[81] Among other things, it includes repeating how exciting and historic this or that IL meeting is when in reality it is a mundane series in the June. It is an attempt to make (or better market) something as historic by assertion. This attempt can be enhanced by bringing up the last time the teams played an important series. With IL play, though, this often leads to ludicrous comparisons.: "The last time the Cubs and Yankees met, a guy named Babe Ruth played right field...and with the win the Cubs come a game closer to evening the all time series against the Yankees...etc." Yeah, because a random IL series in 2011 is comparable to and reminiscent of a long ago WS matchup.

I don't see playing the same team 19 times a season a bore. I don't see it necessarily as exciting, either, but when the teams are competitive (like the Yankees and Red Sox of late) it tends to encourage a long, building tension over the course of the year. Plus, the competition tends to be "fair" inasmuch as over six series stretched over the season, both teams will face each others' best players, both will suffer injuries, etc.

I for one do not find the novelty of the opponent particularly interesting or exciting; I am not thrilled to see the Brewers because they are "different." Plus, I am bothered by the unfairness built into the current IL schedule: teams in the same division do not play the same schedule and , given that you face an IL opponent only once (usually), there is a good chance that the outcome of the series will be strongly dictated by chance (injuries, odd pitching matchups, etc). In addition, adding a bunch of IL games cuts into the number of non-divisional league games that each team plays.
