER
[477] Oh, dear Lord. What a nightmare.
Randy Winn is useless.
So what, this is going to go fifteen, sixteen?
Hm. That called strike was a ball.
Okay, Jeets, let's do something.
Does a win here erase last night for the Red Sox? I'd guess so.
[481] What is it he allegedly does well?
[484] I think so...but what it really does is put the Rays on the fast track to take command of this division.
[478] Thing is, even his arm's "bigness" is inconsistent. His fieriest fastball tonight was 94, I think, but I saw quite a few at 92 mph.
[480] "Remember when the Yankees thought the best way to develop a young starter was to keep the date of his next start a secret from him?"
Holy Christ, Jeter got a hit.
Nice job, Derek.
gapper, gritner.
c'mon buddy, do it!!!
I think the cameraman knows better how to manage than Girardi, if that shot of Swisher just now is as meaningful as I make it out to be.
Send him?
Good job.
Hm. If we don't score, who pitches the ninth? Mo?
[487] Didn't notice the velocity, but his real problem is he doesn't throw enough strikes. Joba is not the Yankees closer of the future. In fact, I don't really know what he is.
[488] Hahhahhahhahahahahah.
[486] I just don't want the Red Sox to make a push and then the Yanks have to start worrying about the wild card too.
[493] Yes, send him.
but I can easily out Milton you with THIS
Well, no, now I think we're talking past ourselves
As expansive as Yoshihide's explorations in tone are in that clip there's nothing even remotely resembling throughput or thematic development.
Meer atonality is neither shocking or "out there", it's the Kyle Farnsworth of guitar playing ....
[496] It would be funnier if it wasn't true.
[495] A confused young man, is what he is.
who the fuck are the 4 vmart threw out - i'd hate to be on that list.
[492] Honestly, not using Swisher was a ridiculous blunder. There is no justification for it.
Redemption time, Teix.
good job, grit.
i'd love a Tex message right here!!!
Joba couldn't - or wouldn't - throw strikes but maybe he would have been more disposed to do so if he had a 95 mph heater with an 88 mph slider like he did just a few days ago.
[504] Yep...not scoring with the bases loaded has really come back to bite them.
[506] I know what you mean, but I think tonight he just didn't have command.
[495] Indeed. His stuff looked just fine. He just didn't go at people.
My man Brett. Nice job, Brett.
Come on, fucking Teix, please.
Please.
Nice and easy, ok? Just punch it up the middle. No need to foul out or tap meekly to second because you're swinging for the Grand Concourse; Derek can score on a measly old single and then we turn it over to Mo, ok?
Sound like a plan?
[499] "Kyle Farnsworth of guitar playing"..Brilliant!!
Stepped out for a minute, tie game....sigh...
[506] True, but when you are up 5-1, there is no reason to go 3-2 on Marco Scutaro leading off the inning. Even if he had throw the ball underhanded, you have to aim right for the middle.
I think it's finally time for me to think positive when Gardner's at the plate. That swing compels me to do otherwise, but dammit ... mind over matter!!
Hm, I like this match-up for us. Teix vs. Bard.
[502] I'd almost bet money that Cano is on that list. Every once in a while he decides he's fast and winds up being the first guy such and such a catcher has thrown out since the Ford Administration.
Turn. One. Around. Tex.
Actually Tex flied out trying to jack one last night. I hope he doesn't do that again.
They should walk Teix. You know, to set up the platoon match-up the way they want it.
ugh - not cool.
however, mk gets to talk about pie again.
FUUUUUUUUCK!!!!
Whoops, too late.
So, who pitches the ninth? It should be Mo.
So, what do the Yankees do about this bullpen? Right now, they have on reliable reliever.
And it is.
and the celts are up 2-0 going back home - damnit to hell.
[522] Give Melancon a try, first step.
[521] The problem with using Mo in the 9th is if the Yankees don't score in the bottom, Robertson has to face the top of the order in the 10th. In other words, it's probably game over if the Yankees don't score in their half.
God I don't want another Celtics/Lakers NBA Final. Who the **** can I possibly root for? No-one, I tell you!
So I guess it's up to Alex again, eh?
A-Rod leads off the bottom of the ninth. I bet he walks.
[526] Not so. Mo can pitch a second inning.
[528] always.
[530] Very funny.
[527] i know - the thought of that again is really disturbing.
Oh, right, I forgot that Lowell can play the outfield.
Nice fucking play, Alex.
[526] unless he has a stress free 1-2-3 w/ very few pitches thrown...
[529] then steals 2nd. his 300th! : )
[534] are you serious?
and jesus christ fucking scutaro?!?
[536] If Mo really can pitch 2 innings, then why the hell wasn't he in the game after the Youkilis hit?
Wait, where was that pitch?
Did Mo piss off the umpires union?
[535] an inning too late.
was ball 2 really a strike?
Mariano just missed location by the entire width of the plate...not good.
And he missed his spot again...I don't have a good feeling about this.
Darnell McDonald? You gotta be kidding me.
jesus christ.
please get the DP now...
Oh I remember that loss versus the A's. That was rough.
holy fucking shit.
Good god almighty.
I
am
going
to
throw
up
cano has to get that - you can't let thames take anything.
Marco fucking Scutaro.
That looks spectacularly bad in slow mo
If you play Thames in the outfield you are going to get burned. That's not Thames fault...it's the manager who puts him there.
Dirty water!
why the fuck isn't swisher in there?!?!?! : /
Thames is a nice person but he has no business playing the outfield in the major leagues.
Keep in mind everyone....Nick Swisher is able to play.
[554] Agreed.
Marcus isn't good at the catching part. He's good at the hitting part.
well at least the pony is out.
[551] I know.
All those times I'd get furious at Abreu for not calling Cano off and now Cano decides to let Thames take it?
Wtf?
Wait. Why isn't Drew in there, exactly?
So Mo will be unable to pitch another inning right? He's at 16 with two outs....
So, the good news: the top of the order will not be up in the tenth, even if we get there!
i do NOT wanna see ugly up this inning.
or again in this game...
Ok, Mo, here we go...
[564] At this point, I think we'll have to settle for just getting out of this inning.
[563] got hurt running the bases on his last hit.
[510] keepin' it coming with love!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oTULia5GMJM
As The D would say, this is a tribute ...
Suck my fucking dick, ump.
ooooh. The ump hates Mariano I guess
what does this ump want?
[564] doubt it, he's already at 23...minimum.
The Thames giveth and the Thames giveth away.
Where the hell was Winn playing?
really? REALLY???
FUCK!?!?!KLFASAUILAXMKL?LJK>SD
fuck a goat in the ass.
Ugh.
Damn.
There are no words for this.
i don't fuckin' believe it. : /
all of a sudden Mo's era is 3
[578] yeah ms october, you tell 'em.
Holy Goddamn HELL, whereTF was Winn positioned on that?!?!?!?
GAHFUCKGERRRBAHHHHHATE.
[580] i think ms. o has some good ones.
see [578]
If I am Joe Madden, I am grinning from ear-to-ear because the Rays have the chance to really create some distance.
Between the depleted lineup, diminished bullpen and an awful manager, the Yankees are not going to be able to keep up with the Rays.
Can't blame Rodriguez too much for the the 8th. I mean there were no outs, no men on. Four runs scored. Give me a break.
[580} I thought [578] were pretty good words.
i can't believe this is happening. i mean, i can, but i don't want to. i thought we were past this w/ this godforsaken team. i wish it rained...
[582] Can't be. Those runs were unearned.
I guess they had Winn played in in case of a play at the plate, right? Too bad.
should Po pinch hit for brains?
[587] No, that's not on Alex. Not at all.
Okay, well, Alex has to get on!
But now I do not believe he'll walk...
The only player who you can really blame is Joba....his performance was pitiful.
Otherwise, you can place the blame squarely on Girardi, who made no fewer than 3 costly blunders in the last inning of this game.
Why did Thames drop that baseball?
[590] maybe they haven't fixed it yet. says 2 ER and now his era is at 2.92. huh. it'll prolly change again in a minute...
yup - 1.46 no ER...
still...FUCK!!!
[592] depends on what kind of hit they need. If there's someone in scoring position, definitely not.
What a fucking embarrassment.
I'm annoyed by the loss if it happens, but it't not the end of the world. Honestly as william implies, the implications vis a vis the Rays are a bigger deal than losing a sloppy game to a team 8 games back.
yeah, tims didn't help matters...
how did the coaching staff not see winn was so shallow and move him back?
Time for more smoke and mirrors. This is not the well oiled machine as it appears by the record.
[596] Because he's a very bad outfielder.
Yeah a loss here is on Joba's shoulders. Thames never should have been in a position to make such an important error.
[602] Really, it's not a bad spot to play. So many hits against Mo drop shallow in the outfield.
Was Randy Winn coming in for a mound conference? Whiskey tango foxtrot!?
Papelbon!
There's hope.
That was funny
[606] yeah good point.
thank god for run prevention!!
Can't anybody here play this game?
[602] I gotta think he was there because they wanted him there. They always position the OFers.
Joe Madden smiles some more.
Okay, good start.
Now Rob.
This is like watching little league.
It ain't even Marco Scatter-throw ... jeez.
Okay let's do this Cano. don't make an out
well shoot. RISP ghosts dead for Cano? Certainly brains has no RISP concerns.
This has been a really bad couple days
oh fuck. was listening in the car. s'gotta be another walk-off.
Steal?
[619] Three days...they blew the Sunday game too.
Let Papelbon hang himself, Robbie. Be discerning!
Ah, yes.
That shouldn't have been indifference. That's a big base -- removes the DP.
Good job, Robbie.
Now keep your head about you and stay back...
well, cool on 2nd, but ACK on the D.I. i want his 300th bag already!
fuck you mk - paplebonian
Papelbonian????? (ugh)
[622] I was counting that game
Exciting though, right? Like jousting in the dark. In baseball you never can tell...
yipee!!!!!!!!
this would be a kick in the gut if we don't tie it
HO!!!!!!
HOLY FUCK@@@!
FROSTY!!
Do you bunt with Cervelli?
I say no because I have no faith in Thames coming through again.
Oh boy.
Paps hears the hoofbeats....
Wrists again, just like his other double.
Could Cervelli actually come through again here? I'm guessing no. No offense to him - he's my guy! - but it just seems like a bridge to far, finally.
YESSSSS!!!!
The title of the post that started this thread is awesome: drip drop drip.
okay okay okay. you bastards make me throw up in my mouth all week, but let's keep the train rollin!
We got this.
[634] DEFINITELY NO.
That would be playing for the tie. you have to be going for the W here.
I say bunt. The odds are against him.
[635] he is hearing my little pony?
Can Posada pinch hit for anyone?
[627] Oh, God, did he say that again?
Oh God.
Cano, get your HEAD OUT OF YOUR ASS
Robbie, get your head out of your ass!
only cano would almost get thrown out at 2nd
Girardi simply has no clue.
Uh, Robbie, that was *way* too close.
[648] Jinx.
[651] Maybe Swish will pinch hit
I kind of don't want him to bunt now
IN
THE
AIR
I luv this kid
did your job frankie b. whether it was the right job is another story - but he did his part.
You're a rockstar, Brains.
But I think he should have been swinging.
(Not a classic)
You simply can not give Papelbon an out when he is struggling. The Yankees lose more often because of their manager than any other reason.
[653] And how!
Here's hoping Thames has settled down enough to just get that run in. No need to hit it out again, Marcus
[644] Louder. And more ominous.
tims better tie this mofo up. or better!!!
I have a really bad feeling
Thames is going to strikeout.
Trying to hit it out
Pie for Thames is a silly thing to call, back-to-back.
But I'm gonna go crazy and CALL JUST THAT.
COMING ... NOW!
Is there really no one that can hit for Miranda?
Thames has too much emotion now...not what he needs.
[650] Well, and Jorgie, of course.
Brains is leading all of baseball in RISP for whatever reason defying cause, and they get him to bunt to get some guy named Winn up to the plate. That is not the right choice.
Not good
FUCK.
For gods sake wait for a good pitch.
Thames needs to cool it. He's trying wayyyyy too hard
You could see this K coming from a mile away...so damn frustrating.
Thames, Winn, whatever.
I thought he was going to swing there.
[672] Yeah, although it's Thames, not Winn. :-)
Brains should have been swinging.
[677] Which K, perchance?
Okay.
IN THE AIR.
NO DOUBLE PLAY.
Attaboy.
Now steal!
I can't believe he gathered himself enough to walk there. good job.
But we MUST avoid the DP
no dp, no dp, no dp.
shit, how bout a wild pitch/passed ball...
FUCKING RUN.
[681] yup. And now what. Miranda wins the game?
Ok, so now what?
Miranda.
Should he strike out to stay out of the dp and give Derek a chance? Derek did have a nice hit his last ab.
Well, no pie for Thames, but no K either ...
Time to read the Sox their Rights ... their MIRANDA RIGHTS!
Incredible break...but this only hghlights the folly. Miranda now has to come through. And if not he, then Winn.
Bunting Cervelli really was incredibly stupid.
No Po.
He must not be feeling good after all.
juan had a walkoff hit last season. do it again!
Why are they not sending Pena immediately???
[690] hehe... love it.
runrunrunrunrunrunrun
RUN
Send. The. Runner. NOWWWWWWW
He has to steal! Victor won't throw!
[691] Agh, fucking Winn, not Derek.
RUN GOD DAMNIT
god damnit
What a disaster
I feel so ill.
Jesus fucking christ.
How did Cano not break? What the fuck was that? Stupidity reigns on this team.
A fly ball is all that was needed.
Now we have to rely on Randy Winn.
c'mon randy
Winn's best chance is a bunt.
Come on.
Uh.
Winn? Not Po? Not Swish?
useless.
pinch stand there. : /
[706] Its more important to make the other team *think* we might run then to actually do it.
why PR if you don't send him? That coulda been a harder hit ball and a GIDP. fuckers.
That was your pitch, Randy.
Right by him.
[710] No way. Must swing.
Aww man, this is nuts. I don't have a lot of faith in Randy Winn here, but then again, I just want to win this game to erase its ugliness.
dfgthfghjjhgt
I really wish the Yankees had a competent manager.
i don't even have any hope left...
Maybe Winn can work a walk here.
just a single...
Papelbon isn't throwing hard, and the ball has little movement.
Come on, Randy!
Fucking torture.
[718] Why? Have been watching Winn swing?
Papelbon should just throw it down the middle. I don't think Winn is likely to catch up with it.
Just stand there, dude. Papsmear is just chucking balls.
oh man full count
So is Posada even alive? What is going on with this team's roster right now?
I gotta say, I am having fun. At least they are scaring the bejeesus out of em, even if we don't catch up here.
If Jerry Manuel managed a game like this tonight, Minaya would finally fire him.
[731] I asked precisely that question earlier. Is the man dead?
[706] because he did ... and if he actually carried on towards the plate, the PITCHER, who fielded the ball, would have thown him out by 30 feet.
Other than that, running would have been a GREAT decision!
So pap has 26 pitches tonight and about that many last night. He getting tired yet?
[735] Or, it could have been an errant throw. Instead, they have no chance to score.
ah fuck it.
Of course.
Ah. That K.
THAT FUCKING SUCKED.
absolute fucking torture.
shits alive. Worthless.
argyle bargle
night folks
Winn had no chance there.
Ohhhhhhh.
Not with a bang, but with a whimper.
Ah well.
Ugly, thrilling game.
Bring on the Rays!
Way to manage that win into a loss Joe.
[737] Absolutely ... and let's not rule out the chances of a meteor strike either, these things *do* happen, however unlikely ...
I wouldn't say it was a whimper. If they'd gone down in order, yeah - but they scored and were soooo close! It makes it easier to swallow, for me anyway.
JAY-sus KEErist! I went to work during the 7th thinking this one was in the bag. WTF happened?
Is anyone else starting to get completely fucking sick of Joba?
Too bad Mo gets the L. That honor should go to Joba.
Anyway nice try in the bottom of the 9th. I'll take that over a 1-2-3 inning any day.
[747] I'm with ya there, William. Poor poor managing. Such a waste.
And with that, we return to [12] The Waste Land. That's the 1st base dugout tonight. Or the bullpen. Whatever.
Fuck it dude. Let's go bowling.
[748] If Cano is going on contact, Papelbon has to snag that ball, spin and throw a strike. That's far from a meteor striking. In fact, the chances of that happening were better than Winn getting a hit.
That was just brutal.
I feel like I did during that game when they stole home against us a couple years ago. Toronto, was it?
was ball four that winn swung at to strike out. That's not good.
[750] Joba was awful and then Girardi managed like he was drunk.
[750] Joba implosion, the return of JoeyJoeJoe Shabadoo Jr in the dugout, missed chance by Cano at 3B (he had to run there!)
I feel pretty good but I'd rather be missing the sleep due to an awesome win. Not to be. So it goes.
[756] Again, don't play the bad player...blame the manager who puts him in a situation to fail.
[757] Or like a patient aetherized upon a table.
[754] Yep, sure, I'm scoring that one out with plenty to spare.
But you keep plucking that chicken, know what I mean?
[760] Don't blame.
[758] plus a couple dropped balls. dropped balls suck
[750] Everyone is leaving out Thames making a gargantuan error in left field that allowed two runs to score.
And to elaborate, it's always plain as the nose on his face when he doesn't have his best stuff, as his body language is just AWFUL every time when that's the case, and you just know he's going to be terrible. I'm starting to think he is a mental weakling.
I'm just disgusted. I just finished my last law school final and I had to WADE THROUGH MOTHERFUCKING BODIES, JOBA YOU *&^$##@ $#@!! to somehow finish the test this morning.
But I'm disgusted because on a night when CC just guts and savvies his way through seven innings, Joba bitches out.
Am I just way over-tired and cranky?
Seriously, though, this steaming plate of shit was not the reward I was looking forward to tonight after a year of pure freaking hell. *^$@!.
[762] Pitchers never make poor throws on plays like that...it was much better to hope that Winn would get a hit. How'd that wind up working?
[765] see [764]
[753] hilarious! i'm sure winn will bowl a lot of strikes!!!
That last pitch to Winn wasn't an obvious ball. It was a good pitch. A pitch other some players could probably have hit, but Randy Winn is who he is: Randy Winn.
[765] I include in the Girardi category. Having him out there was stupidity, albeit it typical Girardi.
Just a miserable night. Watching the post game would just continue the torture [742]. The Yanks had better take at least one from the Rays. There are a lot of shortcomings exposed since Sunday. Hats off to CC, and we'll get 'em tomorrow.
[766] That's a sad story.
I think you're probably right about Joba, if that makes you feel any better.
[770] Exactly...when your game strategy makes it likely that Randy Winn will stand between victory and defeat, well, you need to blame the strategy before you blame Winn.
[770] Granted, an ok pitch, about two inches outside. 94 mph, but with less movement than any other pitches in the at bat.
http://www.brooksbaseball.net/pfxVB/pfx.php?s_type=3&sp_type=1&batterX=85&month=05&day=18&game=gid_2010_05_18_bosmlb_nyamlb_1%2F&year=2010&pitchSel=449097&prevGame=gid_2010_05_18_bosmlb_nyamlb_1%2F
Golson sure would've come in handy to play right during the late innings. I don't get the rationale behind having essentially a one-man bench in Ramiro Pena and 13 pitchers. It really bit them in the ass today. They are far too concerned about having someone around to eat innings in case a starter shits the bed and not nearly concerned enough about having nobody available to help from the bench.
[766] Congrats on getting to the other end. Too bad Joba couldn't.
Just a sloppy game all around. Joba implosion...A-Rod error...Thames the worst OFer in existence...and a lot of other maddening things.
[773] Not so sad, as I did make it out bloody, but breathing...
Still, Joba's starting to look an awful lot like a front runner, the way I always used to say that Shaq was fine with the free throws with his team up six and the game pretty much over, but guaranteed to not come through with his team down two and him on the line.
Hughes is a kid who works his butt off and brings it day by day. Joba is all soft, I'm starting to think.
How am I supposed to sleep now? I'm all riled up. So fucking pissed.
What an abject disgrace.
I wonder what the Rays and Yankees records would be if they swapped Joes?
[778] All around.
[777] Thanks. Very tough personal year, which just doesn't mix well with the most hellish school that doesn't involve scrubs.
[778] So true. Just not the night I wanted a shit show, and as sleep-deprived as I am, dang it, I want what I want!!! Waaaah.
[767] Much better? No. But *better*? Fuck, yes.
Private Pyle has made a grand total of 6 errors in 6 seasons. Asking him to botch a throw that didn't need to be rushed or hurried, in fact, just needed to be delivered 60 feet in something merely resembling a timely fashion, doesn't seem like a very good bet to me.
But as they say, YMMV ...
On another note, does everyone agree with William about Thames being out there. My instinct was to ask wtf he was doing out there in that spot, but is Nick truly available to play the field?
[779] Agreed. You see Hughes struggling but working through it, like Andy does, making shit up as he goes along, keeping his composure. Joba can't be successful unless he throws 96. 92's just not good enough for him.
I don't want to say we should trade him, but I'm starting to entertain the thought.
[779] Oh, and mazal tov, btw! Very well done!
Oh, and on a positive note, the bottom four in the lineup tonight was the bottom four. Can't win day in day out like that.
Hey, maybe we'll win our protest, lol.
[784] something to wind down to? (may have posted this before?)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4E2aaQHcXHw&feature=related
[788] Hah aha a h !!
Oh yeah, that! Forgot all about that!!
Girardi coming up, then I'm off to bed...
[787] Thanks! I don't know if there was any glory, but I'm pretty confident that I passed and am a 3L, now...
And as to [786] that's what I'm starting to get in the back of my head... I don't feel the way about him I thought I would at this point in time.
[784] How many of those throws do you think were under similar stress? If you saw the play (which I assume you did), Papelbon actually turned to second first, which would have given Cano even more time. The bottom line is that with one out, you take the chance, knowing that the worst case is you still have the tying run in scoring position. By not going, he gave Papelbon an easy out and first and then put the game in Winn's lap.
This wasn't a ball hit right back to Papelbon. The correct play was to break for home. Cano didn't and it contributed to the Yankees losing.
[785] Before the game Swisher said he felt great. Besides, his bicep only bothered him at the plate, not in the field.
[793] Except that if you saw the play ... or actually the *replay* (and I assume you did) Cano *did* break for home off the bat.
If was only *after* seeing that Paplebon speared the ball that he hustled back to 3rd.
But other than that ... spot on.
"We gave them an extra out and you can't afford..."
[795] Right...he got a good break SO he should have keep coming. Had he done that, there would have been a chance to score. After spearing the ball, Papelbon turned to second and the whirled back to the plate. I like the Cano's chances for that reason, but even if he was thrown out, you are still in the position of needing a Randy Winn hit. It was well worth the risk involved because the greater risk was relying on Randy Winn.
I assume you think it was wise to put the game in Winn's lap? Girardi apparently agrees with you. Of course, that was a big reason why the Yankees lost.
Swish wasn't brought in because then they'd have had to pinch hit for him against a righty.
[795] And, I should add, he did so in concert with Rob Thomson, who was frantically waving him back to the bag, but hey, what the fuck do *they* know?
[798] According to LoHud, he said he felt great before the game.
[799] He only waived him back once Cano stopped. If you noticed, they had a conversation after the play. But you're right...Thomson is the third base coach so he is always right. And Girardi too. The Yankees just happened to lose in spite of their brilliance.
[797] Yup. And there was a chance he would have been struck by lightning; obviously *that* would have been less than his chances of being safe, but, relatively speaking, no less likely than his being safe would have been in relation to his being out.
As it were ...
[800] No, I'd say they lost because we had several pitchers pitch like shit.
If you want to make this about Cano not scoring on a play that, frankly, he'd be lucky to score on 2 times out of 10 (and that's being GENEROUS) , then pork away buddy, fuck'er blue.
As usual, though, I'm just not buying it ...
[801] [802] If you believe that play is automatic, well, then it's not worth discussing further. I think it's pretty close to common sense that the runner should break there, but I'm sure there's some validity to your talk of lightning, pork and fuck'er blues. I am not tryin to convince you otherwise; it's Cano's inability to read the situation that really concerns me because that's the one that impacted the game.
My inclination is to think baal is on the right track.
Btw, was Tex's foot still on the bag? It sure as hell looked like it, but they never seemed to give us the perfect replay.
Because as a 1B myself, I sure thought he was still on.
But the biggest sin is that Joba punked out.
[776] We really, really need two lefties.
[805] Oliver Perez is probably available..
[803] Yes, well, It's pretty clear that what *you* think "common sense" is, I think isn't anything close to "common sense" at all.
Again, this is no surprise, it's nothing new.
And, to belabor the point, it wasn't that the play was "automatic" it was that the odds of an out at home were far worse than the odds of Winn coming through with a hit ... but when you've got a dead horse to flog, those sorta things don't matter, do they?
[807] That's funny...what you think is common sense doesn't seem to be what I do. I'll stick with my reading of the play, and you can stick with yours. Had Cano tried to score, we really don't know what would have happened. He did take your approach, however, and we do know how that turned out.
The only horse being beaten is you trying to convince me that I am wrong without offering anything more than sarcasism, which is usually a refuge when a compelling argument is lacking.
[808] Banter glossary alert! "sarcasism"! Chyll Will, anymore room on the t-shirts??
[781] Lets not forget that Joe Maddon fiddled while Rome burned and almost singlehandedly cost the Rays the ALCS.
[808] Sarcasism is even better than sarcasism...it includes talk of pork and fuck'er blues.
[810] How so...I don't recall Maddon doing a bad job in the 2008 ALCS.
[808] Except that the two events *are* separate, aren't they?
Sometimes you stay on a 14 when the dealer shows a 16 and you win, sometimes you stay and the dealer hits and you lose
.
The outcome changes, the math that drives your decision doesn't*.
The chance of Cano beating that ground ball back to the pitcher to the plate is less than the chance of Winn getting a hit, *that's* my argument. We each know how we evaluate that equation, all that's left is for everyone else to make their own calculation after watching the video.
It ain't like I've got any interest in bothering to argue with *you*, I've spent too much time at Banter to bother with that ...
*specific card calculations being the same.
[812] He left Balfour in well past the point where it was obvious he had nothing. Then he finally took him out and immediately did the same with Dan Wheeler.
[806] Could you imagine Giardi with three lefties? The starters would go four innings.
[813] You've made your argument...you think Winn had a better chance to get a hit than Cano did to score on a ball that Papelbon fielded, turned toward second and then back toward home. I think Cano, who was off on contact, would have had a chance to score if Papelbon's throw was less than perfect, something not hard to imagine from a pumped up reliever whose mind is racing. Without any numbers to back it up, no one can really say what event is more likely.
However, in my scenario, the worst case is the Yankees still need a hit from Winn to tie the game. In your scenario, that's the best case. That's where common sense comes into the equation, from my point of view.
Also, if it is a bother to have your opinion challenged, then by all means don't engage. I wont feel left out, I promise.
Except that in reality, as I saw it, it's not a matter of "less than perfect", it's a matter of anything short of catastrophe ... the ball was sharply hit, Paplebon made a quick turn and decision, Cano was not more than 1/2 way down the line (if that).
All Paplebon had to do was deliver the ball to home plate without throwing the ball above, below or past Martinez.
If you want to believe that the chance of that was less than the chance of Winn getting a hit (subsequently) then, well, we're just going to have to agree to disagree, won't we?
[813] Weren't there men on second and third with Winn up?
If that's the case then his best case is that a Winn hit wins the game.
And I think most people feel that Cano scoring clocks in at a much lower probability than you seem to think it does.
Ack. I meant to write [816].
[814] Balfour and Wheeler were excellent that season, so I can see having confidence in the guys who got you there. Also, he did trust a rookie to close out Game 7. That takes a lot of guts.
This season alone, Maddon has bunted home two winning runs. Girardi would never do that. Heck, if you were really committed to the bunt, why not use Pena to hit for Miranda and then have him try the squeeze?
Every time I watch the Rays, he seems to make a positive difference. Girardi's impact, however, is usually negative. I really think if he each man was managign the other team, the positions in the standing would be reversed.
[817] Eh, whatever ... I'm done here.
Good nite all.
[820] Having confidence in someone is great. Ignoring that they are getting knocked around the ballpark because of something they did earlier in the year seems like something you would rip Joe Torre apart for.
[822] As you mentioned though, other accomplished relievers also struggled. Where was he to turn. I don't remeber the specifics, but if trusting a reliever who had an ERA+ around 250 (as BAlfour did that season) for too long is his biggest downfall, I'll sign up right now.
