MLB (Selig & co.) fired Shyam Das as arbitrator for MLB. Why? I guess because he was upholding the collection procedures in the Ryan Braun case.

2 RIYank   ~  May 14, 2012 6:01 pm

Should be a good game -- Hammel has been really tough.

3 RIYank   ~  May 14, 2012 6:07 pm

Rain?
Fuck.

4 rbj   ~  May 14, 2012 6:19 pm

Alright, lets get the game in.

5 Mattpat11   ~  May 14, 2012 6:28 pm

The man's name is Xavier Avery?

6 rbj   ~  May 14, 2012 6:29 pm

Congrats on your first ML hit kid, now let that be the only one Nova gives up tonight.

7 Mattpat11   ~  May 14, 2012 6:30 pm

Also, I'm tired of this "Jason Hammel pitching well" thing. It annoys me. He has a long and established history of sucking, and he should stick to it.

8 RIYank   ~  May 14, 2012 6:36 pm

[7] Maybe Ivan can pick up the Sucking slack for him.

9 rbj   ~  May 14, 2012 7:05 pm

Uh oh.

10 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 14, 2012 7:19 pm

Jesus, how does he run like that with bronchitis?

11 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 14, 2012 7:21 pm

Atta boy, Nick!

12 rbj   ~  May 14, 2012 7:28 pm

Finally. WordPress kept not accepting my login. And Nick with a hit with RISP.

13 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 14, 2012 7:32 pm

Nova is so much like Andy.

14 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 14, 2012 7:34 pm

Nick Johnson's career makes me so sad.

15 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 14, 2012 7:34 pm

Remember when he was picked off of third that time?

16 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 14, 2012 7:43 pm

Curtis!

17 rbj   ~  May 14, 2012 7:48 pm

Dang, missed Curtis.

18 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  May 14, 2012 7:50 pm

[7] I recall similar comments about Cliff Lee a few years back though..maybe Hammels has "flipped the switch"?

What I miss What i miss?

19 rbj   ~  May 14, 2012 7:58 pm

That sucks.

20 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 14, 2012 7:59 pm

Cano is ridiculous over there.

Jesus, did you see that?

21 Mattpat11   ~  May 14, 2012 8:09 pm

[18] Anything is possible, but I'll always lean turns "fluke" first.

And "he's doing something illegal" second.

22 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 14, 2012 8:10 pm

I exited at 3-2 and cam back to 5-3. WTF! And now the bases are juiced. I can't stand Showalter and his obnoxious puss.

23 RIYank   ~  May 14, 2012 8:12 pm

[22] You do understand the juice is ours, right?
:-)

24 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 14, 2012 8:12 pm

Wow.

For a split second, out of the corner of my eye, I thought Jorgie was up looking at Ibanez.

25 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 14, 2012 8:13 pm

[23] Of course. Just sayin' how much a person can miss in 15 minutes. : )

26 Mattpat11   ~  May 14, 2012 8:14 pm

[22] Buck Showalter the manager annoys the hell out of me, but he was very kind to me when i was a little kid, so I can never truly hate him.

27 RIYank   ~  May 14, 2012 8:14 pm

I have the Orioles' feed. It's very calm, professional. I think this is the first time I've heard these guys.

28 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 14, 2012 8:14 pm

It's through, it's through!

29 Mattpat11   ~  May 14, 2012 8:15 pm

Did it seem like the Orioles took their sweet ass time getting to that ball after it got by Davis?

30 rbj   ~  May 14, 2012 8:15 pm

Dino! I'll take that.

31 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 14, 2012 8:15 pm

That's a bea......er, uh, E3. Huzzah!

32 RIYank   ~  May 14, 2012 8:15 pm

RaOOOOOOOOOL!!!

33 Mattpat11   ~  May 14, 2012 8:15 pm

In the air Eric.

34 RIYank   ~  May 14, 2012 8:16 pm

Wow, this is getting a little weird. Weeping is hallucinating Posada, Mattpat is getting all nostalgic for his childhood with Buck Showalter.

35 Mattpat11   ~  May 14, 2012 8:16 pm

Further than that, Eric.

36 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 14, 2012 8:17 pm

[34] Hehehe. Indeed.

37 rbj   ~  May 14, 2012 8:18 pm

Soon to be illegal

38 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 14, 2012 8:18 pm

Jesus, now each time we see the "Old Jeff Nelson," we'll have to hear that it's to be outlawed next year.

39 Mattpat11   ~  May 14, 2012 8:18 pm

[34] :) :) :)

When I was eight, we went to see a game in Baltimore. It just so happened to be the Yankees hotel, and I went nuts chasing people all over the hotel. The concierge was chasing me around trying to get me to leave them alone. When I caught up with Buck, the concierge caught up with me and tried to drag me away. Buck told him to go away and signed an autograph and chatted with me.

40 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  May 14, 2012 8:18 pm

[34] That struck me too. :]
Showalter always struck me as a bit of a Neidermeyer-type...

Let's hear if for bad D!

41 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  May 14, 2012 8:18 pm

[39] That is so cool! I take back the Neidermeyer comment.

42 RIYank   ~  May 14, 2012 8:20 pm

[39] Awwwwwwww.

43 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 14, 2012 8:20 pm

That looked high.

44 Mattpat11   ~  May 14, 2012 8:20 pm

[41] I also got Steve Howe (believe it or not, also very very nice) and my hero Don Mattingly.

Reggie ran away from me

45 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 14, 2012 8:21 pm

I am certainly not going to miss Michael Kay talking about the fucking "Jeff Nelson Play" ever gd time the pitcher fakes to third and throws to first. He usually also says it hasn't worked in 15 years which is bullshit. Had to get that one off my chest.

46 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 14, 2012 8:21 pm

[42] Awwwww, so dear.

47 Mattpat11   ~  May 14, 2012 8:22 pm

[45] Granderson fell for it last year. I think it ended a game

48 RIYank   ~  May 14, 2012 8:22 pm

The whole balk rule is stupid. There should be no such thing as a balk. If you can throw between your legs to first while you're in a full windup, more power to you. Baseball should be fun!

49 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 14, 2012 8:23 pm

[45] Jesus, what's wrong with you? It's "The Old Jeff Nelson," not the "Jeff Nelson Play."

People's Front of Judea, indeed!

50 RIYank   ~  May 14, 2012 8:25 pm

wtf is going on here? Luis Ayala is untouchable all of a sudden??

51 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 14, 2012 8:25 pm

That's not really an acceptable outcome.

52 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 14, 2012 8:25 pm

[49] What's wrong with you? It's "The Ol' Jeff Nelson." ; )
Well that was a waste of risp.

53 mhoward120   ~  May 14, 2012 8:26 pm

Why do they ALWAYS seem to suck in this situation?

54 RIYank   ~  May 14, 2012 8:26 pm

Oy. They couldn't have had that lazy fly for the first or the second out???

55 rbj   ~  May 14, 2012 8:27 pm

Rats, I wanted more.

56 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  May 14, 2012 8:28 pm

[49][52] What did they ever do for us anyways? Besides water aqueducts, roads and infrastructure? Oops, wrong dialogue..

Tie game now. Hope the pen can hold the Oriole O!

57 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 14, 2012 8:29 pm

[52] [56] laughing

58 RIYank   ~  May 14, 2012 8:29 pm

Damn, that doesn't look good at all.

59 rbj   ~  May 14, 2012 8:36 pm

[56] Education.

Been a long time since I watched that movie, may have to throw it in the DVD player.

60 mhoward120   ~  May 14, 2012 8:36 pm

Why does Girardi use Rapada more than a compulsive masturbator uses his hand?

61 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 14, 2012 8:41 pm

[59] Public order. Let's face it, they do know how to keep order. Only ones who could in a place like this.

62 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 14, 2012 8:42 pm

Why are Baltimore games always so excruciating?

63 RIYank   ~  May 14, 2012 8:42 pm

Who just left the Yankee bench? The O's announcers saw someone but didn't recognize him.

64 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 14, 2012 8:43 pm

[63] Karim Garcia?

65 RIYank   ~  May 14, 2012 8:50 pm

Clay Rapada, apparently.

66 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 14, 2012 8:51 pm

A homerun!!!

67 mhoward120   ~  May 14, 2012 8:52 pm

I was about to say "Isn't it pitiful when Tex has only a "key" walk because it scores a run?" but now I take it all back

68 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 14, 2012 8:52 pm

Man, that thing was teed up for him.

Still, I'll take it.

69 RIYank   ~  May 14, 2012 8:52 pm

Eat it, Baltimore.

70 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 14, 2012 8:52 pm

Now I'm hallucinating!

71 mhoward120   ~  May 14, 2012 8:54 pm

WTF is a "boog" anyway?

72 RIYank   ~  May 14, 2012 8:55 pm

The Orioles announcers are now talking endlessly about "keeping guys fresh" (bullpen guys). Fresh and strong. Buck is doing his best to keep them fresh.

It's like a freaking feminine hygiene commercial.

73 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 14, 2012 8:59 pm

Curtis catches everything.

And

He catches everything in such a way that I never doubt he'll catch it.

Never.

He catches everything possible to be caught.

74 RIYank   ~  May 14, 2012 9:00 pm

Easy as pie, no problem for Curtis.

75 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 14, 2012 9:01 pm

Remember when Curtis was pegged a poor defensive CF when he came here? He struggled some in his last year or two in Detroit if memory serves.

76 rbj   ~  May 14, 2012 9:03 pm

Was going to be a hit any way.

77 RIYank   ~  May 14, 2012 9:04 pm

[75] I believe he still looks pretty bad by defensive sabermetrics. I can't figure out why.

78 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  May 14, 2012 9:06 pm

[77] RIYank, I think you are more up to date on some of the new metrics than I am..can you help out with this? http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2012/baseball/mlb/05/14/power.rankings.week.5/index.html?sct=mlb_t11_a0

How is possible to have the Sawx above the Rays? I really can't undersatnd the methodology here..

79 RIYank   ~  May 14, 2012 9:06 pm

Oh, excellent. The game was moving much too fast. Now I can catch my breath.

80 RIYank   ~  May 14, 2012 9:08 pm

[78] Wow, that's interesting.

81 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 14, 2012 9:10 pm

Boooooooooooooooooooooooone!

82 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  May 14, 2012 9:13 pm

[80] Honestly, I don't see the point of suck "rankings". No matter what the stats say, how can anyone logically believe the Red Sox are a better team than Tampa right now? Am i just a complete dinosaur or are they off?

83 RIYank   ~  May 14, 2012 9:13 pm

Mr OK, they're looking at the underlying stats -- for instance, Boston pitchers have a high BABIP against, and their strikeouts and walks are not too bad. Meanwhile the Boston line-up is raking at the plate. So the secondary stats predict they'll do better. (I can't tell if they take into account the expect return of Ellsbury, Bailey, Dice-K. Can you?)

I mean, if you watch them, they look like they choke, spit the bit, gag with RISP, every way you can play worse than you are. So it's not that surprising, although I can tell you that Red Sox fans would laugh hard if told that their guys are better than the Rays.

84 kenboyer made me cry   ~  May 14, 2012 9:16 pm

Hej Hej,
This has been a funny game as in peculiar. Gloomy Balto night. Back in forth between the Devils/Rangers game. Did see that Granderson master catch.

Off topic, but anyone notice what Melky is doing for the Giants so far this year?

85 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 14, 2012 9:17 pm

The homeplate ump never signaled it hit him. Martin just kept waling to first. Strange.

86 RIYank   ~  May 14, 2012 9:18 pm

O's announcers are not super happy about this HBP. (Understandably.)

87 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 14, 2012 9:19 pm

For the love of fucking Pete!

88 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  May 14, 2012 9:19 pm

[83] Hmm..ok, I can understand that. But to have them ranked 7th? I've watched some Sox games this year..their pitching is TERRIBLE. Are the advanced stats like xFIP, etc then saying that there is some bad luck involved? Really seems out of whack..look where the Blue Jays rank, 28th??!

89 RIYank   ~  May 14, 2012 9:20 pm

Jeez, I think he was safe. Orioles' crew not saying anything about it.

90 RIYank   ~  May 14, 2012 9:21 pm

[88] Yes, lots of bad luck. Because in general pitchers have very little control over BABIP.

91 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  May 14, 2012 9:24 pm

[90] But..Bucholz and Beckett have been awful, line drive after line drive. Do the stats not take into account when pitchers give up lasers as opposed to dinky dunk bloop hits?

In any case, I fail to see the point of these ranking when they differ SO much from the standings..but will be interesting to go back after another month and see how predictive they are, yes?

92 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 14, 2012 9:25 pm

[90] Not if the pitcher's got good control.

93 RIYank   ~  May 14, 2012 9:28 pm

[91] Some stats do, for sure, but of course just looking at K, BB, HR, and BABIP, no, you won't notice that there are lots of line drives. Is that true about Beckett, though? I must be true of Buchholz (except for his most recent start).

I think the point of them is that they should in theory be better predictions than the standings are. That's probably right, too, don't you think? Are you expecting the Red Sox to be in last place in September?

94 kenboyer made me cry   ~  May 14, 2012 9:31 pm

[93 And corollary to that, do you expect the O's to be in first place in September?

95 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  May 14, 2012 9:31 pm

[93] I see..better predictors than early season standings.
I don't epect the Sox to be in last place, no. But I don't think they will pass TB or Toronto..they are a .500 team for more than half a season now. Anyways, I'll keep checking that weekly list. Interesting for sure..

96 RIYank   ~  May 14, 2012 9:34 pm

Damn, Boone looks good. Really good.

97 RIYank   ~  May 14, 2012 9:38 pm

And Corey.

98 mhoward120   ~  May 14, 2012 9:39 pm

Does any team in any sport have a song (?) as good as the Ranger fans' chant when a goal is scored?

99 mhoward120   ~  May 14, 2012 9:42 pm

The Tex engine is now revved up.

Uhhhh....
Why? Because they think they can make Ibanez GIDP?

102 OldYanksFan   ~  May 14, 2012 9:45 pm

Holy Shit! They're dropping like flies!

103 RIYank   ~  May 14, 2012 9:45 pm

[100] Okay, now ouch.

104 RIYank   ~  May 14, 2012 9:47 pm

Oh, very nice. That's a very helpful run!

105 OldYanksFan   ~  May 14, 2012 9:47 pm

Ibanez will be out a few games.

106 The Hawk   ~  May 14, 2012 9:54 pm

I'm not fond of this closer situation. Just pick one. (Robertson)

107 RIYank   ~  May 14, 2012 9:54 pm

Hm, Sori.

108 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 14, 2012 9:58 pm

[106] Hey, if they can both get 3 outs in the 9th I don't care who does it.

109 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 14, 2012 9:58 pm

Really? Fuck.

110 Mattpat11   ~  May 14, 2012 9:59 pm

CHAVEZ CAUGHT THE NUNEZ FLU

111 RIYank   ~  May 14, 2012 9:59 pm

[108] There is no way they're both getting three outs in the ninth. That's too many outs.

112 kenboyer made me cry   ~  May 14, 2012 9:59 pm

Chavez?

113 mhoward120   ~  May 14, 2012 9:59 pm

The ghost of Nunez haunts 3d base.

114 kenboyer made me cry   ~  May 14, 2012 10:00 pm

It looked like Chavez kinda slipped on the lip of the outfield grass.

115 kenboyer made me cry   ~  May 14, 2012 10:01 pm

ChavE5 works too. But nice play to end the game

116 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 14, 2012 10:01 pm

Ah, the 11 o'clock finish. Nice w.

117 RIYank   ~  May 14, 2012 10:02 pm

[111] Although come to think of it, Soriano is going to have to get four outs!

118 Mattpat11   ~  May 14, 2012 10:02 pm

[111] Well, with Nunez in the minors anyway.

119 The Hawk   ~  May 14, 2012 10:06 pm

If Robertson is to be the closer of the future, which he should be, or at least moreso than Soriano, I don't know how things like this really help him. It's that goddamn mega-binder of Girardi's, I'm sure of it. How about instilling some confidence in your guy? This would have been a perfect game to get him back out there - three run lead and all. But nooooooo

120 Ara Just Fair   ~  May 14, 2012 10:38 pm

Kennedy and Kershaw in a pitcher's duel which includes both of them throwing at each other. Lots of bad blood between the D-bags and the Dodgers.

121 RIYank   ~  May 15, 2012 7:39 am

Looks like Ivan will miss a start.
Also, here's why Soriano was the closer:

It’s just in my left side. I finished the game the other day, came in and it was a little sore. I didn’t really notice it, but the next day I came in and it was sore again. I said something about it. I got some ice after the game for it the first time, then the next day just tried to keep an eye on it. I was hoping it was one of those things that would go away real quick, but it just keeps hanging around. They’re trying to give me a few days.

(That's D-Rob, of course.)
