…Weeks. That’s how long Andy Pettitte is expected to miss.
The Yanks could try to ride this out with what they’ve got, but my Spidey Sense tells me a move will be made. Question is, will it be a boffo move (Roy Oswalt), or a hold-down-the-fort-move (Mitre, Ponson)?
Which one of these?
Fudgie the Whale? Seriously?
Ah, too damned hot to get upset over anything. Too frakking hot.
Had the Yanks decided Joba should still be a starter, and sent him down to AAA after spring training to get the experience he needs, they'd have a ready-made answer right now, and not have to debate the relative putrid-ness of Mitre vs Gaudin vs Moseley.
/rant
BTW, my answer is D. Ivan Nova. Better the kid than any of the retreads.
The one thing that makes Oswalt somewhat attractive is that if the Astros are interested in salary relief, you probably wouldn't have to give up too much to get him. The Astros have never been a sensible trading partner, however, so I don't he'll be moved at all. What's more, Oswalt strikes me as the kind of pitcher who probably wouldn't translate to the AL anyway.
The Yankees have always been willing to accept a subpar #5, so I don't think Cashman will target a starter. Instead, I'd imagine he'll pursue a bat to help rectify his biggest mistake (i.e., signing Nick Johnson).
I guess it depends on how well the offense holds up. The big question is if they can swing for a bigger bat. The fact that it's being speculated by the muckrakers should temper the Yanks' enthusiasm to trade for any pitcher; the media speculation alone will tip the scale towards the other team.
[2] If Woody had gone right to the police, this would never have happened...
[5] We have to stop meeting like this, or people will suspect we are of one mind; that would be bad... total protonic reversal! >;)
[5] and of course that last quote was meant for [4]. Damn you split personality! (and WordPress)
[6] *sigh* [5]-->[3] ... (going back to sleep)
[5] Best Woody Woodpecker episode ever...SHUT UP!
They definitely need a bat more than a pitcher IF Pettitte is really out no more than five weeks. I think they can do fine during that time. Mitre is capable of holding down the fort and the other starters are capable of making up for his failure to do so. The team just needs one of those two things to happen.
Wow, we're getting a rare peek at the signals flashing over Chyll Will's corpus callosum! WordPress is awesome.
[2] I had vowed to myself that I would not use the Pettitte injury as an opportunity to complain about the fact that Joba now cannot be used as a starter. Thanks for bringing it up...I agree with you entirely!
OK, that's done. There is no use in griping now...what's done is done. The question now is what are they going to do.
As I mentioned last thread, and on this I agree with William [3], I don't see the Yankees making a move to replace a Mitre with another Mitre. They're gonna hold tight and, if anything, go after a bat.
[2] the correct answer is Ivan Nova.
if you have to choose between an arm and a bat I still think you have to go for the bat with the way this team is constructed.
I agree with what was said last night in that if all we can get is someone else's retread, then might as well hold pat. Already have plenty of those in-house.
Lilly is an intriguing name because of his track record and availability, but looking at his peripherals this year there are plenty of red flags that the AL East might not exactly be a great idea. Haren will cost a ransom, so screw that. Oswalt I would like, I happen to think he'd be fine in the AL...not ace levels, but something similar to Pettitte 2.0, a perfectly capable middle of the rotation guy. But trading with Uncle Drayton usually involves less logic than a Fellini film.
I'd trade a boatload of non-Montero prospects for Dan Haren and then sign Cliff Lee in the winter.
Maximize quality inthe rotation as the lineup becomes more ordinary w/ Jeter and Arod no longer delivering what they used to.
[14] My only worry with Haren is the Diamondbacks. With Byrnes out, and Jerry DiPoto temporarily in, you have to figure ownership probably has some say, and they aren't going to want to make a deal that doesn't net them a big name. Otherwise, they could get a lot of egg on their faces.
[11] That's the advantage of missing so many game threads - I can make that rant (for I think just the 4th or 5th time this season) and its not too big of a dead horse.
But I agree, since the answer is not trade for a pitcher, they need to go get a bat. Ideally, Adam Dunn, if the Nationals would take a couple of B-level pitching prospects. Or maybe Brandon Laird excites them.
[15] Good point. I would at least try and see what it would take.
The best part about Haren is that he can be retained reasonably thru 2013, enabling the lee, jeter, and mariano signings.
[15] if I can have one person and one person only by the deadline it would be Dunn, I really think he could have a David Justice type of impact on the lineup heading down the stretch. But word is that, for whatever reason, Washington's asking price is gonna be high. It would take more than a couple of organizational prospects.
[17] I predicted last night that the Yankees will land Dunn, and I'm sticking with that prediction. he could be costly, though...
the person I would REALLY love to get on this team is Prince, but that I think is the reach to end all reaches. I do not at all see it happening. Not within the next week at least.
i would love to add one of those hitters. but i'd rather trade for haren.
given andy's fragility and hughes inning limit, and aj's volatility, i would like to have another option in the postseason rotation. vazquez has pitched his way into the conversation, but really, i'm not thrilled with the outlook right now of giving the ball to either aj or javy. and that's assuming pettitte recovers perfectly from missing over a month.
[19] Purple pinstripes, not seeing it. Hot chicks purifying themselves in the waters of Lake Minnetonka... I can definitely see that within the next week! (my bet is that Jeter had Lake Minnewaska on standby on weekend home games, but never made a theatrical release out of it...)
[21] if we got him we'd probably have to take on the rest of Morris Day and Jerome's contracts, thats the thing.
[22] Damn, I forgot about that. Well how are we ever gonna get rid of the scourge of P Diddy? C'mon folks, The Time is Now...
I said in the other thread, a hold down the fort move would be stupid and pointless. We have enough bad starters in the organization already
Dunn will be a Type A at the end of the season and is looking for a late career big contract rumored to be 4 years $60 mil. The press here in DC (where I live) insist his agent prefers the free market to re-signing and the Nats like draft picks and seem happy to let the current contract run out (because they are building and have only a growing portion of their own TV revenue and maybe they are just cheap).
So for the Yankees to get Dunn, they'll have to give what is essentially already guaranteed: draft picks, plus the rental price for the rest of the year. And the way the Nats promote Dunn at the stadium, they aren't going to let that rental be cheap.
For that kind of compensation Dunn would have to be an everyday player (he has said he doesn't want to be a DH) and that seems hard to accommodate unless he wants to start pitching. Basically, my feeling is that there is a ZERO percent chance that the Yankees get Dunn, and I'm okay with that at the prices the Nats are asking.
If I were a betting man, I'd wager on a deal that would hold down the fort. Don't know why they couldn't get a handful of starts out of guys like Mitre, Mosely, Gaudin or some guy from AAA until Pettitte returns.
