Phil Hughes gave up three runs on a couple of homers through five innings today but had a lead when the skies opened-up thanks in part to two dingers off the bat of Curtis Granderson. It started pouring by me in the north west corner of the Bronx before it hit the Stadium. The tops of the trees whipped around in a frenzy and I had half a mind to go outside and run around just cause. You know, little kid stuff. Then the old man in me sighed, thought better of it, and sat my ass right back down.
Pretty soon the tarp came on the field at the Stadium and it wasn’t until two hours later that play resumed. The Yanks rolled from there. The only blip came when Joba Chamberlain walked the lead off runner in the eighth and then gave up a two-run homer. But the Yanks piled it on late and ran away with it. One scary moment in the eighth when Alex Rodriguez got plunked on the forearm and had to leave the game.
Fortunately, he was okay, didn’t need to go for x-rays and is expected to play tomorrow. The bum didn’t hit a homer. Stuck on 599. Only got two hits and three RBI. Loser. Jeter had three hits, Teixeira had two, and so did Robinson Cano, who got the 1,000th base hit of his career.
Final Score: Yanks 12, Royals 6.
The Rays won but the Sox lost. Yanks stay three ahead of Tampa and are now eight ahead of Boston. And we prepare for the week ahead and go to sleep the heppiest of kets.

still waiting on 600, but I think its fair to say that A-Rod has pretty much locked in now.
He's .306/.364/.510 since the Seattle series right before the break. Put that together with the monster second half Teixeira is building and more regular production from Jeter and Granderson, and this lineup should be just fine without any outside help.
Losing out on Haren sucks, but that move looks like a salary dump plain and simple. And as much as I like Haren, I understand not wanting to make that kind of committment. Get an extra arm for the bullpen and some bench help this week and I'll be satisfied.
Now I sit and wait for Mad Men...
[1] Hm, that line is surprisingly low -- it's well below his career average. So I don't think it shows that he's locked in. But (as I mentioned in the game thread) I love how he's getting RBI base hits under the pressure of the 600th homer. The fact that he can tag a double, and then a single, and then work a walk (in which the fourth ball just happened to hit him), shows that he's in charge, that he isn't letting the pressure of the moment control him. That's so good to see.
Yeah, I'm loving RBI base hits when everyone is wating for the dinger. The next homer will be great, but the RBI base knocks ain't nothing to sneeze at neither.
[1] The way i see it, Cashman has almost always (if not always) made his mid-season trades under the radar. We didn't know boBBy was coming until he was here, same with Pudge and a slew of other mid-season moves. I don't think anyone's in a hurry to help the Defending Champion New York Yankees (an important distinction, mind you) unless they can drain the Yanks' farm in the process; I'll be surprised at who or whatever he brings in the next few days.
As always, take the speculation with a grain of salt, especially around the trade deadline (or maybe the whole shaker...)
Via RAB, Jon Heyman reports that the Yankees "made a big offer" for Soria. Interesting. Well, except it's Heyman, so, grain of salt. Still, he might be the only relief pitcher I wouldn't be unhappy to see Cashman give something up for.

[7] Oh! Sure, I know where that is, on the Schoodic Penninsula. I go up to that area every summer, but I've never been to Winter Harbor. I think it might actually be right near another part of Acadia National Park (the Park is composed of disjoint segments, it's discontinuous).
Man, I can't wait. The blueberries, mmmmm. (I know you don't eat anything smaller than Cocoa Puffs, thelarmis, so these wild blueberries are out of the question.)
Oh, and to drive there from NY is going to be about nine hours, if you don't stop and there isn't much traffic. Ugh. Maybe they'll fly to Bangor?

Main part of Acadia tomorrow, very nice -- the mountains (really more like hills) are really great but too crowded on summer weekends, so it's smart to wait for Monday. And, they can stop at Bar Harbor Brewery! Also the ice cream store around the corner where the Obamas got cones a few weeks ago.

Yes, the blueberry beer! I had it at the tasting. Uh, not exactly my thing, but I'm glad I tried it.
But the stout is the best, seriously. It's one of the best beers I've ever had.

On impulse, I just went onto StubHub and bought three bleacher seats for Thursday evening in Cleveland. I'll need to leave work early Thursday afternoon anyway for a 2:00 traffic court appearance, so I figured I'd just pick up my boys afterwards and make the 3-1/4 hour trek to Progressive Field (we missed the Yanks in Comerica this year, as my wife had given birth the Friday before).
Now I'll need to root against A-Rod in the first three games :-(.
