Stunning. I'm surprised they didn't try and trade for a no prospect minor leaguer, or a bag of used balls.

I've always liked Melky...wouldn't mind seeing the Yankees invite him to Spring Training next season, assuming he doesn't get a solid offer elsewhere.

bigger disappointment from this trade: melky or javy?

(vizcaino ended up under the knife)

[2] Ya, sure, why not. He was looking pretty out of shape in ATL. I'll probably be singing my Reed Johnson song come winter.

In other news, Chien-Ming Wang, who didn't get into a game this year, is still working on making it back. Looks like the Nats still want him for next year. If that doesn't work out he would be a nice minor league contract pickup.

Having Wang and Melky in spring training next year would be neat, two critical stopgap guys in the late oughts that didn't quite make the long haul. Really sad. They'll probably get better offers though. At least we have Robinson and Phil.

[3] Melky. We already knew Javy was crappy, but I'm disappointed that Melky hasn't blossomed.

[5] i love ol' melkowitz - even have the t-shirt - but i watched that live and it was hella hilarious! even melky was cracking up in the outfield soon-thereafter, which rubbed some folks wrong.

well, we did get boone logan in the deal...

amazing that we still have a melky in the system.

i guess it was too obscure, but i always wished there were more plays on his name, in reference to the Tolkien Lost Tales - The Chaining of Melko and The Theft of Melko and the Darkening of the Valinor...

the braves release could've read: "The Un-chaining of Melky"!

[3] [6] [7] thelarmis beat me to it - its possible that (pending what happens to Vizcaino*) Boone Logan might be the real piece of value in the trade

*With all the pitching prospects the Yanks are swimming in right now, unless Arodys becomes a near-historic talent, maybe that doesn't matter either.

[7] My man! A Tolkien reference! Well done!

Though Melky seems too happy to ever go all dark and evil like Melko (aka Melkor) did. I'm also not sure I can ever see him partnering with a giant ass spider, unless Cano put on a ton of weight and similarly became evil.

I am now kicking myself for not making the Melky-Melko (Melkor) connection sometime in the last 5 years . . . sigh.

Here's the thing - Melky isn't very good and he never was. Yeah, I have some fond memories too. Let's leave them that way. I do not want to see him in camp.

[8] it's funny, i always call him "melkor" but i didn't wanna post wrong. when i did a quick peek into one of my books, i was surprised to see "melko".

melkor, it is, and should be! (though both work).

see youze all later tonight...

GO AJ!!! GO YANKS!!!

9) Agreed.

[9] [11] The Yanks do seem to have a large number of can't really hit (especially not for power), don't walk, but can run a bit and field pretty well, 5th-OF types around (note: Brett Gardner isn't one of them) . . . why add another into the mix?

I guess that's part of the reason why they have Laird playing OF in the Arizona Fall League. The last outfield prospect the Yanks had who could actually walk and hit with any kind of power was . . . Marcus Thames? That's the best I could come up with.

[8] I think that was one of Tolkien's early versions of the name - in any case I was just psyched to see JRR's might works mentioned!

Not exactly a shock. Melky "Make LOB, not WAR" Cabrera hasn't exactly been impressive in Atlanta. He was nice to have around at minimum wage, but he's not worth $3+ million.

Melky minus twenty pounds would be a good backup.
