[3] it is beyond unreal. hamilton mainly plays brushes for a living. steve smith, is the greatest all-around drummer this - or any other planet - has ever seen (or heard)!!! the fact that his brushes chops are where they are, amongst all his kit work, is beyond belief.
[2] agreed about The Quintet. What an amazing record that is! Bird was billed as Charlie Chan cause of contractual reasons. A Night In Tunisia is mind-blowing on that record, too.
I love when that happens.
i actually just taught this tune to one of my college classes last week.
the following clip is of two drumming masters, playing "salt peanuts" with brushes!
maynard ferguson had some great 'salt peanuts' quotes on a live record of his from 1983.
i always loved playing this or quoting it in 'trading', with various jazz combos i've worked with.
the 'massey hall' performance w/ bird, diz, bud, mingus & max is historically great!
