Bartolo Colon threw 38 strikes in a row, to 11 batters.

I'm kinda wishing we kept him.

2 Chris in Sydney   ~  Apr 19, 2012 5:31 pm

I think your lineup should have Cano at DH. Same error on LoHud.

3 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 19, 2012 6:16 pm

Atta boy,Nuney!

4 Alex Belth   ~  Apr 19, 2012 6:16 pm

Holy Jesus, Nunez, way to lollygag it. Putzone.

5 randym77   ~  Apr 19, 2012 6:18 pm

[2] Bet Phil is wishing it was Nunez DHing.

6 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 19, 2012 6:20 pm

For fuck's sake, Phil. Throw strikes!

7 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Apr 19, 2012 6:21 pm

Oh wow, E NunEz AND the usual 50-pitch Phil Hughes opening inning! Yayy!

8 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Apr 19, 2012 6:24 pm

[1] He's 3-1, with a WHIP of .8 and an ERA of 2.63. He should have been the back of rotation veteran (at $2M). Sometimes Cashman is trashman.

9 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 19, 2012 6:24 pm

Nunez. You fucking suck. You're not too far behind Phil.

10 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Apr 19, 2012 6:25 pm

I've had enough of Girardi, Nunez, Hughes and Ibanez. Screw this, I'm heading to the jazz blogs.

Fuckin' Girardi...WHY is Nunez playing 2B???

11 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Apr 19, 2012 6:26 pm

Can't take it...spotting another 4 run lead to the Twins. Great.

[5] No doubt. Him and me both.

13 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 19, 2012 6:31 pm

Big fly. That was gone off the bat.

14 rbj   ~  Apr 19, 2012 6:36 pm

Finally, Teix!

15 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 19, 2012 6:36 pm

Yay, Teix. Fucking Nune4!

16 Alex Belth   ~  Apr 19, 2012 6:36 pm

de ja who?

17 rbj   ~  Apr 19, 2012 6:43 pm

Very good Nunez

/sarc

18 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Apr 19, 2012 6:55 pm

I gotta ask. Why do the Yankees have an utility infielder who seemingly makes one error in every game he plays? Nunez is slated for at least 50% of the games this year with the "rest a vet" program in place.

Nunez is likable, has a strong throwing arm, certainly has the talent and his hitting has improved. But...you have got to make the routine plays 99.9% of the time in the major leagues.

19 rbj   ~  Apr 19, 2012 7:02 pm

You're forgiven Eduardo.

20 rbj   ~  Apr 19, 2012 7:02 pm

Curtis brought his boom stick tonight.

21 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 19, 2012 7:03 pm

Love me some Granderson! Damn he's sweet.

22 Boatzilla   ~  Apr 19, 2012 7:32 pm

Philatio

(Because he blows anymore)

23 Boatzilla   ~  Apr 19, 2012 7:37 pm

Hopefully, this will turn out good for the Yankees, but there's no reason why Cano should not be playing every inning of every game at 2nd base.

You would think that I'm stating the obvious.

24 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 19, 2012 7:41 pm

Damn Straight!

25 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Apr 19, 2012 7:43 pm

[23] Agree 110%.

CandyManCan!!!!!

26 rbj   ~  Apr 19, 2012 7:43 pm

More boom stick!

27 Boatzilla   ~  Apr 19, 2012 7:49 pm

Every time I step away something good happens.
We could be witnessing history.

28 rbj   ~  Apr 19, 2012 7:54 pm

Is it too greedy to ask for five?

29 Shaun P.   ~  Apr 19, 2012 7:57 pm

Holy crap! Granderson with 3 home runs! Clearly he was tired of Jeter leading the team in HR. ;)

Take away the inevitable Nune4 error, and Hughes has been just fine in this game. I feel bad when folks get down on Hughes. Since 2011 began, and not counting tonight, he's pitched 80 innings as a starting pitcher. Since his debut, he has one season where he's pitched more than 100 innings as a big league starter. Are people really surprised that he's still finding his way as a big league starter?

It takes time.

30 rbj   ~  Apr 19, 2012 8:06 pm

Shit.

31 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 19, 2012 8:09 pm

[28] At this rate, we may need five ...

Good to see Hughsie is putting it all together this year ...

32 Shaun P.   ~  Apr 19, 2012 8:10 pm

Again, no error by Nune4, and this is a 7-2 game and no one cares.

To put it another way, if Girardi's newest fetish was not "I must rest my starters because then I strengthen our weak-against-righties DH position", this is a 7-2 game and everyone is praising Hughes for pitching well.

33 Shaun P.   ~  Apr 19, 2012 8:11 pm

[31] Faith and patience, dude! It worked wonders for IPK.

34 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 19, 2012 8:12 pm

6 1/3. Slight improvement. Nune4 killed Hughes, but falling behind every gd hitter to start the game is bull.

35 Alex Belth   ~  Apr 19, 2012 8:14 pm

Any chance he makes it four?

36 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 19, 2012 8:17 pm

Regardless of whether or not you think Phil Hughes has a future as a starter with the Yankees (I don't) the FUCKING waste pitches drive me up a motherfucking wall with him. Why did the second 1-2 pitch need to be over Morneau's head?

Hughes is neither a good enough nor efficient enough pitcher to be throwing as many waste pitches as he does (and he does it nearly anytime he gets ahead in the count. I don't understand it.

37 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 19, 2012 8:19 pm

Errors happen. Good pitchers work around them. Nune5 didn't make a 4 run error with 2 outs, Hughes failed to nail down the inning.

Those runs may be unearned, but deserve had much to do with it ...

38 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 19, 2012 8:24 pm

IMO the pitchers who kill the Yanks attack the zone all game long. Strikes, Strikes, Strikes. I've been watching Hughes struggle with command for a couple of years. When he misses he misses by fucking feet, not inches. Strikes and balls alike. That's my 2 cents.

39 rbj   ~  Apr 19, 2012 8:27 pm

Never have been so disappointed in a single.

40 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 19, 2012 8:28 pm

[37]I agree with the meat of your post. He can't let the bottom fall out.

At the same time, while errors do happen, it can't be easy pitching in front of Eduardo Nunez. It passed ridiculous a long time ago. This is a man that can't field soft ground balls, so you can do everything right and it still ends in disaster.

41 Boatzilla   ~  Apr 19, 2012 8:28 pm

He could have another chance.

42 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 19, 2012 8:29 pm

[38] Changeups. Pitchers who kill the Yankees throw changeups.

43 Boatzilla   ~  Apr 19, 2012 8:29 pm

Here comes the best fielding DH in Major League Baseball.

44 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 19, 2012 8:30 pm

@#$@#$@$@L#$@$@$@#$@$@$@@#@#$#@$@#$@$@$@#$@

45 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 19, 2012 8:30 pm

Yeah, I saw that coming a mile away

46 rbj   ~  Apr 19, 2012 8:31 pm

Crap.

47 OldYanksFan   ~  Apr 19, 2012 8:33 pm

With as well as Jeter is doing this year, compared to how poorly he looked at the beginning of last year, I can only assume Minky Kelly had an adverse effect on him.

Robbie's a great hitter. I guess we can't expect him to wait for a pitch he can put in the air.

48 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 19, 2012 8:38 pm

The always reliable Soriano.

49 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Apr 19, 2012 8:40 pm

[48] He's really not a pleasant guy to watch pitch..

50 rbj   ~  Apr 19, 2012 8:45 pm

Phew!

51 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 19, 2012 8:45 pm

[49] that's the theme tonight

52 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 19, 2012 8:47 pm

I am a little worried about Mo pitching with a one run lead since he hasn't pitched since sometime in the Clinton administration. Lets get him some more runs

53 rbj   ~  Apr 19, 2012 8:54 pm

Get Curtis up again!

54 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Apr 19, 2012 9:04 pm

that was strike one

55 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 19, 2012 9:05 pm

If Nune4 botched that one the Banter would have imploded.

56 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 19, 2012 9:05 pm

There was relief when he hit the grounder, terror when I realized Nunez was at second, and relief when he actually made a play in about 1.5 seconds.

57 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 19, 2012 9:08 pm

[55] I always felt E, Nunez fits better because it covers all possibilities

58 rbj   ~  Apr 19, 2012 9:12 pm

Two run lead, please, Curtis.

60 rbj   ~  Apr 19, 2012 9:14 pm

Don't mind a strike two there. Ah, oh well, great night for him.

61 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 19, 2012 9:19 pm

Mo really should have gotten in one of the Angels games

62 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 19, 2012 9:20 pm

[57] I think he'll be fine in the long run, but it's fun to pick on him anyway.

63 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 19, 2012 9:22 pm

I'm looking forward to Mo announcing his new 3 year contract during the ASB.
All Rise.

64 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 19, 2012 9:22 pm

[62] I keep hearing people say that. Its not like he's *getting better* or that this is only over the course of a handful of games.

I think this is Eduardo Nunez.

65 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 19, 2012 9:22 pm

Yay!

66 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Apr 19, 2012 9:22 pm

Mariano Rivera, ladies and gentlemen.
Mariano Rivera.

67 rbj   ~  Apr 19, 2012 9:22 pm

Ah, Mo. Good night all.

68 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Apr 19, 2012 9:24 pm

Yay Mo, Yay Curtis, Yay Jeter. A win's a win, but things to work on.

69 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 19, 2012 9:25 pm

Ah, praise him with great praise!

70 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 19, 2012 9:28 pm

[64] It's hard to get into a defensive rhythm when you don't play ever day. I really think his defensive woes will iron themselves out. I'd rather have him than a slick fielder who hits like Cervelli. And as Buttermaker once said, Hank Aaron made 42 errors his first year in sandlot ball.

71 Alex Belth   ~  Apr 19, 2012 9:28 pm

Nice win. Mo. True indeed.

72 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 19, 2012 9:35 pm

[70] Cervelli's also a godawful defensive player, but that's another issue.

Nunez playing every day in Jeter and A-Rod's place last year was also terrible.

I think this is Eduardo Nunez.

73 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Apr 19, 2012 9:45 pm

[70] Buttermaker said that? And is it true?

74 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 19, 2012 10:05 pm

{73] It's from Bad News Bears. Walter Matheau climbed a tree to console his cf, Ahmad, who flubbed a ball for the Bears. It's my favorite baseball movie. No question.

75 Jon DeRosa   ~  Apr 19, 2012 10:21 pm

[73] It's common knowledge for crying out loud! Ask Ogilvie!

76 RIYank   ~  Apr 19, 2012 10:45 pm

I missed the whole thing. Flying to Nebraska, of all places. Sounds like I missed out on some ulcers but good hitting too.

Well, thanks, as always, be to Mo.

77 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Apr 19, 2012 10:49 pm

[74][75] Of course! I remember now! What a great film.

[76] Nebraska? Do they play baseball there or is it just corn fields and college football?

78 RIYank   ~  Apr 19, 2012 11:06 pm

I think they do play lots of baseball! But there don't seem to be huge numbers of Japanese people here.

79 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Apr 19, 2012 11:13 pm

[78] Haha. I know an American guy who married a Japanese lady, too her home to a town in Nebraska. She asked him "But..where IS...everything?" Not too many wide open spaces here unless you hit the north island of Hokkaido.
