Ha! William Bendix falling out the window in "The Dark Corner" was one of the funniest death scenes I'd ever seen; which considering that it was film noir, I'm sure that was quite unintentional.
I guess Charles Laughton would have been overdoing the Babe a little, and for the life of me I can't think of anyone besides Sidney Greenstreet (too old) and Dan Seymour (character actor, Captain Renard in To Have & Have Not; obviously not known well enough)... fact of the matter is, Babe didn't do Babe much justice even as himself in the movies. One of those guys where you can only write about him or create majestic portraits of him, but you can never imitate him on stage or in film. Even now, Joe Don Baker's come the closest to even a reasonable caricature of The Babe, far surpassing John Goodman in just a matter of minutes.
Back to Bendix, looking at that poster and knowing his stature, he likely would have made a fabulous Yogi if the timing was right...
I don't know about Bendix, but watching John Goodman play the Babe was pure torture. Near the end when he said, "I love....THE GAME", I just about vomited from that horrible over-acting. He was great in Raising Arizona but just shitty as the Babe.
Can't they make a good Babe Ruth movie? Also, how about a Boys of Summer movie? Clemente Movie? Aaron Movie? others.
