The Greek God of Walks is really a Jew, and according to Ken Rosenthal he’s also about to become a Yankee.
Ah, memories of Paul O’Neill, our favorite red ass.
I don’t have anything against Youkilis as a former Red Sox who was easy to root against but I worried if he’s got any game left in him. Twelve million bucks seems like an awful lot for a a guy who was lousy in Boston and Chicago last season.
Got a friend, big Red Sox fan, whose dog is named Youk. I imagine this isn’t easy for him.
i'm so annoyed by this. i just never liked the guy.
1) LOL. I don't imagine you'll be alone in that sentiment. Hey, if the guy can play--third, first, DH--if he can be a tough out, I'm down with him being 'round.
At least it's only a one year deal. And if he wants to play in 2014, he'll be motivated to show he can still play this year.
Alex -whenever somebody recals that Youk is a Member of the Tribe, I have to take another peak at Dennis Leary's famous rant:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D7mUcKnmReI
Happy Hanukah!
Yuck
I'm cool with it
As long as he plays well, that is
Good lord.
I reserve comment until I see that he is productive enough to overlook his antics. But I also reserve the right to jump all over him and the front office if he doesn't produce, because $12mil is a lot of money to spend on nothing.
Jesus fucking Christ, is NOTHING sacred?
Fucking hell.
like I've said before: I've irrationally and rationally loathed many a Red Sock but Youk never bothered me. I've always admired his toughness. Here's welcoming him to NY, and hoping he plays well for the Yankees.
I'm really supposed to root for fugly?
Fuck this, I'm so pissed.
I veto this bullshit.
[10] You want to fight?
Ugh.
Just ugh ... ly.
Well, at least they didn't sign Papelbon or Lackey ...
[8] I second that.
[12] C'mon Weeping, you can do it. I actually cheered for that titanic A-Hole Clemens when he came to town. Youk in pinstripes will be fine. Look forward to him and Joba doing some YES promos. :)
12) I know, I know. I respect that people hate, or hated Youk. He just never bothered me.
[13] Yes, I'd draw the limit at those two for sure.
Cult, Happy McCoy Tyner's Birthday! I'm tweeting out YouTube clips all day to honor the great man.
It's odd to pull for someone we routinely rooted against and yet it keeps happening. Baseball today. His "gamer" reputation coupled with the media creaming over him sickened me.
Now, I can hope for the best. He's tough, I'll give him that and I wish him success as he sticks it to the Sox ownership who jettisoned him so unceremoniously. I hope their loss is our gain. Perhaps he'll rebound from 2012.
And yes, Papelbon and Lackey, especially Papelbon would not be at the other end of my generous spirit. They make me want to hurl.
So, was Ron Blomberg the last tribal member on the Yanks?
I hate Youklis with the white hot passion of a thousand suns. This sucks.
I rather enjoyed the last guy who came to the Yanks as a free agent, with facial hair and having once played third for the Red Sox. I was for Boggs, no matter how much friends and family - my parents among them - hated him. My mother gets angry all over again, almost 20 years later now, every time she remembers Boggs played for the Yanks.
I'll take Youk, too. I think he has plenty left in the tank. He can also cover 1B if needed, and slots in perfectly at DH after A-Rod returns. And its just a one year deal? No complaints here.
Besides, it will be a lot of fun! Its already driving a large majority of Red Sox Nation bonkers - that's the icing on the cake. I've already made the first of many "Tom Brady is so psyched!" jokes. (Youk is married to Brady's sister, ICYDK, and of course Brady got a lot of shit in RSN for that photo of him in a Yankees cap with Giselle a few years ago.)
[15] Ditto. Laundry, baby!
Nothing was worse than Roger Clemens, New York Yankee.
I'm kind of shocked with myself, but I've already come around. I'm excited about this (how Irish did I make this coffee?)
[19] Laundry, exactly.
Yeah [17], maybe Blomberg -- it's been a long time, for sure. And the Red Sox have been cornering the market: Breslow, Danny Valencia, Kalish, Lavarnway.
'Course, he might suck. To me that's the only down side. It doesn't matter to me that he makes the team 4.3 uglier. (What units do you measure ugliness in? I know beauty is measured in millihelens -- that's the quantity of beauty needed to launch one ship...)
[22] Wait till you see his picture without the goatee...Yikes!
I'm still waiting to see thelarmis' reaction..it's going to be a good one. :)
It's all ARod's fault.
These comments are awesome, thanks guys. Yeah, 21) just how Irish IS your coffee? LOL
I guess if we can learn to live with Boggs, Damon and Clemens then we can get used to Youk...
When I heard the news, I said "Oh crap" and my wife said, "What's the matter?".
I answered, "Guess who's coming to the Yankees?"
She said, "Who?"
All I did was stand up and get into Youk's funky batting stance (which I knew she despised)
She said, "Oh crap is right, I can't stand to watch that guy..."
It's got to be pretty bad for my wife to dislike a player that much, she usually gives the benefit of the doubt to pretty much every player. And she even still pulls for former Yankees (Jose Molina is still one of her favorites) when they go to other teams. It's going to be interesting to see if she warms up to Youk.
The guy puts together very strong at bats. Seems like kind of a whiner, but that's okay with me to start. I hated Paulie O's tantrums until I realized how tough the guy was. He gets the benefit of the doubt with me. To start.
[26] Hahahahah!
See?
Fugly of face, fugly of demeanor, fugly of stance.
Say NO to fugly!
weeping, I promise you this much:
as much as I support the acquisition of Youkilis I will NEVAH, EVAH
"Yooook!" it up. I will yell nothing of the sort. That shit's for Sox fans.
[28] weeping, look at it this way: if Youk ends up totally stinking up the joint then the NY fans will boo him unmercifally clear out of the Stadium and the Yankees will cut him loose...
But, if he does have something left in the tank and he plays well enough to help the Yankees win then we will all just grit our teeth and take it. And I have a feeling that this is actually more likely than the first scenario, since it would be just like Mr. Fugly to "stick it" to people like me and you by forcing us to have to cheer for him as he is actually helping the Yanks.
See, it is a win-win situation... ;-)
Holy crap, the first game of the season at Fenway should be grrreeeaaaaaat!!!
well, one good thing is that he'll have to shave the stupid facial hair. that'll make him 37% less annoying.
[29] hahah
I'll hold you to that, my friend.
"we will all just grit our teeth and take it. "
Indeed.
This was my response to (more or less) every Clemens start until that one...was it 2003? The Pedro-Zim game?
After all that fucking chaos, Clemens won the baseball game. That was a heroic performance.
That was the first time I felt he was on my team.
[32] Good point.
Thank Youk fuh-lettin-mi- be-mice-elf. I wonder why all the 1 year deals? Why not a few 2 year deals. They are gong to go through all of this next year too? I think letting Russel Martin go was a mistake. in 2014 are they going to sign Cano for 250 mil and field a bunch of AAA guys?
Youk sticking it to the Sox will make this all worth it. What is the over/under for how many pitches he sees in the opener before takin' one off the noggin?
That is a good point about the facial hair...that certainly helped me with Johnny Damon. The short-haired, clean-shaven Damon was a totally different guy in my mind than the long-haired, bearded caveman Damon that played for the Sox. Here's hoping that works with Youk as well...
It's a negative helen...
[38] Since Youk's ugliness (face/stance/general demeanor) would more than sink thousands of ships, I'm thinking a different "helen" measurement is actually needed...
How about the Keller-Helen? Since watching 162 games of that fugly dude is going to make weeping go blind... ;-)
36) The 1-year deals is because the Yankees reportedly big goal is to get the payroll under $189 million in 2014 (I believe that goes into effect next off season but the total counts at the END of the 2014 season). If they get under the cap, the amount they have to pay will zero out instead of accumulate which it has done each year. So they are paying bigger dollars for one year deals. Swisher, gone. After next season, Granderson will likely be gone. The only guy I can see them signing long term under all of this is Cano but he might even be too costly for them.
40) I know about the 189 mil, but I feel like not only are they paying more on 1 year deals this year, but will again next year too or field an even worse team.
Maybethey they will see how Banuelos, Rommine and Pineda are progressing next year at this time and on the cheap, fill whatever holes they end up with, after this year.
I hope they can hold onto Cano. I imagine that he has a lot better years ahead and they may have to pay for the declining as well as they have with ARod, but Cano is fun to watch. At times infuriating too, but the lapses are tolerable.
[32] Maybe 37% less annoying, but 137% uglier.
Look guys.... Damon won the 2004 WS for the Sox, but we ended up liking him well enough.
Clemens was a redneck who handled fried chicked before he pitched, and Boggs was a redneck who ate the fried chicken.
Youk is MOT for goodness sake.
And he's a professional baseball player (which mus have made his mother Meshugeneh).
It could be worse. It could be A.J. Pierzynski.
[42] No matter what they say, I'm not convinced he's out of the picture. I'm certain that they are still discussing him way offshore.
Seems like the Dodgers are daring MLB to say anything about them blowing by the impending tax threshold. I'm really looking forward to seeing who's right about this, the Yanks or the Dodgers. Of course, I'm not convinced the Steinbrenner family isn't preparing to sell the team between now and then, so that clouds the issue a bit for me.

[45] Eww... even he agrees...
