Alex, I've long been an ardent devotee of The Band, but I had not heard that version of "Jemima Surrender" before. For my money, the version on the album, to cover of which you show on the post, is a superior arrangement.

I liked Howard Tate's version more than I thought I would. The groove is there, and also the urgency for, you know, Jemima to surrender.

[1] I dunno, the first one has more of a primal urgency. The second one seems a little more flowery. The Band says, "Hey, I neeeed you right now and nobody better be trying ta...", while Tate seems to be the other guy trying ta... yunnow.

Yeah, I would have to say that the released version on that 2nd album by The Band is superior to that rough take, but its an interesting listen. Those guys were so versatile and well-versed in so many styles.
