[1] I can't go along with that, but it's on the short list of best cover versions (of any tune) ever. The Band's version with The Staples is incredible, too.
I can't find a decent version of Wilson Pickett's "Hey Jude" - with Duane's brilliant lead.
[2] duane was an amazing studio musician before starting the Brothers. your posts these past 2 days has me digging up some cool old history i didn't fully know about.
my best friends' dad is the drummer in the allman brothers. but before he and i became bandmates and pals, i knew butch, derek, oteil, other trucks, etc...
i played with dickey betts about 10 years ago. he seemed to like me and my playing a lot...that is, until he found out i was from the col. bruce hampton camp and close with the trucks family. never got called for another gig!
[5] So your best friend's dad is Butch or Jaimoe?
The story I've heard is that Clapton heard Pickett's "Hey Jude" and immediately called Atlantic records (who had Cream at the time) and demanded to know who the guitarist was. I'm not sure if he called Ertugun or Tom Dowd. I do know also that when he was in the studio making the Layla album with Dowd, Dowd mentioned it to Duane. Duane said that he'd really love to come by and meet Clapton - "Eric Clapton from Cream?" - so he asked Clapton if it was okay and Clapton responded with an equally excited "Duane Allman from the Aretha Franklin album?"
Obviously, they made some pretty good music once they got together.
[4] Alex, check out the two Duane Allman Anthology compilations. They provide a nice greatest hits mix of his non Allman Brothers work as well as some nice Allman Bros. cuts.
derek and the dominoes were in miami recording. dowd was the engineer. when ABB came to town, tom suggested they go to the show. When he mentioned Duane's name, Eric said "you mean that bloke that played the solo on Wilson Pickett's 'Hey Jude?' and that is how Duane ended up on Layla.
[11] Yeah, I just found that account. Criteria studios saw some great music in 1970, huh. It's too bad he never toured with the Dominos. I know he did play a couple shows with them, but I've heard the boots are pretty rough quality.
MUCH better version than the Band's original!

[2] I mean on youtube. I have it on CD.
What are some other famous records Duane played on?

[6] Butch.
[8] I thought so, but you had me slightly confused!
[9] yeah, i realized that after! 2 drummers and such. but i figured the trucks mention gave it away. : )
btw, did you know butch jaimoe and mark's drum tech is also named Jaimoe? isn't that crazy?! they call him the "white jaimoe" : )
it'll never happen, but it would be awesome to have the fusion trio - w/ butch's son - open for abb at a beacon show. i could have my family there...
[6] close.

[12]off to teach!
enjoy great music!!! : )
[11] I thought it Jerry Wexler who introduced them?
